I started out in 2003, I watched Gus win at the bellagio the 1st telecast of WPT, then the WSOP was on nonstop. My dad had always been playing poker but I hated it. Then while at the Uofwashington I met up with a bunch of guys who played 10, 5 dollar nl tournys in their house. Then while doin that I deposited money on UB, and played in the free poker league. Then trips to the casino for tournaments, then i got into limit hold'em. Made it all the way to 200/400 on pokerstars, won a few live tournys, donk it off back online go through 20k dollar swings. Thats my poker storyMay 26th ill be playing in a WSOP satellite, that pays out to three places. I'm probably gonna cash out and just play some prelim event, ill even propose a three way chop or something.1st place is 10k in wsop chips or something, plus 5 in cash2nd is I think 3k in wsop chips and 1500 in cash3rd is like 1500 in wsop chips, and 500 cash

well this is the most pointless thread. i don't even get it.. u trying to ask how people started out. and it makes it so stupid that you start off with a huge lie in the first post. has it not been proven you made up hand histories...? and have no way of saying how u ended up at '200/400' and nobody saw you there... i woudl be posting that trip to success.20k swings in 200 400 is pretty luckily really... whats that 50BB... big swings. hate to sound like a jerk but its all lies is it not?anybody that has played 200 400 surly woulda play at least a 100$ tourney and not the 5$ - 20$ your stats show.....why even bother.

Family always played cards (I think all families from the midwest do). Learned to play poker at a very, very young age.Played in a lot of home games in my teens. Played lots and lots of Stud. Usually won. Had a particular fondness for old people who thought they would be better poker players because they were "older" and they played a lot of poker back in (insert war here). They always sucked. Took their money on a regular basis. They always told you exactly what they had based on their bets. Learned how to fold top pair when I knew it was beat by the time I was 16. Started to develop an ability to put people on ranges of hands.Never took the game seriously till my mid 20's. Bought all "the books", read them, applied what they said. Learned about pot odds, advanced game strategy, the nuance of position, etc. Realized that the game I had been playing really sucked, but I had a reasonable natural talent for it, so I worked hard on taking my game to the next level.Over time, gained a higher degree of situational comprehension for the game. Fell into my natural style.Ran my roll up pretty high but without BR management skills, donked most of it off due to downward variance and a few bad beats. Learned BR management skills. Ran my roll back up. Realized that I will be working on improving my game for the rest of my life, no matter what levels I reach. Haven't ever played 200/400.Here I am.

started @ 2/4 and 3/6 limit when i was 18 in indian casinos in 2001. i was at the casino when i read about the WPT first starting in cardplayer. at the time, i would be surprised if there was 2 NLHE cash games in all the so-cal casinos. when the casinos first started spreading NLHE it was STTs. i sucked then and still do. then it was at cards now it's asain dealers.

I was home for the Christmas holidays in PEI watching Rogers Sportsnet, I believe, with my brother and my dad and they were interviewing DN.I'd been playing cards, board games, computer games since I was like eight years old, but never really thought of poker as a real strategy game. DN convinced me otherwise. Also, being a journalist, I liked the people aspect of the game.I had the vague sense that you could play online, but didn't realize back then that they gave money away for free (freerolls).Since I was a poor working stiff, I didn't have ANY money to put into poker, so I played the play money games on Paradise Poker, Jetset poker and Absolute poker. In my first freeroll on Paradise Poker, after waiting an hour to play, I lost on the first hand when my trip 10s lost to a higher set and a full house.I got $2 from an Absolute freeroll, ran it up to about $18, and then donked it off.Soon after, my brother ran his freeroll money on Jetset up to about $250. I was a little jealous of his success. Finally, I got a $1 out of another Absolute freeroll.I had just finished reading Harrington's first two books. Although I probably should have built up a bigger roll I decided to play a .60 sng and see what happened. I played super tight, no ego poker and built up the roll up to $18 - a safe amount of money for $0.60 sngs and have continued to build it up to a very comfortable level to play $1.00 sngs.I read somewhere that Chris Furguson plans to turn $0 into $10,000. Although it will probably take me 4 more years to do so, it would be fun to try.

why? Because there's always the f*cking n00bs that take this dude serious and post their story which is cool, but not in a thread made by a pathological liar. What a douchebag.

I have had this really dull and annoying pain in my groin area going on five years now. The pain moves around too. Sometimes I feel it in my hip or in my lower back. I have had x-rays, sonograms, ct scans, and other procedures. The doctors have not been able to find anything. They just keep sending me through the specialist merry-go-round while they milk me and my insurance company.I finally got approved to have an MRI, which I had last week. Now I am carrying around pictures of my things, awaiting to revisit the orthopedist....
I hear that is the second most common way of getting a start in poker after being taught by your parents :club:

As a small boy, I had no friends. So I would sit in our dirty basement all alone, occasionally pleading with my parents to, "Buy me a monkey!" Of course, they always said, "No."One day, though, a weird little man drove into our neighborhood in a weird little truck, with eerie music coming out of it. His sign said, "Monkeys for sale--Two for 50 cents." Again, I pleaded with my parents, "Buy me a monkey." I knew what they were going to say. "No." I could just tell it by the looks on their faces (me: demonstrating early "reading" skills, perhaps). But then my mom said, "What the hey. They ARE two for 50 cents." So my dad agreed. However, they only bought me one, damn cheapskates. So I still had no friends, but now I could share the basement with a monkey. One, who as it turned out, just happened to be one kickass monkey poker player! I mean, this effing monkey was so effing brilliant! You know, the kind of monkey poker player that would shove with the nuts to make me think he was trying a bluff and thus induce me to call with BPTK. That sort of advanced play. I mean, thinking back to our heated HUs, I really effing hated that monkey poker player SO MUCH, because he pwned me.And yet, I loved him.To give maximum respect, I honestly have to say that I believe he was the best effing monkey poker player that the world would EVER see. That is, if I, on that first day, hadn't eaten him whole.Wait, did I say that weird little man in that weird little truck was selling MONKEYS two for 50 cents? I didn't mean monkeys. I meant, "Frozen Chocobombs." Man, I loved those things. Even though I only got to eat one in my entire life. Alone in a dirty basement.Anyway, that's how I got my start in poker.
