goading people into showing hands

Recommended Posts

A lot of times, when a bet goes uncalled, amatuers will pause to think about whether to show their hand or not. You can tell that they are conflicted about whether to show it or not. It is really easy to know when this is happening because they are physically in between showing a hand or not. I always look out for this and when I spot it, I say something like "oh, come on man, you have to show this one. its in the rules" or some other thing liek this, and every single time they will show it. I have seem so many freaking hands like this, people always ablige. Does anyone else do this? I highly recommend it. It has gotten me a lot of info over the years.

There are tactics you can use online as well. Saying things like "Nice catch donk" or "Lucky river fish" will often times get your opponent to show you his cards to prove he didnt suck out. It doesn't always work, but can be useful.

What exactly is the protocal on that? Who has to show? The bettor or the caller?
Think about it for a minute. If someone gets "called", they have to show.Under the heat of a big pot or situation a smart person can try and entice the caller to show his/her hand first. Amatuers do it alot. They call the big bet and announce, I have two pair. If you are ever in a casino, you really need to pay attention to this if you are new to the game. if the person you called tries to slip their cards to the dealer, you can request to see his hand, because he has to. but if you snooze you lose, they arent going to remind you. But this situation will never arise if you dont get your panties in a wad. You can even steal DN's line if you want. "What do you got?" "What do I got, no what do you got!!! I called you!!"In home games I see this alot. One scenario I recall, a girl got called and they both just sat there. Without exaggerating it was at least 20 seconds. I spoke up and said, you were called what do you got? and she just sat there.

Against the weaker player or sometimes the tough guy, I will sometimes say, "You wish you had a part of that, or such and such card"7 times out of 10, I get a show... and when they don't .. it has been pretyy safe for me to assume a bluff or weak holding.Against a decent player... I hear in response... "You wish you knew" lol :club:

Funny that this post came up when it did. I was invited to a home game last night with people I have never played with. I decided just to play simple at the start to see what I had ahead of me and noticed one dude trying to be slick, bluffing a lot, showing one card after someone folded, just a bunch of sad made for T.V. crap. When we got down to 4 left, I started calling him slick and being sarcastically supportive of his "style". After he would put a bluff on someone, I would say "come on slick, you are dominating us, show both cards". He was second in chips and I said this each time he did it. After about 30 minutes of this he began to embrace my support and started showing both cards. The other guys saw that he was full of crap and he got called or re-raised almost every time after that. He finished fourth and was so upset he stormed out with me saying, "see ya next time slick".

Thanks for giving me credit, but I wasn't 100% positive. 90%, but not 100%. I still show too much.

Since I only play live games my strategy is simple. When I muck my hand I lie about what I fold in order to get them to show. Usually I will tell them a big hand because people like to show cards if they know you folded the best hand. Usually Ill say something like two pair "but I put you on a set" or something like that...I get a show 4 out of 5 times.

i won't tell people they have to show, but usually saying something like "i knew you hit that queen" will get them going.also calling people who are making a lot of obvious bluffs "slick" is +ev.i usually say stuff like that, because it encourages them to keep doing it, until i finally pick up a hand to pick it off. usually if i know they're bluffing but haven't picked up anything, i'll start to compliment their play to make sure they keep it up until i can make them pay.daniel

you gotta be a pretty big douche to lie to people that it's in the rules.funny i was just playing in a freeroll, and a similar situation came up.5 of us to the flop, flop came out A-8-9 but gets checked around.turn comes a 4, SB checks, i bet out just under half the pot on a complete bluff (see: freeroll), all fold back to SB who minimum checkraises. i have no idea what he could've played like this, but partially out of frustration of wasting chips, i sarcastically comment "well-played set, sir" as I fold. he shows 94o and I get my information.daniel

Anytime I want some information, I just tell him that he was bluffing. He will usually show me a pretty strong hand and not if he was, indeed, bluffing. People instinctively want to prove you wrong, so when you tell them they are bluffing, they will be more inclined to show you that they are not. The only problem is that this doesnt work against good players.
