taking a run at vegas? your experience....

Recommended Posts

So I may be getting laid-of in the next month from my career i've been working at for the last 6 years. It's left a bitter taste in my mouth, and I'm about ready to leave it all behind. I'm no pro, but I'm thinking long and hard about taking a stab at vegas for about a month to build a BR to go travelling. I've been playing everyday for about 18 months and have shown steady profit in cash games & tourneys, even playing at a pretty tough B&M room in my hometown. In two trips to vegas, I've made about $1100 each time by placing in a couple tourneys and grinding out in NL games against dumb tourists. I'd love to hear some thoughts / experiences from those who have gone down similar paths. Realistically, I could head down there with about a $3000 BR. Am I delusional here thinking I can turn that into $10K or so in 3-4 weeks? Have any of you done something similar.. I'd like to hear from you - particularly canadains, but anyone really. what are some things i should be aware of? anything you can contribute - the more detail the better.Cheers

He had me at the first paragraph. I don't even have to read on. I'm in.Yes you are delusional? 3k into 10K in a few weeks. Everything has to go right. Living expenses, etc.If it doesn't, then what?

Take the $3000 US and convert it to Can$. You'll be almost 1/2 way to 10K right there. Turning 3K to 10K would in 3-4 weeks seems like it would take an exceptional win rate, but the hemroids from the horseshoe up your ass would probably become painful after a while. I'd just go put it on red twice and hope to double up that way.Not saying it can't be done, but you'd probably have to play outside your bankroll and have a good stretch.Good luck, though. I hope you make it happen.

Compared to the River Rock, the 1/2 NL tables and low buy-in tourneys in vegas are like pre-school. It's ridiculous. And you actually get some pretty decent players at the end of the tourneys there i've found. Anyway, looks like I wont be getting laid off after all.. Im actually a little dissapointed.

Friday and Saturday nights 1-2 nl at the River Rock, making money is as easy as making a 1 foot putt.

why go to vegas?Change that 7k win from 3 weeks to a month. play 50 hours a week * 4 weeks= 200 hrs*4 tables*60hands/hr= 48k hands at the 5/10 which is acceptable with your 3k bankroll. win at a 2BB/100 rate, which is up to you at that many hands, luck won't be the determining factor at almost 50k. Poof, there is 4800 in winnings, tack on a couple signup bonuses and a solid rakeback program and you should easily pick up the other 2200 if not a lot more. I know I couldnt play this much, not to mention the fact that i am not good enough to play 5/10 regularly.**according to rakebackrus 48000 hands of 5/10 limit will generate a rebate of $2628/ month if on a 25% program, and $4387.5 if playing 65000 hands of 5/10 shorthanded on a 25% program.

Ya. i'd have to say you are looking at this all wrong. If you jump to Vegas with 3k expecting to win. You sir are screwed. You need to approach this situation like a new career a life changing event.Perhaps you should thinkabout making 500.00 a week for starters. play some 5/10 10/20. or if you are a NL player, hop on some 100 - 200nl tables. and do it that way.online or at a B&M. w.e. works., but i think making a trip to vegas will hurt you.You wont be playing your proper game (you will be scared)You will have too high expectations after 2 wins since last time u left.

I'm from Vancouver as well and I certainly don't find the people at River Rock very good at all. I went there during both weekdays and weekends and yes I do find the games on weekends way looser with more donks and all, but even during weekdays it isn't that hard to beat the NL game. You just have to wait for a hand and you will get pay off. Haven't tried any of the tournies there yet. Which ones do you play in? I'm thinking about joining those $30 ones in the morning and see what it is like.

I'll make a long weekend run to Vegas with $3K, but I don't think I've lost my mind enough to believe that I could surivive out there more than 2 weeks with $3K if I had to pay for living expenses and food and electricity and water and rent and deposits and then to play on top of that.Let's just say you better have the rush of your life in the first 1/2NL game you sit in on if you want to make it through the first month.

I don't mean to be rude, but if you can't beat the 1/2 NL or 2/4 Limit games at the River Rock, Poker is not a good way for you to make a living.

Thanks for all the reponses. First, yes the River Rock games are beatable, and I have beat them consistently, but your typical 1/2 NL game in vegas is much more so. Much much more so. yes there are plenty of monkeys, but also some pretty skilled players with BRs to back it up. Myabe im just sour on the rock cuz one night i took two incredible beats in an hour, both times getting my money with top set and losing to running cards. i know i know, its poker - it happens. but sweet jesus. that was a huge chunk of my BR. To answer someone's question, the tourney's are good there, very well organized and pretty decent structures. It's pretty easy to make your way through about 2/3's of the field, after that considerably tougher. The 10am ones i dont like so much, very fast structure and tends to be a lotto. Thyanks for the advice, I've definately reconsidered. Think I'll maybe do a long weekend or two in vegas and tackle most of it online. Thats where Ive made most of my money anyway. this Smasharoo strategy you mention, ive seen it referenced many times on this forum.. what is it? where can i find it? i
