Why Are Poker Players Trash?

I'm playing in an sng and this guy duval76, I think it's OK to call him out, said your mother blah blah blahThe guy responds saying his mother is dead.He responds I'd say I'm sorry, or that I care, but I don't lie.This just really really bothered me and it set something off in me.People are just becoming more and more cold and I notice a decent amount of poker players are just utter scum, even more so than the general population.Why is this?

Because we're all degenerates, or under-age, or both. It's very rare to see a genuinely nice guy because they're usually very professional, a newbie/fish or a reasonably rare person. I mean even here, where great players a nice guys come to chat and talk poker, there is a very sarcastic and down atmosphere.

pffft, any place people can type insults & not be personally accountable will quickly devolve into this type of behaviour-- like little kids who don't get punished for being bad, so they keep acting out.the internet needs a time out corner. or someone to administer the occasional spanking.

welcome to the forum; a poker forum; where you used your first post (and took the time to sign up) to say that poker players are scumit sounds like that guy was a jackass, but realistically you were upset at one guy who wasn't even talking to you; is it really worth getting worked up overeither way, I am sure that you will be an invaluable member to this forum (I think the sw is healthily implied)

I am not trying to start a fight, but which thread are you referring to? I found one thread where you talked about how people who flame on the Internet could one day get shot by a psychopath (I assume that is the thread to which you are referring), but if it is, I believe that I am missing the point of what you wrote. I mean, you gave up that day and said you were leaving the forum and deleted your post, so how did that show any retribution. Again, not trying to instigate but I am interested in what you are referring to; I think poker players get hostile because of the fact that they are losing money; nobody likes losing money and since it is bad players who talk smack and insult others (good players have learned to roll with bad beats), they are losing money and are going to get angry;

Sometimes I can say some pretty nasty things at a table when variance has just finished kicking my *** and I'm steaming. I regret it after...of course I never really wish what I say on whoever I say it to.

One of my greatest joys is getting people's chat banned. Anything of a profane nature, sexual orientation, dead mothers...etc. I tell support that my "playing experience" has been sullied by this persons behavior and I would appreciate them looking into the chat logs. Works everytime.But that's just me.*L*T*

this is a good point. people who are saying its because they can and not be attacked physically by the other person are simplifying the issue. i've noticed this for some time, and thats that online poker seems to bring out the worst in alot of people.i dont know if its because players see poker as a "war" and put themselves into that mindframe. if their defnces are up and believe everyone at the table is out to get them (or their money atleast). its not uncommon for players to develop hatreds/vendettas towards opponents who take away pots from them or even beat them legitimately. the simple fact is, most people dont have a very good grip on their emotions. it took me roughly a year to recognize that getting upset over things i cant control (bad beats/bad cards etc.) is the most counter productive thing you can do when playing poker. it can carry over to the rest of your day and ultimately contributes to you playing poor poker/losing more money.so please everyone, just focus on what you can control, be a respectful at the table and you will feel better about yourself and good things will happen for you.

There would be times when I would just be messing around at a table and just for a joke I would be the biggest prick possible. Someone would say nice hand and I would reply "go **** your mother". It was all a joke though and after a little while I would apologize and tell the guy I was joking, they would usually get a good laugh out of it in the end
