Ron_Mexico 4,219
whats the point of a gated community if you let anyone who happens to be at the door through? The gated community is an illusion. It's not real. I live in a gated community. We want people to get out of our way at the gate, and we don't care if they follow us in. It's a false sense of security You want real security, become a baller and live in a building with a doorman

You think you're memorable enough for a door person to remember from a week earlier? Adorable Even I wouldn't expect that, and I kind of stand out
SuitedAces21 2,721
considering not that many people live in that building, and i reminded her who i was and that i had met her before, yes i expected her to let me in. which she didn't. my dad had left his phone inside while walking the dog so i had to wait 15 minutes, it was the height of discourtesy on her part. my dad complained to the board and had her fired. Scroom 436
So there was this really weird lowpoint for American manufacturing- the late 90's and early 00's- where industrial machines were being sold for scrap value. Extremely expensive, ridiculously valuable machines that could perform all sorts of manufacturing tasks, were being sold for what they could be melted down for. I remember guys posting on forums, lamenting the loss of vertical Bridgeport mills, lathes, shapers, hydraulic ironworkers, if you couldn't find a Chinaman willing to crate it up and ship it to Asia, or some retired old guy willing to put it in his garage, they were being scrapped. Fast forward to today, the exact opposite is true. The market for used manufacturing tooling is on fire. I was looking for a decent hydraulic feed bandsaw with a water cooling option for hopefully next to nothing, apparently, people are not only buying this used manufacturing shit again, but the new market is actually making a bunch of new units, too. Apparently, the Chinese are opening factories here in the US left an right. http://www.manufacturing.net/news/2015/09/chinese-railcar-company-break-ground-us-plant The good news is, since we've gone two generations without any meaningful industrial education and most all of them are "men" with 'ology degrees who fill out paperwork for a living, the pay for people actual maker skills is going through the roof. As you said, they merely provide a false sense of security. When we moved to our new place here, that was my biggest request...not having to deal with a guard gate. At our last place, it was such a hassle whenever anyone visited...they could only go through the front gate and had to wait for the guard to check their ID and call us. When we forgot our clicker or it wasn't working, we had to do the same...sometimes the guard went off on patrol or sometimes there was a line. Visiting my wife's parents is the same. Fortunately this one where we moved has a code box, so it's not much of a hassle.

Napa Lite 3,278
Just put a deposit down on a place, assuming I pass the background check. 2 bed/1.5 baths. Allows dogs. The unit they showed me was nicer than my current place. Hopefully the one I'm getting is equally nice. If not, oh well. Screw it. ive lived in shitty places before.

Ron_Mexico 4,219
Oh Nevermind We just got our new guest mattress and bed frame. I was holding out hope my old rig would be free sooner rather than later and we could keep the 3rd room for an office or whatever, but that dream is dead.
Scroom 436
The greatest advantage ISIS has isn't men or machines or technology. Its their willingness to fight war as wars are supposed to be fought, whereas we've become weak. They know this. http://articles.philly.com/1986-01-15/news/26052630_1_hostage-crisis-soviet-captives-islamic-liberation-organization
