sklansky's reply to daniel's comments (long)

Recommended Posts

didnt see the match live but im pretty sure that sklansky didnt push in every single time thus the 60/40 doesnt really apply as there was some "play" im involved in which ivey is a clear favorite post flop.  I would say ivey wins between 55-60 out of 100.
Ivey winning 55-60 means that Sklansky would be winning 40-45% of the time.. you just defeated your own reasoning and have supported Sklansky claims which you have been trying to refute

GamblinLeaf, IMO of all the posts in this thread yours is stands out as being concise, well thought out, and is probably the most accurate assessment of the situation.Well done and well said!

Three reasons come to mind:  1) Ego.  We've all got it.  He wanted to stick up for himself.2) Business.  A highly popular, world class player (Daniel) had, in Sklansky's mind, inpugned his ability.  He might have considered that he needed to defend himself or his track record in order to keep selling books, lectures, etc.3) This one is a little "out there" but I actually think it might hold the most truth.  Sklansky is a pure math guy, a math "geek" if you will (and I mean that in a good way).  My experience with pure math types is that it becomes the basis for everything they look at or deal with in life.  In some ways (and I don't mean this pejoratively), to a "math guy", math becomes something of a religion, it governs the way the universe functions.  Sklansky clearly felt that the odds that DN laid out were way off and, again, since he's a math guy, he may have taken this "ignoring of the truths of math" personally.  He may have felt the need to "defend math's honor".  It would be like if you or I said all members of such-and-such religion are morons.  That statement would best be ignored, but you know it wouldn't be.  All this might come across as comical but I think I can see where Sklansky might be coming from.Just a thought . . .

The post reproduced here, written by Sklansky, is full of great insight into poker under certain conditions. It's not at all hard to understand. Aspiring players would do well to read it carefully and try to understand it fully. The same goes for Slansky's other writings.I don't see what the hostility is all about - you don't expect a physicist to be able to design the best bridge in the world, and you don't expect an engineer to be an expert in Quantum Mechanics. A great poker player doesn't have to be a great theorist and a great theorist doesn't have to be a great poker player.

When to do it against a random hand is something only me, Chris Ferguson and a few others know well. So is knowing when to call getting 7-5 odds or so given a menu of hands that the opponent might push with. When the stacks are thirty times the big blind or less, it is impossible that a player who is not intimately familiar with this stuff could be favored over me regardless of how well he plays
Only 5 or 6 people in the world know this stuff? Please tell me he's talking about the privvied information of aliens landing on Antarctica. Or that only a few people know the intricacies of astrophysics. .
actually hes talking about mathematical game theory, on a level far too advanced for any poker book, I do believe chris fergusson's father was a game thory proffessor at ucla and that is what Jesus studied, probably also mike caro and a few others. But its seriously doubtfull that the other pros would know this stuff because we are talking pure math, not poker math.
Maybe Daniel's comments were a bit off, but the above is just absurd.  BTW, Daniel, Phil and Chan have all played and have won at "the big game."  When did you ever hear of Sklansky beating it up?  I haven't.  Maybe I'm wrong, but I just flat out think he's way out of his league and his strong defense was probably for business and maybe a bit of ego.
No offense but when Have you heard of Daniel beating it up?

they both know in the game of poker money keeps score.hence the Ivey references. Those aren't in there solely cause that who sklanksy played.i think daniels checkbook is bigger then davids.sklanksy might have a 50.1% advantage in .0001% of all poker situations.

How many times to people (read Daniel and the forum moderator) have to tell people not to attack other posters??? We all have opinions, some of you think your opinions are better than others, but how sophomoric is it to call someone stupid because you disagree witth them.

but Batman Beyond would have a better chance. I think though Spike Speigel would have the best chance( I know there have to be a few who know what I'm referencing)

Here is the breakdown.BatmanHand to hand combat: 9Physical ability: 6.5Speed: 6.5Inteligence: 9.5Tech support: 8.5Intangibles: 5SpidermanHand to hand combat: 7Physical ability: 9Speed: 8.5Inteligence: 9.5Tech suppport: 4Intangibles: 7Batman would also get some help from Robin if need be, but that's just unfair. Vehicles wouldn't help too much either as they have never helped him decisively claim victory as of yet, so I wouldn't expect them to now. They are both very smart, and while Batman is more skilled in martial arts, Spidy is faster and stronger.I'd give Spidy 3-2 to beat Batman. Sorry Jay.

What started out as a fairly contentious debate has turned into one of the most enjoyable threads I've read in a long time! Now ... how would y'all rate a steel cage royal rumble between Batman, Spider-Man, Wolverine and Daredevil?

Is that even a question? Wolverine hands down. Spiderman is king in an open format, like a city, so he's toast in a cage. Batman would be the real threat, but Wolverine specializes in close hand to claw combat.I'll try to ignore the fact that you slid a B-list superhero like Daredevil in there, don't ever do it again.

In DN fashion, here is my prediction for the Batman/Spiderman fight.Batman chases Spidy through the city in his Jetplane, barely missing Spidy in many instances. Thinking on his feet, Spidy will knock out the Bat Jet with some sort of web antics and disable it. The fight will take to the streets, where webs and Bat-morangs go flying. Spidy eventually gets ahold of the utility belt in an effort to undermine the tech aspect of the fight, although Bats will have prepared some sort of self destruct device to temporarily confuse and hurt Spidy. Spidy will run out of web juice, and it will be a straight up fight, in which the edge has to go to Spiderman who is stronger and faster. What a matchup though, probably the two smartest superheros on the planet going heads up for all the chips.

im still taking batman... i'll give the match an over under of about 15 minutes, since he will have to take some time to formulate a good plan and catch the little bastard...as far as the cage match goes.... wolverine. hands down. i'm now taking bets on science vs. religionblack vs. whitewe have a few more matches that nobody here can even conceive who would win coming up... so keep hypothesizing on crap ya have no idea about............i'll keep ya posted

I think 3-2 is a little easy really, but i'd tweak the stats a little especially intelligence, batmanintelligence 8.0 at best peter parker is a science whiz and bruce wayne a trust fund inherited business man,not the same, besides everyone knows alfred is the intelligence.now if you add support staff, battman has robin, who Lets face against anything other than a non mutant human bad guy is worthless, bat girl same, but if you add in spiderman and his amazing frinds fire starter and iceman, the d.c boys have been shut down, but then everyone knows marvel is better anyways.

now the gloves are coming off  daredevil b-list superheroactually i would put daredevil over batman anyday of the week.but as far as the cage match thats not even a contest, as wolverines admantium shell claws and unbelievable regeneration powers make him pretty much invinceable to anything the others have, wolverine really fits more in the super-super heroes list, the guys with so much power they cant be beat by the standards.

Here's the deal. Only one of the heroes mentioned has super physical abilities and that's Spider-Man. Each of the others is an elite-level comic book athlete, which, according to the source material, means they can bench somewhat less than 800 pounds. Spidey can bench 10 tons, which means he's 25 times stronger than the others. The X-factor (pun) is Wolverine's healing ability and adamantium skeleton, which means that no matter how much he's pummelled, you can't really end the fight. I'd lay 4-5 on Spidey and 5-1 on Wolverine to win but I wouldn't even touch the rest.
