Its just common curtesy. You don't really have to mean it but its just a nice thing to say and yes some people actually mean it. I'm a fan of "gl." I even say it in casinos and everyone looks at me weird.
You say the letters "gl" or you say "good luck"? Wouldn't saying "gl" out loud be like saying "lol" every time you found something funny?

I usually say it after I've been knocked out, if I like some of the people at the table. And I always mean it. What's with all these posts about how people don't like this or that common expression anyway. What is next? Are people going to start whining about phrases like "hi" and "good night"?

Obviously a big difference between saying it heads up and after you are knocked out. At that point I'll usually say it also.

What makes me "sick" is people who are too damn lazy or ignorant to spell 'because' and instead type 'cuz.' Let me re-phrase that for you."Wut mks me "sic" iz ppl who r 2 dm lzy r dum 2 spl 'Bcuz'' + nstd type 'cuz.'

If I get busted out of a tournament or when I'm leaving a cash game sometimes I say good luck to the other players. I don't mind people saying good luck when they flip the cards and see that they're in a coinflip kind of situation either. The only thing I hate is when people get all in with soemthing like Aces against Kings (or some other dominated hand) and the guy with the Aces says good luck. I don't know why, but I hate that.
