Interesting Question.

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.In my wondering in the net I like to read and see other forums and I stumble on a related topic, not exactly poker but still some thing (I must admit I have not wrote it it is some one ells somewhere ells)."--------------------------------------------------------------------------------My girlfriend doesn’t like me gambling. She says that it is something only disillusioned people do, and the whole point is to keep gambling until you lose. We argued about it for a while, and I finally convinced her to come with me to a casino for the first time in her life, in the hope that I could spark my interest in her. I set her off easy at the roulette with 50/50 odds on $20, and she just happened to WIN. She then looked at me with a "well now what" face, and I realized she just doesn’t get what’s fun about it. I then started thinking: even though I have a lot more fun at the casino than her, in the total balance of wins VS losses, it is very likely that she has a greater chance of keeping her profits (granted she knows the game, of course) than me, simply because she is not driven by the hopes of scoring large. I asked my friends and no one seemed to have a straightforward answer to my question "is someone who hates playing actually more likely to win that someone who loves playing?"-------------------------------------------------------------------------------what do you guys think?S.PS the rest of the discussion is posted here:http://www.onlinecasinoreviewer.com/online...t.html#post4330

It is known by casinos that some people will sell their cars to keep gambling, these people never win.The people that do not want to press their bets are allowed to win at least 18% more than people that do press their bets. This number is scientifically calculated using latest statistical methods and really cool laptops.

Dump her, quick. Unless you're prepared to give up any poker aspirations you have, for the rest of your life, run away. Now. If she doesn't "get" the rush that we all do from gambling, she never will. One day, your finances will be joined, and there's about a 0% chance of you being allowed to use "your" disposable income for gambling.(to whoever wrote the initial article, that'd be my advice)The rest of the premise of the article is crazy.

Someone who doesn't have the passion to win will not win. Its that simple.Of course, a degenerate won't win either. There's gotta be a balance. A smart gambler is a winning gambler.

I think the OP needs to look up what's wrong with the text in bold. Just because I dislike gambling won't make me a winner at -EV games. In the long run, the only difference is I'd lose less. I think of poker the same way I think about investing: it's all about manipulating risk. I also enjoy outwitting people and taking their money, but that's beside the point. Come to think of it, players who bring skill to a poker table full of people who treat it like gambling are basically hustling them and putting over a con.

My girlfriend liks playing blackjack a little too much. I often have to tell her to stop at the casino. She doesn't play poker though. I have been working on that for a while. Next step is to get her to play poker with me and the guys. Then the casino.

this might be a good time to say that i'm stuck $1800 over my last 4 sessions at chinese poker.someone who did not love the game as much would just lose less because they wouldn't play it as much. assuming we play at the same caliber, they would not be inherently more likely to win.

I would like to know how she got 50/50 odds on one of the worst table games in the casino (in terms of house edge) ?
0 and 00 are wild, didn't you hear the new rule?

I'm so surprised at how people fail to understand the basic maths behind games. In roulette, there are 38 numbers I believe. That means winning on any one number is 37-1. The casino however only pays out 35-1. There are 18 red number and 18 black numbers. However, there are also 0 and 00, which are green. This means the bet is not 50-50/even money/1-1.These small edges for the casino don't have a huge effect for the social gambler having a good time because it is almost 50/50. But over the course of the billions of bets made per yr in a casino, these small edges end up being hundreds of millions of dollars. There are always winners at roulette, but remember, over 1 billion spins, the house always wins, so if you make 1 billion spins, you always lose./rant

There are some smart folks here at the forum, but the general attitude toward women is ludicrously disfunctional. If you want to have a happy marriage someday, your best bet is to do the exact opposite of whatever anyone on here tells you.</resume lurk>

To the OP, if your idea that she will win more (lose less) because she hates gambling, then you are stuck in a serious catch-22 my friend. Personally, I don't think it matters one way or another, you're 50/50 on black/red anyways.

Why don't you delurk more often to offer counter-examples and a different perspective? You're anonymous, so you don't have anything to lose. The more the merrier, whatever. Don't insult the whole board at once...it's a lot more fun when you play the Devil's Advocate and get specific. :club:

Someone who dislikes poker but plays will either:A) lose less frequently because they may play less frequentlyB) lose more in the long run because they will not like the game enough to put the required work in to improveI'd also like to say that Jam-Fly wins the roulette discussion, which really didn't ever need to begin anyway. But he ended it :club:

This is an easy one. There are two possible outcomes. 1/2 = 50% = 50/50. You see how the math works there? Either you win or you lose. 50-50. It shouldn't be necessary, but I know it is: sw.
