What Did Poker Bring To You ?

Recommended Posts

Hi there !I'm thinking this question must have been asked a few times, but it's 3AM, and I'm just too tired to hit the search button; so I'll just go ahead and ask, point me to a link and mod me down if I should've searched...This is a question that's been sitting in the back of my head for quite some time now. Let me put it in perspective first...I've been playing Hold'em for quite some time now (considering I'm only 21), both limit and no-limit games, varying between real life poker rooms, internet websites, and home games, and a couple of months ago, a friend of mine threw out a line that hit me quite hard... We were in class, and being the kids we are, he took something of my belonging, couldn't remember what it was, I didn't know it was him, so I started looking at everyone, and trying to figure out what they hid... Did they know something ? Were they lying ? The usual stuff, really... It wasn't important, just, like I said, kids play, but I somehow tried to figure something out. Long story short, I confronted him, told him to give my stuff back, and the way he answered completely gave away his game. I explained how what he replied wasn't consistent with what he was answering, the fact that he usually would just tell me to shake it and ignore me, whereas now, he was trying to convince me it wasn't it, etc etc... The bottom line is, when he knew I caught him, he told me, "Wow man, you really should stop playing poker, you're braining way too much for small stuff"...So, if you managed to keep up with me 'till now, you'll be rewarded by the real question that lays underneath this topic:Is there anything, an ability, a reflex, a way of handling things, that poker brought you in other aspects of your life ? Not necessarily only by reading people or something alike, but really, anything... I'd love to hear thoughts about this...Hope this stuff isn't all to boring,Greetings,

heart ache and fat bitchesoh and scum under my finger nails from riffling chips
Man, I hate that!! Last weekend the guy next to me held up one chip by the edges and three other chips were stuck to the bottom of it so well that they didn't fall off.Somebody should invent a chip washing machine for crying out loud.

I always keep a mini pocket knife with me and I am CONSTANTLY grooming the nails while playing. Also obsessed with washing my hands when playing in the casino.

Your bluffing, I'm all in. There's no way a casino would allow you to have a knife inside, and then bring it out and use it.

You guys should be ashamed of yourselves. The OP asked a legitimate question and you treat it like a joke.I was recently on a 3 hour flight and was seated next to a man who kept talking about stupid shit. Using my poker skills I asked the flight attendant for a seat change and was able to change seats to a better aisle. Thank you poker - you saved my ass.

Good question for one thing. Live poker has really improved my people skills and I feel like I take it a lot easier in life as a whole. A downside now is that I think 70% is good, which in turn hurts my grades on tests lol. Online poker has made me a little bit more aggressive which in turn helps me fundamentaly live. I think that if you consume yourself with one thing for a long time it will in turn have it's effect on your life. Plus I met my girlfriend at a school poker tourney which was sick, we've been together for almost 2 years now...surprisingly for the amount of beats we have put on each other heads up. :club:

it sort of worked out the blank spots in my life game plan. i always envisioned success after university. the plan is to grab some lucrative high paying job, but no clue how it'll happen. and as you approach graduation, unless you're in accounting/engineering and had a coop position the whole way through at a very reputable school, you can pretty much throw your dream of having a 6 figure income out the window for the immediate future. law school is always the "plan b", except if you're like most people, you dont actually have any interest in the field. you just dont know what else to do. you lower your expectations, and realize that you're lucky if you can get someone to pay you 40k out of school with some stupid economics degree (or whatever your field is, except accounting and engineering). then it sinks in - that you're just an average nobody destined for a life of working in some god awful office, and letting stupid details from your career distract you from the fact that you hate your life.poker helped me skip the last few parts, and has allowed me to be optimistic about life.ive stopped thinking inside the box as far as jobs go. i dont even feel as though i'd need poker any more. i have a million ideas for how to make money, some of which have already been executed successfully and others that are in the process. there are TONS of ways to make money in the world if you're clever and have the time/resources. thankfully, poker has given me both of those.oh yeah. and the money. ... it's given lots of that.

Exactly what aspect in poker taught you to do this? Is this the kind of thing we should be getting out of the game because if I've been spending all my poker time making/losing/losing more money I'm going to be pissed.

Swiss Army mini knife FTW!It also has a tooth pick ...... and little tweezers for those pesky untimely nose hair moments.
