Is Poker Going Back To Its Youthful Days?

Recommended Posts

Poker is a mature game, in the sense that's it been around for awhile now. Before the Chris Moneymaker and online poker explosion, poker was still a child in many ways. After 2003, our little poker has finally started to grow up, and since then has been getting stronger and stronger. With the recent internet bills being passed and online banking systems pulling out of the loop, it seems like poker is taking a step backwards. If it does happen, internet poker going down and out. Will poker go back its youthful days? Will we see a reduction in the amount of players in big tournaments? Will the cocky, aggressive internet kids we see on TV all the time go and get a real job?I know that poker itself will never die. However, I think it's possible and unfortunately very likely that things won't always be like they have been the past 4 years.Grapes!

I think if this online poker ban really does take a solid hold, it will kill alot of the poker boom. Fewer WSOP entries, and if people aren't play regular game online, alot of lost interest. When American's don't see something right in front of them, they forget. I don't think it will matter that its on TV 24/7 if they can't play some.... I realize home games continue, but for others the bar games will lose interest quick. We may have a rounders situation with hundreds of underground games popping up?Sorry, that got off track. FYI Hillary Clinton has announced she's running for president.

I'd say that poker in the U.S. will definetly slow down. But in Europe and Asia, and Australia there will still be strong growth. The WSOP and WPT may have smaller numbers but the EPT will probably not be too affected by the recent events. Let's not forget that poker is a worldwide "sport".

In all honesty I don't think online or live poker will change dramatically within the next few years. I think that obv as somebody else pointed out, it is still very big online elsewhere. The scandinavian countries, UK and australia really do play a hell of a lot. Due to the time differences you may not act see that poker rooms are still as very busy even when it is nighttime over in the states. I think the WSOP main event will have the same amout of players as this year, to think it will dramatically change is crazy. First off a lot of people do buy directly into it, not just the pros but the steve dannemans, the rich buisness man etc. Also a lot of online kids in the USA can spare 10k quite easily. Alot of people have $ in thier account, and I'm sure within months companies will be pushing the new way to deposit. Just because of all this crazyness in the USA right now, in the short term there may be a slight down turn as people don't know whats going on, (as nor do the companies). But give it 6 months and a new system will be out, somebody always see an oportunity and I wouldn't be suprised if places like pokerstars actually set up thier own methods. I can't see companies or people who have put a lot of effort into the game over years and years just giving up so quickly, just because you can't use the easiest methods to make transactions. I think a new system will either be created, or existing ones be promoted even more.

Wanna bet? I'll lay $50 that there's more than 1000 entries at 2007 WSOP ME.
If Harrah's follows through on not allowing 3rd party entries to this thing, do you really think there will be that many people who put up their own $10K? It might be over 1k, yes, but it won't be ANYWHERE near 8k, i guarantee.

As I live in England european poker is definitely growing. The field of the EPT is getting much bigger at every event. There are no internet bans on poker so I can't see that closing down and although the case at the gutshot was lost this just means that poker is going to be more directly influenced by governments and then casinos. Gambling in general is also experiencing a boom in Asia and as for Australia that has the most % of it's population gambling of any country in the world. In my eyes anyway an increase in gambling in general increases the amount of people playing poker.

Why is everyone estimating 1000 - 4000 Entries for the M.E in 2007?IM thinking around 10,000 entries since its almost doubled every year since 2003.or maybe im missing out on somthing here

the fields have been ussually around 60-70% internet qualifiers. Harrahs has said it will not let websites directly buyin players like in the past. The pokersites will still run sattelites but they will give the cash to the player and they can do what they want with it. That is why the field will be smaller. Sites like Bodog overlayed quite a bit of money on qualifiers last year to get some good numbers at the event. They probally wont be overlaying so much when some people will just take the cash.

WSOP 2006 > 8000 entries.WSOP 2007 < 1000 entries.
last year there was 8700 players and about 4400 were from online. that means about 4300 paid there way into the main event. every year the number keeps rising so i think it will be about 5500 players

I honestly think people need to settle down for a second. Yeah, the battle looks insanely bad for poker right now, but very very soon, the World Trade Organization is going to rule on as to whether the US is complying with WTO mandates regarding online gambling AT LEAST with companies based in Antigua and Barbuda. As one can obviously tell, they aren't, and if one of the world's superpowers is threatened to be thrown out of or put on probation in the WTO, then they will either have to start changing their tune or face losing a lot of economic prospects for its citizens all for fighting a stupid moral battle that should not have been started in the first place. You just watch, things will change for the better in the next 2-3 months.

No offence but I don't think that this argument is viable. Wishfull thinking aside. First of all the WTO basically is made up by the United States the US breaks the rules in its own favour of the WTO whenever it sees fit. On top of that there is no way that they are going to go apeshit over internet gambling as it has shady aspects in the eyes of the companies themselves and im sure the WTO. The WTO is set up to do the bidding of the extremely rich corporations so that they can get cheap labour in countries other than the US and use its power to get at the resources of these other less economically robust countries. And I think the internet is a different beast for the WTO I don't really believe that they focus on ecommerce much if at all. I don't like whats happening with online poker just like you and everyone else on here, but I dont think that the WTO is by anyway an answer we are dealing with gambling here folks and imo its gonna be dam hard to reverse what this government has done to the poker industry.

If I won a $12k package from a satellite, there's about 0% chance I'd be taking it and playing the wsop. I'd think I'm in the majority there.
Well im sure they would make you pick up the package in vegas at the time of the event, so that would be difficult to say the least. People are'nt just gonna forget about the WSOP the demand will still be there but it will just be a little more difficult to find satellites.

You know that the WTO has already ruled against the US in regards to a similiar issue, right? The Antigua decision about sportsbooks online accepting US wagers?

No I did'nt. You may be right, but I do not think that the United States gov't will back off because of the WTO, they run the WTO bottom line. Although I hope that I am wrong.
