my first casino tourney....and i need some advice.

Recommended Posts

This I do know. I also learned the hard way in one of my first tourneys about string betting...(with pocket aces).
No also. Your alone on that. It seems pretty regular for me to just say," let's make it..."Still I've seen bunch of ish go down because someone didn't verbalize what they intended. You knew that... So one down. Make sure to tell us about how you did. When you make money you'll obviously know what place you finished. In the unlikely chance you finish out of money. You can guesstimate by counting the amount of tables left, and then you've got your place (give or take ten or so people).300 peeps is alot, but I wouldnt change your game at all. You've played in tourny's with almost 100 people, so do it to it.

Card protectors are pointless. Seriously. Wtf are you protecting your cards from? Is there going to be a huge gust of wind inside the casino? Is the dealer going to accidentally reach behind your chips and muck your hand in the middle of play? Are angry railbirds going to jump down and steal your cards? If you've got a lucky coin or trinket that is cool. Or if you're using a fossil like Raymer that can start up some table conversation that is cool as well.
If someone recklessly throws their cards into the muck and one happens land on or near your hand that is unprotected, your hand could be ruled dead. I've seen it happen once in a small tourny.

Bring a small razor so you can mark the deck. Also wear a long sleeved shirt so you can steal a card or two and then swap em when you've got rags (you have to be very sneaky so no one notices you mucking just one card) also, steal chips from opponents stacks when they arent looking and find a few players who are willing to slide you some chips for a little cash. Also pick an annoying tv theme song to sing over and over and over tillyour opponents are so annoyed they cant even think straight.Seriously, do all of the above. You've got to get as much of an edge as possible whatever way you can.

Keep in mind that your average B&M poker player is there for fun, not profit. I'm not sure if this really applies to tournament play, since I've never played a casino tournament, but the ring game players are AWFUL!!! Take your time in the early rounds to get a feel for your table, the biggest mistake I make in live play is wanting to play far too many hands. Pick your spots and you'll be fine. Oh yeah, like everyone else said, PROTECT YOUR CARDS! The dealers job is to keep the action moving, and most of them won't think twice about sweeping an unprotected hand into the muck while you're looking the other way.

Uh, wow this was ignorant.
No doubt. He should be referred to my story of the guy at the table who made fun of card protectors, only to have me muck his hand he just raised with as I folded them directly into his cards. Dealer: "Excuse me, that's a dead hand sir, you should protect your cards at all times." Talk about learning the hard way.

I would practice online first. It definately won't give you a feel for live action, however you can practice different strategies. All of the online sites have major guarantee tourneys that you can play in. I played in pokerroom's 20k guarantee 9pm et last night and there were 790 entries. I ended up finishing in 20th place. Also, in the beginning of the tourney when the blinds are small (5/10, 10/15, 15/20) it's not really necessary to be in a lot of the action. At this point it's important to play tight. This will do a number of things. Most importantly setting your table image as a tight player so when you do come into the hand with a raise people will respect it. As well, when you do come in for a raise you should make it three to four times the big blind. For that matter, ANY raise should be consistent. Always raise the same amount (3x bb) this way you won't give any additional information on the strength of your hand.I definately would not get shitfaced during the tourney, but if a glass of scotch helps you relax than go for it. Just don't CONTINUE to drink throughout the tourney or the sharks will rip you apart. An important principal that no one has discussed is position. You probably already know this but in early position you should only be coming into the pot with monster hands. As your position gets closer to the button you can loosen up your starting hand requirements. If you raise in early position you have eight or nine players acting after you who can wake up with monster hands. This leaves you open for people to come over the top of your raise. However, in later position you only have a few people acting after you and the odds of one or two people waking up with a monster go down drastically.Good luck and haave fun.

Have you considered wearing boxer shorts and a sleevless shirt. Make sure the button for the pee pee hole is undone so at some point in the tourney, you will flop the nutz.

Since I dont have the best memory in the world, Ill take a 3x5 notebook with me, just one of those little ones that can fit in your pocket, since there's gonna be 30+ tables, you could end up at a few different ones and end up with players that you played with a few hours earlier, so Ill take notes like if someone always raises in their big blind, or if someone always taps a finger on the table when holding an ace, just anything you think might give you an edge, then if someone I played with earlier sits down, Ill look back to see if Ive written anything about them, and Ill glance through it during breaks to refresh. Plus writing it down will also help you to remember anyways. People will make fun for you having a notebook, but you wont mind so much when youre depositing their money.

True story.Heads-up in the one seat I had an A high flush draw turn into a straight on the river. I bet out, the other guy knew I rivered his ass, stood up and power mucked his hand, blasted thru the muck pile, picked up a few other cards and all crashed right into my hand. I had a chip on them but all the cards scattered into one big face down messy pile. I protested and called the floor and was eventually awarded the pot after 10 minutes of yelling and investiagating. The loser got a 20 minute penalty! Horrible situation. My advice is get a good card protector...like a small refridgerator or something. And try like Hell to resist using the 'Daniel Negreanu card protector' at all costs...(sorry D but that is one lame ass piece of shizzle!).Best...

Wow what a great tournament - 550 US x 300 players = $165,000Prize pool 60,000+ = casino making some mad money
it's $500 + 50, which means the pool = $150000, the house gets $15000 and first place = $60000

Has anyone covered the big chip rule? If so move/flame on. Example:Someone makes it $100 to go and it is your turn to act. You toss in a $500 chip with the intention of a raise. If you do not say "raise" in a casino this would count as a call only. You can raise with this $500 chip but you need to declare verbally before you act by saying "raise". You can say "$400" and that 500 chip will count as 400 and the dealer will make you change. Make sure the dealer is listening because if they don't hear, it doesn't count. If you aren't a fan of talking you need to put in $500 in $100 or smaller chip denominations. Be careful of saying things that are open to interpretation like "Raise 400" or "Raise it to 400". Of course these mean two different things, but invariably there will be a total misunderstanding. I usually say just the number I am going to put in "400 straight" or "400 total". Just make sure you are clear with any of your verbal statements. Since there is a good amount of verbal action in tourneys I would suggest no headphones your first time out.Good Luck!

Yeah the DN Card protector is pretty horrible. I have one of those winner's buttons from a tourney, but I think they're pompus so I use, no lie, a pokemon coin from the old TCG. Nothing says fish like Pikachu on top of your cards.Regarding the power muck, did you nut sack kick that bastard later on outside of the casino?Ray

Now, I've played many BM no-limit tourneys in the last year (all private games, once a week, mostly in the $100 buy-in range, anywhere from 15-85 people), have won the last 4You've won 4 tourneys in a row with 15-85 entries in each?I don't think you need our help. But since you ask, I have a great strategy. Don't shower for a week leading up to the event. Don't brush your teeth for three days leading up to the event. Make sure to leave a few skid marks on your boxers. Eat a pound of beans before every level of play. You'll smell so bad it'll put everyone at your table on tilt.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all of it.Now my main question wasn't answered....Should I drive out the night before and get a hotel room, wake up late and enjoy a nice breakfast etc. or just wake up early and drive straight?

If you call it "the last table" and say "I've got some game", and don't know any tournament strategy, then you probably don't "got some game."
Sorry....the FINAL table.I know tournament strategy...I've been playing no-limit tourneys once a week for a year. But never in a casino. Stuff like making sure I have snacks etc. was exactly the stuff I've been looking for. For instance...are their breaks in play to get food etc.? The chip protector was a great bit of advice as well. Also, the dealers that have taught me are the same dealers that played with Daniel and I have sat with Daniel at a poker table while he's played (...and the man is a mind reader).. I have a recent picture of the two of us with our arms around each other over my desk. It drives my poker buddies nuts. One client saw the photo in my office and told me I'm not allowed to come to any of his poker games. LOL :)Ronnie

I would say it doesn't matter as much as how much you're going to drink. IMO you shouldn't drink at all, but if you are, drive up the night before.
