Who's Coaching Who?

I think the whole range of compensation options to potential coaches is interesting. Of course, not rocket science. What caused me to think about this is...how does the player know how much the "coaching" really is "worth?" Let's say the short stack coming into the FT ends up taking it down (like Jerry Yang), or even moving up several money spots...would he attribute that to the "coaching" he received or to something else? How do you quantify the impact a coach has?So, rather than taking an upfront fee/retainer, or even simply a %/cut of their "winnings," my bet is that potential coaches will get more creative than that in striking a deal w/players.For example, we know for certain what the chip counts & seat positions of the 9 players left will face in Nov are. Kelly Kim, the short stack, is in the 8 seat, and is sandwiched between Ivan Demidov, the 2nd chip leader w/T24M and Peter Eastgate, the 4th chip stack w/T18+M. He has 4x less chips than the next short stack, Marquis, who has T10+M. Relative to the rest of the table, that's not an enviable position. It "looks like" he should be going home with $900k.But what happens if, instead of taking 9th, like he "should," given chip stack & position, he moves up 4 spots and takes 6th? That's a payout difference of $1.5 MILLION!Look at these payout jumps:1 $ 9,119,5172 $ 5,790,024 3 $ 4,503,352 4 $ 3,763,515 5 $ 3,088,012 6 $ 2,412,510 7 $ 1,769,174 8 $ 1,286,672 9 $ 900,670 So, how about a coaching compensation scheme that pays out based in part on the increase from the player's current chip stack/position at the table. A % of the INCREASE of their "current" or "expected" payout, etc? A 25% cut of just the INCREASE of Kim's "expected payout" would yield a coach potentially hundreds of thousands!Another idea would be to tie the player's fee to the increase in traffic/business to that coach's website or future customers, and I'm guessing that some coaches will advertise on the player's outfit at the FT.In addition, obv. the coach benefits significantly in that they (and the WSOP announcers) get to say that "they" coached the 2008 WSOP player. That's just a couple of ideas, I'm sure the coaches will come up w/more creative ones.

This has nothing to do with the coaching aspect of this final table, but I did over hear an interesting conversation that took place just outside the doors of the Amazon room. Someone (an oriental with a very business like suit, possibly lawyer/agent type, or could have been representing a company trying to sponsor players for final table) was talking with a couple of guys. It appeared he was trying to sell them on a representation/agent agreement. He was saying that they were at that point offering set fees to each of the players that were left (33 at that time), it sounded to me like they got paid whether or not they made the final table. I didn't hear much more than that other than him mentioning the amoutn of $25,000 for one of the players (I don't remember the name). I assumed the people he was talking to were either friends of a player or they were representing one of the players. I stood and listened as much as I could, but they started talking low and shielding their conversation from me when they noticed me standing near by.
rugs are oriental.people are Asianon another note..jjprodigy will coach the whole ftand f u king

I think Chino Rheem has a great shot to win this. He and the Mizrachi bros, JC Tran, Quinn Do and others all traded pieces of each other for the WSOP. He is a great player and will have all these guys around for the next 4 months helping him because they already have a vested interest the outcome.

Since most of these guys are pros I don't really see them giving up a big chunk of cash for advice. I'm sure lots of there friends would be willing to help.Maybe one of the amatuers might. If I was going to hire a coach I think it would be in a specific area of expertise. If I felt weak at tells I might look to Joe Navarro for example. If I was unsure of what to expect at a final table I would look to a pro with alot of final table experience. I think the biggest help might be from analyzing the other players over the next 4 months watching any and all footage looking for patterns and tells that might help.I really doubt if we'll see something like Jamie Gold did with Johnny Chan standing behind him all the time.

Bolded is a great idea. Get him to study all the videos available. And keep it top secret, which he excels at too.

From some stuff that Navarro has said in the past I don't think he'd be willing to point out tells in opponents. Might be worth hiring him to point out any tells that you exhibit though.

i think chino might be more marketable than originally thought, he came in 2nd to allen cunningham in like '06 and then this year he came in the mixed hold em event as chip leader, the same event that E-dog won, which i think is being aired on espn, but I think he will be a decent surprise as far as marketing goes

And he wrote his book for charity too.without sw, I think he said something along the lines of that about the top pros but I think hiring him to work on a group of "unkowns" for a nice amount goes into the "grey" acceptable area

If I had to pick a coach for the FT, I would surely go with someone that has a top notch reputation and who is feared everywhere he plays...... I don't know what will be his asking rate per hour, but I'm pretty sure that it would be +EV.....You guys know who I'm talking about.......luckymellodm8.jpgLucky Mello FTMFW, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

If I made the Final Table I'd select Phil Hellmuth as my coach. If he's not available then I'd select GrinderMJ.
Yeah me too, oh wait, <insert evil laugh> muahahahahaha!!!!
