JubilantLankyLad 1,957
so is that a yay or a nay on the hp laptop I linked?looks like I should have reread your post from when I read it a few minutes ago. but anyways, I'm almost certain I'm gonna get the cheaper one, but can't quite pull the trigger. given I have absolutely zero desire in even owning a desktop, do you think that is a good one? I hate to go and buy another model of the company type that is currently messed up, but I don't really know of any other reliable options. (dell sucks).bluetooth is awesome

SBriand 4
as it should be; they provide excellent customer serviceactually they don't. Anytime I need to buy something I do it online and use the store pick up so I don't have to talk to a floor person who will try and sell me hundreds of dollars in warranties, accessories, plans, etc. But I do love going over at lunch and walking around playing with shit. strategy 4
actually they don't. Anytime I need to buy something I do it online and use the store pick up so I don't have to talk to a floor person who will try and sell me hundreds of dollars in warranties, accessories, plans, etc. But I do love going over at lunch and walking around playing with shit.there are occasionally really nice deals at best buy online. I just ordered a 1TB external WD mybook for $70 shipped.

checkymcfold 0
well the main things I want are 4gb/500gb and a slightly smaller frame (16" looks ideal) and it looks like to get both of those I'm gonna have to get up to the 800 range. I tell you, the main thing I want though I don't think is even searchable, at least not that I've found: I want one with loud ass speakers. about 50% of my usage is as a damn stereo basically, and I don't think I've ever seen one that gets loud enough for my tastes. oh well.the hp laptops that have altec lansing speakers (they may only be in the 17"+s, i'm not sure) have pretty good sound for a laptop. a lot of those go on ubid.com as refurbs--i got a 2GHz 17" HP on there with pretty good-sounding AL speakers for 600 a year ago, when the laptop was going for over 1k new. if you're new to ubid, basically only bid on things that have multiple bids already, bc some of their stuff is crap, but it won't get any bids. alternatively, they probably make wireless speakers these days that would work just fine in a small place from anywhere.as to the hd, have you thought about a portable drive or perhaps using your old laptop as a wireless storage thingy? that way you can just drop 100 on a terabyte or two, leave it hooked up to the old laptop, and get at your music/porn from a distance. laptops with very large hard drives are usually going to cost you a lot more than you need, outside of the space, and doing things that way could probably save you a couple hundred at least.in general, i always argue that a laptop should just be durable and do the basics, a desktop should be the real beast, and that pretty much everyone should have both. I like to take it to friends' houses and what not, trade music, use as a stereo, etc. that and I'm scared of losing the bulk of my stuff if the external crashes (although I know I could just get another external for backup). I do like the idea of the wireless speakers though. I'll have to look into those.

donk4life 34
if your blender started ruining smoothies and shooting sparks, would you send it in under warranty?hope you kept the box. I save the boxes from all the stuff that looks like it'd be a pain in the ass to safely ship.I know, looking back on it probably was a silly question. I wasn't sure if I needed to check video cables/cards or anything else that could be a problem I could easily fix. The process of sending it in takes a long time and I wanted to avoid it if at all possible.

Sal Paradise 57
ffs, if it isn't one thing it's 57 fucking others...my internet has always been pretty choppy at best (mtarcypos, I know) and a lot of times I'd have to reset both the modem and my router to get it back up. well, for the past couple of days I've had to reset my router (linksys wrt54g) like every 10 minutes or so. does this just mean it's going bad or is there some setting on it or on my new computer that's causing it to lose connection?also, if it's going bad, and I have heard that linksys is crap, what would one recommend for a nice wireless router? (wrt600n if you can find it, otherwise wrt610n)and you can do a firmware upgrade regardless of the version (as strat mentioned sometimes 3rd party ones are better and/or offer more functionality but a new linksys one could help too). you also may just need a new cable modem - call your ISP and ask them to send a new one.
