bill banning online poker

Recommended Posts

A republican from Virginia is re-introducing a bill that would make it illegal to play poker or gamble online. This bill was introduced a year ago and was expected to pass, but the work of one congressman defeated the bill. The sad part is, that congressman is in prison for racketering. There will be nobody to challenge the bill and it is expected to pass. As a result of this bill, the price of stock for PartyGaming and 888 have dropped dramatically. What does the passage of this bill mean to online gamers? Any transaction after the date of the passage of the bill will be voided and deemed illegal (credit cards will be denied, bank accounts will be frozen); this includes using neteller and firepay. Additionally, any individual who plays online after the bill is passed will have their accounts frozen and money seized; apparantly every account with a US address will be blocked and traced by their IP address. I spoke to one of my old law professors today about this and he stated that as long as the government does not recieve taxes from the gaming sites, they will do everything in their power to shut down access in the United States. This is for real. As someone who recently discovered online poker, it truly makes me sad. I will be following this closely and will report any updates.

thank god we can now rescue america's youth from the venemous poison that is poker, so they can go back to more productive activities like drugs.
wrong.look at the big picture.i think republicans would just as easily seek to control online gaming, which is typically a foreign venture, because of its effect on their domestic donors, i.e. indian tribes and gaming companies. they're costing us money; let's get that legislator in our pocket to shut them down!they can couch it in moral or federal fiscal terms all they want, but it's probably just the almighty dollar that's driving this.

but how can they do this? isnt the internet a free place were no1 can tell you this is illegal or wrong a place of free speech? i was always taught this
More or less. It's near impossible to regulate. If they're going to beat up on people for using Neteller and Firepay, they're gonna have Ebay, Amazon and so on, up their ass so quick they'll be coughing up Luis Gonzales' bubble gum for years.

The infrastructure is not in place for such an attempt and the negative ramifications would be massive, so it's not going to happen. All I have to say about this thread.

I play mainly on ladbrokes and as you may, or may not know they dont allow U.S players on site. I was curious about this and asked why. They said it was due to legal reasons. There is a grey area regarding the legality of poker on-line in the U.S. Obviously they realised the potential legal harm of law-suits to their business. The only suggestion i can make is become a citizen of the U.K and play poker legally. Plus all our poker winnings are tax free!!. You know it makes sense.

Is that true? Not that I ever win anything anyway, but as a Brit, that's good news if I ever manage to luckbox my way to some winnings...

So, is the government going to also go to each house in America and remove people's hardware routers so they can get the IP address. And are they going to get access to databases of major online sites? (that's a lot of trips to Gibraltar). Oh, and the way the US has decimated the internet porn world (s.w.) I have the utmost confidence that the online Poker world has nothing to worry about!!!

Land of the Free
Haha it's incredible isn't it? The US is probably the most non-free western nation in the world, you guys are so restricted it's unbelievable. However I'm pretty sure this is unenforceable. So no need to worry just yet.One thing I'm confused about is in a number of states live poker is legal, but internet poker is a grey area? How's that work?Oh and yes poker is considered gambling in the UK so it's not taxable.

Honestly people, this isn't that hard. http://www.just****inggoogleit.com/search....ess+bill+searchGo to the Library of Congress's Webpage, and search the text of all bills for the phrase "internet gambling." There is one bill in Congress that even has that phrase. That one can be found here:http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?c109...p/~c1098L3Zrv::Ta-da!And, for those of you too lazy to read the text, I will quote the key passage that explains precisely why this bill exists and why it will pass:"Internet gambling is a growing cause of debt collection problems for insured depository institutions and the consumer credit industry."That's right folks, the same people who ask you what is in your wallet, and who brought you the new bankruptcy bill are the one who want to control your internet gambling. Guess what? They have more money than you. You lose. Have a nice day.Good luck.

No they will not do all that, but it will be illegal, if you get caught, you will be in some trouble. It is the same exact thing as programming your own Directv cards, yes it is illegal, but alot of people still do it. They can not control the internet as much as they would like with all theese overseas hosts. But if this does pass, the online gambling community will drop drastically. The only people who will still play online will be those people who are willing to take that risk. The individual site hosts will also be required to perform some checks before allowing just anyone to gamble on their site. So it will make it alot more difficult to just jump online and play anytime you want, you will have to jump through some hoops and take some risks.I hope this does not go into effect. I believe it IS all about the mighty dollar, and the government wants a piece. If they can't get their dirty little hands in it, they will do everything possible to shut it down, and republicans are the worst. I can say, thet I would not be too dissapointed though, I love playing live and don't really like playing online as much. If this did go into effect, there would be alot more live games around, whcih I would love.
