Ron_Mexico 4,219
I appreciate the time you put into that post essay, thank you Brvy can eat a dick, just because. He's still my guy. I'm riding with my liberal brethren Cane and stick with Scalia being a petulant bitch. Our government is broken and I have no issues with some things being decided on a national level like this. States rights be damned. They need to be saved from themselves. Slavery would still be legal if states always decided their own fates on all matters. Maybe that wasn't yours or scalia's point. If it wasn't, I apologize. Leave dem gays alone.
Tiltinagain 973
He is the most logical judge by miles and miles. I am on record for being in favor of gay marriage, but he is absolutely correct that these changes should be made in the legislative branch with our elected officials. And, voted on by the people... I probably haven't disagreed with you on anything more than I disagree with this. "Our government is broken..." But you have no problem with things being decided on a national level....by the government. "States rights be damned". Well, you are welcome to give up your rights if you wish but I damned sure am not willing to piss away mine. Lastly, and most absurd....maybe... Is comparing enslaving human beings and allowing two men/women to marry. Just wow.
Ron_Mexico 4,219
Talk to your boy Clarence Thomas and read his opinion. He did it, not me. I never even implied slavery and gay marriage were one in the same. It was a states rights comparison. States can't be trusted to decide on everything. My point was, if they did, the southern half of this country would still be segregated. Read the spirit of the post Tilty, not the letter of it. You understood the point. And don't act like the government isn't in your affairs everyday. People that harp on their personal rights and say "don't want no gubment telling me what I can and can't do" is just absurd. What rights have you given up because of this? Or any recent decision. I honestly can't think of one, maybe you can. I'll happily have an open mind if you have a right that was taken away due to a lack of states right. I'm claiming ignorance on that one Marriage equality should exist and now it does. I don't care how it got there. Now I have to drive for 7+ hours
Napa Lite 3,278
I was super happy about all the SCOTUS decisions this week. If gay married, fairly housed, insured people bring us down then so be it.

Abolishing slavery should have been handled on a national level, there should never have been a debate. However some (most?) issues should be governed on a state level and some/most of those issues should be put to a vote of the people. And, lol, I fully understand the government is involved in my life everyday. I'm not disputing that they are I am saying that they shouldn't be as involved as they are. Please give me an example of anytime in history where more government lead to a more prosperous life for its citizens? I'll be holding my breath. I like what happened, I just don't like the way it was done. My previous post and this one should be in no way interrupted as me being against gay marriage. I honestly don't give a damn. I'm not happy about it or sad about it because my life won't be any different tomorrow than it was yesterday as a result. I too just don't like the way it was done. The SCOTUS has become a political joke. Objectivity and interpretation of the law has given way to personal biases and political pressure. On both sides.
frautotenkinder 1,025
I drank watermelon beer tonight. I want more. I also had a mescal and citrus fizz, but did not have dinner. One of my female friends told me we'd have to go back and get "balls deep in the charcuterie." I haven't read anything, are we talking about beer? Or cars? Kicks?
The Ocho 970
Big fan of Hell or High Watermelon. It's like Coorslight with flavor. I can only drink couple thought, too fruity for more than that.
frautotenkinder 1,025
I want to buy this place, it's a historic site. Scram would love it except for the planned living aspect, and how many middle class black folks are around. I mean, I'd love to live there. I had a happy hour last week at a new place, and Anthony Kiedis walked by. (He sat in table section and I'm assuming ate expensive food, while your heroine sat at bar and drank a reasonable and delightful red blend.)

frautotenkinder 1,025
I don't have the vacation time or money for a vacation now this year thanks to my recent hospital stay. Maybe next year. Oh, wait, I want to go to Europe next year. Check me again in 2 years. We'll come to you. I think it's downright criminal to have a lawn like that during a drought like Cali is having. LA is a desert, it should be landscaped as such. The lawns are a sensitive point for the homeowners association. The trees are so beautiful, but the HOA is really really high. They've attempted to vote in a more drought tolerant plan, but parts of the co-op vote it down. I'm looking for comfortable chairs. I found one at Ikea called the "Idolf." Too close, right? I think it's downright criminal to have a lawn like that during a drought like Cali is having. LA is a desert, it should be landscaped as such. It's downright criminal how many municipalities are short sighted and letting all the grass die to "save" water, without and thought to the cost of replacing it when the drought is over. 80% of the usage of CA water is agricultural. It's not like stopping watering the park 2 days a week to keep the roots alive is going to solve our water issues.

I have issues with many of the crops grown in cali, but at least they have a practical use. Lawns are purely ornamental, and I don't like them in the Midwest, when native and/or veg gardens are alternatives. In deserts, I think the are absolutely awful. Desert landscaping can be beautiful. Scroom 436
The most annoying thing about social problems of scale (like water) is that whenever it comes time to fix things and tell people no, you can't have your tropical rainforest lawn in the middle of Palm Springs, all the small players insist that they're being picked on because they're really not the biggest problem THAT OTHER GUY is the real problem. Its a huge failing of democracy. All crisis matters must be handled by a chief executive who has full authority to order summary executions of anyone who does not comply. Spain has produced the words best modern dictators (at least genetically speaking) Scalia is the best jurist on the SCOTUS but the absolute worst human being and most detached ideologue, which makes him the best justice. That house in LA has capital-efficiency issues, since its 50% the cost of the cheapest SFD in Beverly Hills, 90210 yet there is no question it isn't anywhere near half as good. The right real estate/neighborhood equilibrium is you stop buying up when the returns start diminishing.

Spain has produced the words best modern dictators (at least genetically speaking) The Roman Republic actually handled this quite well, having the elected office of Dictator, which existed for times when the Gauls were on the Rampage, or Hannibal just slaughtered another double consular army. The office was supposed to be for 6 months, at which time the dictator would give the total power back to the state, once the crisis was resolved. It worked for 100's of years, until people figured out that they didn't really have to give back the dictatorial powers, if the army loved them. For the record, I don't think Ocho needs to be killed for wanting a lush green lawn. A nice shunning would do.
CobaltBlue 662
Entertainment center never got mentioned. We sold the house yesterday! We're staying with my in-laws until the new house closes on the 29th. Feel like unpacking in the new house is going to be way more fun than packing in the old house.

CobaltBlue 662
hey congrats colby. hope you got a good price and made some money. Thanks. My wife bought it about 5 years ago at $136k, and we sold it for $211k, so it worked out nicely. Gave us 20% to put down on our new place plus some left over.

It's in Baldwin Hills, the Black Beverly Hills. The surrounding area is just okay--not a lot to walk to and I understand the schools aren't good. In the community itself, the demographics are changing quickly. Lots of families with children moving in, and a strong gay male presence. I think about moving in because of the ready-made community aspect. I'd miss having places to walk to, and it's on the wrong side of the 405 for my current job. More beer news: I bought Monk's Cafe Sour Ale at Trader Joe's. I love me some sour.

However, my fiscal wraps up on Tuesday, I may have secured a $50K donation (my largest) and my boss may have lost one. I know, I know...but it's nice to see the guy eat some shit. Also, if we can put a Black Man in the White House and twinks/butches/femmes can stomp down the aisle, then surely I can get past myself and secure the money, get my head screwed on straight, and continue to post here. LACMA today, with Basement Jaxx tomorrow.
Tiltinagain 973
The water issues in CA are just another in the long list of failures of beuracracy. Especially in CA. As an example, the city we live in had a population of about 9,000 when my wife and in laws lived here in the 80's and 90''s and into the early 2000's. Around 2001, when the housing boom started picking up steam here the city council, in a rare display of foresight, spent 10's of millions of dollars in new found tax revenue on infrastructure, including water supply and delivery. ( the city now has a population of about 45,000) All of the city's water comes from wells drilled in various locations around town (there is a LOT of ground water here. Most/all rural residents have wells for drinking water), they built storage facilities for the water and a huge reclamation plant so that water is captured and used for irrigation of parks and other city owned areas. The result is that the city is entirely water independent. None of the water we have can be shipped elsewhere and the city does not receive water from any state agency, rivers, lakes etc... (This city is not unique in CA, riverside and/or San Barnardino in southern CA are also water independent) Despite this the state has required the city cut its water use by 28% over last year. Even though, through the afore mentioned recycling program, the city already uses 30% less water than other similar sized cities in the state and the additional water the state mandates we save cannot simply be transferred for use in areas that didn't plan for the future, such as many communities in central CA. The head of utilities in town has come out and said we have much more than enough water for normal usage, irrigation etc... However the state will impose huge fines on them if we don't meet the mandated restrictions.

As a Chicago resident who has watched gentrification play out in every possible form, this advice is 1000% correct. By the time the naive white college graduates start buying, its too late. The urban-pioneering gay phase is when you can still buy at ghetto prices.
