I Quit Online Tourneys

Recommended Posts

I like your post about not knowing everything about poker keeping the game fascinating.I referred to my bookshelf full of yet-to-be-read poker books as my unvisited whorehouse while emailing a friend this week. My experience is the opposite of many of those in this thread, I find live tourneys give me the biggest edge and sufficient patience, whereas online tournaments is my next favorite and profitable activity.I like rebuy tourneys just because they happen to have the biggest overlay for tournaments with fewer than 500 players at the sites I play at now... So a 200 man tourney never goes over 5 hours, and by that time you are on the final table... I haven't tried SNGs much (under 100 played, probably--ever) but I'm headed this week for a new site without rake for SNGs, some tournaments and cash games...I find sometimes I do really badly after a big tournament win, i.e. something impulsive and dysfunctional pushes me to think that I deserve to win... so I have to calm down and think more methodically, and a tourney FT cash per week or better is quite possible (four figures or better) and so long as I'm cashing more than randomly expected, I don't get upset about suckouts. I've been on a dry spell for $100 freezeouts with 500-900 entrants for about 3 weeks now, but it doesn't get me down much.I'm just starting to enjoy cash games, and if it weren't for 6 max tables Holdem would be a bore online.I haven't read the newest books and DVDs on short table play, just using common sense for now and it's working... Any of you find the expertholdem dvds useful? Mehta's book? The FullTilt tournament book?I have no time to read these books! I'd rather be playing!Just got back from a live casino playing 20 hours of 1/2 NL. Wow, I had forgotten how fun this was, it's been 8 months since I last played, but rake and dealer unpredictability is enough to keep me online.I don't quite understand why partysux's friends who play MTTs have their time eaten up.Another successful player I had bumped into after we both final tabled 3 times in a week long series of live tournaments said he only played 4 $220 SNGs at a time for 20-25 hours a week, broken into 4 or 5 sessions.Though he knows about variance etc., he said he'd been making money at a rate of $250K a year doing this, so when I said why don't you play 80 hours a week, make a million a year? He said, "do you know how stressful it is to play for 4-5 hours without making a mistake?" So do you guys find SNGs played with this schedule still profitable and fun? Anyone?I slept through 8:30pm's juiciest tournament today, losing an EV of only $40 but it bothers me greatly... still catching up on sleep from the casino trip. $10+0 EF ... house throws in $5K, 135 players qualify weekly on average.... lol at me being upset about it. (pardon my rambling)Yeah, nice post dog, nice doggy.Edit, off-topic:While I was stuffing my face with the fine crab legs (2 plates, 5-6 crabs) and pot roast buffet stateside, I was laughing to myself as to how good poker players have it. I think we should appreciate the fact that if we go about it properly, it's like being retired since a person is 21 years old. Going bust shouldn't bother you if you realize your retirement will take you on an interesting up and down journey lasting 50+ years. It was about 2-3 years ago that I realized that if I gave honest advice to anyone 18 years old who loved poker (or who didn't know how to play but would do well at it) that I'd tell them NOT to go to college! and this is coming from me, a guy who made damn sure that he'd finish college as soon as possible in the highest paying profession fresh out of college. If I were 18 today I'd just play poker, I may not be correct, but that's how I truly think. In my view, everybody who doesn't want to work for 'the man' or who feels that racism or class barriers turn them off traditional careers have poker as an elegant choice. Specifically, I believe every single person who feels slighted by the system gets the last laugh by choosing poker as a career. If I elaborated further, I think you guys would think I'm crazy... so I'll leave it at that.

I have NOT given up tourneys. That's all I do now. I just gave up grinding them. Meaning I'll never be "BelowAboving" it playing seemingly almost every tourney almost every day of the week shooting for TLB.
Hey Dog, that part of the post wasn't for you...it was for the origional poster....sorry for the confusion :club: Ladi

ty. honestly, Bob actually posted in another thread that if the phrase (I won't write it fully here) gmanshade s**w appears in a thread then it will instantly be closed, and then he followed up on that regardless of what is in the thread. if this isn't an arbitrary standard, i don't know what is.honestly, i've met people in my life that i didn't get along with but i've never experienced the really intense hatred bob has for me. i retract my previous statement since it is not true. i have no idea what daniel has to do with my presence on this site. in another thread someone posted the reported though unsubstantiated fact that daniel voted to have me banned when i started the poll on whether i should stay or go. i hope to stay at FCP and if there is any way to broker a truce with fcp info let me know what to do.

i'm kind of afraid to say since i'm skating on thin ice. what i will say is that i am respectful to everyone on the site, try and offer interesting/entertaining/insightful comments, am an avid poker player, and try to learn from stronger players than myself how to play the game. my favorite player is hellmuth--though i am def a daniel n fan--and i've been on a roller coaster ride here with regard to my reception.

Why would you WANT to stay at a place in which NO ONE likes you and EVERYONE berates you?

FYPWhich is why the vast majority of "pros" go broke at some point.
IMO this is definitely true. there are WPT and WSOP players who are obviously coasting on luck (danny nguyen and various obscure players) but there are people that are more or less household poker names (vinny vinh, shawn sheikhan, randy jensen, etc) who are probably not long term winners and go broke so often that it is hard to regard them as successful pros. I'm not saying this is true about PrtyPsux, I have no idea but I'm convinced that he has a lot of skill based on his posts and his performance. Nonetheless, poker is a game where skill is no more--and possibly LESS--important than emotional and psychological control, and luck is such a big factor, that there are very few people with the disposition to make it.

b/c at least i have a rep here. when i post a lot of people read what i say, and even if they disagree with me at least i have an audience. in response to mase, all i'm trying to do is bring fun, interesting ideas, laughter, and enjoyment to the site. ive gone too far at times when i'm too high on myself, but since in real life i'm able to get along with almost everyone i don't why i can't patch things up with FCP info and everyone on here

Can't speak for others but this is why I'm not a gman fan--the potential TOTY--with lots of great insight and discussion from some of the best FCP has--has suddenly become yet another referendum on his presence here. True, his first post was an innocuous one, but every post thereafter just screams "look at me!" as usual.(sigh)

He used to be quite trollish, but has toned it down considerably after getting a very strong backlash. Part of the problem now is that every thread he posts in somehow becomes about him, which is very distracting, so lets try and steer this back to the issue at hand. Great post Obey, I totally agree about loving the beginning/middle/end journey aspect of tournaments. It just seems to me to add another level of strategy on top of the basic game, and I love that part of it. That's why I play mostly tourneys.

I knew that Shawn Sheikhan had been involved in a vehicular manslaughter a few years ago (he hit a pedestrian with his Benz) but apparently he was also convicted--and served time for--rape of an underaged girl. i can't imagine the difference between Las Vegas, NV and Tehran, Iran. lmaoas usual gmanshade here bringing you up to date poker newsshipppppppppppppppppppppppppp***
It is when you post things like this that make you come across as a total ass. This is not respectful/interesting/insightful/entertaining. You know that "shipppppppppppppppppppppppppp" is meant to be annoying, so why are you shocked when you wind up annoying people?Quit trying to be clever and just make posts that are on topic and not make everything all about gman....and guys, you're right by becoming part of the hijack, I become part of the "problem"

Above are the OP's in two threads about the same subject. Notice how the one from bob doesnt have a reference about himself in it.
ty mercury. once again, important forum member = lifetime gmanshade fan.
1) a lot of people resented my popularity on here, and the way they reacted to me led me to decide to take a break. the majority of htese people were long-time posters that were angry i went from an anonymous newbie to very well known contributor almost overnight.
these are both in the same thread 10 ish posts apart.
which would u rather have between these options? : 1) people watch your every move, read and respond to every post you make, and some hate you a lot and some are big fans or 2) you get along with everyone, some people know who you are others don't. most people if asked would say "ehhhhhhhhh. yeah i guess he's an okay guy, never did anything to me.i'd rather have 1).gmanshade is a force of nature.don't they know how gman playssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss??p.s.--i'm not saying that the OP is category 2, he's not.
It's true what they say about jealousy... it can only make you unhappy. However, in many cases it can bring laughter to gmanshade.
This is the period where he refers to himself in third person.I havnt even gone into the vinny vinh threads which is where he really started trolling.Ill end with this
ok, let me start off with something postive. you have an awesome avatar.now, let me respond to your comment. the fact that you are so angry that I'm a fan of his is really sad, and again it seems as though people that don't get a lot of recognition, that don't have much success, that often feel overlooked or ignored are really pissed off when someone else gets it. maybe that's one reason i'm a fan of hellmuth--we are both winners and have been very successful. i guess i can say that if you don't like me or hellmuth stop reading/watching/thinking about us. i don't really know what else to say.shipppppppppp the jealousy

To help steer what used to be a great thread off of the side-drain, let me go back to Looshle's (I think Looshle...I'm not re-reading) question about tournament players potentially hitting the good side of variance early and then regressing to the mean of being a breakeven/slightly losing player. I would imagine that this would be harder in today's world with countless major online tourneys every single week than it was in the pre-internet days. Let me ask an ignorant question about the tournament scene pre-internet - was it possible to make a living off of tournaments, or did players have to play cash games and tournaments to pay the bills? Someone like a Doyle Brunson is both a phenomenal cash game player and a phenomenal tournament player. Did everyone have to do both, or were there people who could only play tournaments and make a living?
