why i am giving up poker

Recommended Posts

your friend needs help, and needs a program to stop him from gambling. just cause your friend has no discipline doesn't mean you need to stop playing because of it. if my friend goes and get his ass pissed drunk, acts like an idiot and gets beaten by a group of people, am I gonna stop drinking? People get into car accidents all day and die, should I stop driving?

I know you read the Simmons piece on the Karate Kid series. That was good. I really like the take on III where the rich guy flies in Mike Barnes to take Daniel down to revence John Crease. This rich guy doesn't have anything better to do?Great stuff. The movies and the article.
Never got into III. To paraphrase Simmons: that movie never happened.
Part IV never happened. Hillary Swank, first Karate, then Steve Sanders girlfriend, then a boy, now boxoing.Oh the range.

They really should have just stopped at II. I mean, how are you gonna top that final fight scene with all the people spinning the hand-held drum thingy? They should've bowed out while on top......In Okinawa fight for life, not for points...

While I understand where you are coming from and I applaud you for your new found conscience your thinking is somewhat flawed and the only one who will lose if in fact you are a good poker player is you. Here is why, Poker is no different then business, or life in general. The days of the gold watch and retirement and loyalty either by a company or an employee are long gone.Take for example Hewlett/Packard, when the founders of the company were alive, one of the things the company prided itself in was the fact that they NEVER laid anyone off.Do you think that is still the case today? NO! They have laid off many, many people. Life is rough, tough and ruthless.I have been in the games industry for 20 years and have had to move my family far too many times to count because, I have worked for smaller companies that downsized and I had to find another job.My current employer is fantastic, and the company is doing very well, but guess what? We just laid off 30+ people a few weeks ago. Now did we let these people go because they were bad people and or doing a bad job?No we let them go as a cost cutting measure. The point I am making in all of this rambling is that you need to take care of yourself and your family. If poker is one way of doing so and you can make money, do it!!You are NOT responsible for your friends and their actions. If you feel bad for your friend, then here is a happy compromise, don't play against him.Just use your skills to play against the other fish who are strangers. Poker has been around forever, and won't go away. Someone is going to win the money, it may as well be you.I for one will continue to play!!!

Now; I have come to realize that THIS is the type of person who makes me money. THIS is the type of person whom I love seeing at my table. What we call a "fish" is actually a good-hearted, reasonable person with a problem. A fish is an addict; a fish is a loser; a fish is a man or woman who is going to end up broke. And I am profiting from their miserableness. This is the primary reason I play at all. The money is just gravy.
You're like a comic book villian who needs the misery and pain of others for sustenance. Smash the "emotion vampire". It suits you.

If you were the CEO or owner of a business, would you not try to crush the competition because they were nice people, who employed nice people? There's a reason Bill Gates has 34252452435425432653654 dollars. If you can't stop yourself form going broke, don't play, I don't feel sorry for anyone.

If you don't have the stones to crush anyone in your way, then you better buy a new skirt and blouse and get ready to swallow...like reallyThis reminds me of playing at a home game recently where 2 pals would not bet into eachother...what a waste...I'd checkraise my sister and try to bust her like I would anyone who was trying to take MY MONEY...That is the whole idea, if you are not trying your best totake their money, they will take yours...stick to checkers

I finally decided; I cannot feel good about making a living (or even a pleasant side profit) from this sort of person. Although it is not ethically wrong (everyone knows the risks' date=' etc.)' date=' I have come to believe that the world would be better off if the strong would not prey on the weak in this particular arena. More often than not, the weak need some mercy.Poker is a great game, but it can be destructive. And I, for one, will no longer be a part of it.[/quote'']I have no problem taking the fish's money none what so ever.Mercy is for the weak we do not train to be merciful here.[/quote]Cobra Kai?

an old proverb says: a fool and his money are soon departed. OP, your friend is the fool. I don't feel bad for someone like this at all, and I don't care about their problem. I have plenty of my own problems to worry about the idiot that is trying to hit his two outer against me. while this is a cautionary tale, do you think that those who need to hear it will take up the advice, no they won't, and that's why I make money and they bitch and moan about the suckouts that happen to them

How long do you think it will take until the news media starts demonizing poker? I can see some story on the nightly news about the downfalls of online poker, creating some controversy where a kid spent all of his parents money effing it away online. The poker boom has been amazing, I know I've had fun, but how long will it last? Will it die down naturally, or will something bad happen to make people shy away?

Really nice post...Professionals SHOULD ads that have the word 'Caution' somewhere in it towards young youths..GOod post, very well done..for your friend, If he was a smart player, he would know how to manage his bankroll, remember, poker is WORK, it's not one of those table games at the casinos, poker is work, u grind it out..you have a couple bad rounds in a session, you go relax and re-think all the things you did wrong, how to correct 'em, and learn from your mistakes. But, I do have friends like that, who just can't stop 'trying' to win money and you can't stop that even if you were his best friend and i hope everything works well with him and yourself in the future.Jay

fair enough. On another note, the CEO from Harrahs doing that gambling PSA commercial gets me everytime. His voice and hair kill me. I keep waiting for either the bunny to come across the screen still going, or a Geico add. It just doesn't seem real. Its about a 51 on the UCR scale.
