The Grind Of Sng's

Recommended Posts

Three months ago I came to the realization that the best way for me getting a little extra cash is to play the SnG's.. As of right now, I've worked my way up to the 10+1 games on AP and have been crushing them. My parents have even told me I can avoid getting a job this summer if I can keep up what I'm doing. However, as of recently, I've just been incredibly bored with them, and I haven't been as consistent with them as of late. For instance, right now I'm playing, and I just can't get into the games. I make stupid calls that I normally do not do, I make too many stupid plays. So I decided to switch to limit cash games, and although I find them much more fun, I don't make money in them. Last night I had about 450 on AP and played a 6 man .5/1 and lost about 30 bucks. I'll be honest too, it's not because I'm getting unlucky, I just make donkey calls. Mind you, this isn't much for some but for a 17 year old senior it's a pretty big hit. Now playing and losing money in these cash games also affects the way I play on the SnG's, and I went from up about 250 last week to only up about 180... Keep in my mind, in a regular school week no one in my class makes that much, so I consider myself fortunate. During the summer, I calculated that I can make about 1k a month, because of the SnG's. I'm also bored silly with large MTT.. After winning 2 in 1 week and raking in about 1k, I can't even get out of the first 3 levels..My question to you all is what do I do? I'm bored out of my mind with SnG's and love cash games, but I make money in the SnG's and get my *** kicked in the cash games.. Do I take a break from poker? Do I keep grinding it away at the cash games and hope to get better at them? Or do I suck it up and keep playing the SnG's...I'm really at a cross-roads here, I've thought about it giving it up, but this is my only source of income at the moment.

The nice part about playing microlimits limit games is that you can watch porn at the same time and still be playing better than most players....Ray

that one was no good. in addition to skalansky, this book by Yao was great, Weighing the Odds in Hold'em Poker. has a very fast on the fly method to see if you should make a call or not in limit.

Is that a legitimate question?
i believe, and i could be wrong here, he is making a joke that someone could consider buying a hellmuth book when refering to cash games.hellmuth isn't exactly the first pro you want to go to for cash game advice.

it is ok for an absolute beginner, but the new NL 2+2 book is good as you get more advanced.

Well, I mean, you never get tired of playing sometimes?I chose to stay at home this spring break instead of going to galveston with my friends, just to play poker.. I played about 5-6 hours a day, and I swear to God, I could feel my *** getting bigger..

Worked your way up? From the $5 sng's? wow, congrats. lol. Theres virtually no difference btwn $5 and $10's.Also - you do realize that .5/1 limit ring games and $10 sng's are essentially COMLPETLY different types of poker right?

at our age you have to make sure you also devote at least 1 hour a day to active movement...lifting weights, swimming, etc...this will help keep your head clear and focused to make money. i find that days i dont work out is days i lose.

I agree, going to the gym and working out is a good way to relieve stress and reflect on poker.

Would that include laying on your back while your girl does her thing?@OPI take it you've never had a real job? At your age you have a choice between a grocery store bottle room or poker... Take a break and Refocus. Read that Sklansky book, get good, then ride what's left of this poker boom right through college. By that time you should have a couple million in the bank to work with. Get a nice car , pound some hot vag, then use what you've learned from college to start a few businesses so you can break into the upper levels of society.

Hey a$$ hole, I'm 17, it's not like I have thousands of dollars to spend on higher SnG's, difference between them:First is in the 5 dollar game is 25 dollars,First in the the 10 dollar games is 50 dollars....May not seem like a big difference to you because you are mister big time poker player, but it is to me...

Closest thing I've ever had to a real job is I work at a radio station and announce the basketball and baseball games for our highschool, I get about 50 bucks a week for it, not much but I'll take any income..
