I told my best friend today that I want to play poker for a living.  Even she didn't take it well (Not that I expected anything else).  Am I dillusional for wanting to play for a living?
yes, at least you like self-torture. but most of us would like to at some point probably. at least a nice side income.

I just don't want this to get buried. I'm having a tough time with this question.
I think absolutely not. Everyone wants to play for a living. They lie if they say they don't else they wouldn't be here. What you have to be careful of is having the discipline to make it viable. That's the part that people who dismiss it don't think will ever work. Only you know if you can be self disciplined enough.
More want than that. Want as in you wanting to be whatever you are. As in that's what I should be doing. The more I think about it, the more I wonder why I tell people I want to do anything else (aside from public scorn).I do have the discipline. That's never been something I lacked. I worked my roll up from .01/.02. For the most part, I followed bankroll management. That's never been hard for me to grasp. As you can see, I've been sitting on this for a while.

jay do you mean your morning crap, or just crap you have to do in the morning.i can never crap in the morning.i can also never crap in mourning.well i should never say never becasue sometimes i can,but lots of times if i might have to at night i'll just go to sleep and then in the morning i don't have to or don't have time. but then i get to work and our office is so small i just don't really want to be in there with the other two guys right outside the door. and then i feel as if my whole day is ruined. of course often i am alone in the office and then i can do whatever i want.anyway this is how bored i am.  ....pretending to compile data and look at subdivision plans.
Is it mandatory that we report our bowel movements? I'm typically like a student driver...I hold them at 10 and 2. Breaks the day nicely.

Doug,I say if you really want to do it go for it. The only thing I would say though is wait. By waiting I mean, graduate college and get a 9-5 job. It doesn't have to be something spectacular, just something that pays the bills. I don't know what your bankroll is, and it really doesn't matter, but what I would do is get to the highest level you can crush, and then start putting profits away in a bank account. Once you get an amount that you are comfortable living off of for a few months if you don't make anything, I say quit your job and do it.Just some things to think about though, at least in terms of personal things that you should consider. Health plan, dental plan (maybe), car insurance, rent, etc. Honestly I don't want to burst your bubble, cause I would love to be able to say that I know who you are when you hit it big, but I would say unless you hit the lottery, it's gonna be some work before you can live off poker. But if it's truly what you want to do, I'm sure you will figure out how to do it.

John, not to be rude, but did you read my posts?  I addressed these issues a few posts up.  I suggest you reread them.
You wanted thoughts I gave you thoughts, if I said something you already have taken care of then don't worry about it.and yes I did read them

Honestly, I think you should give it a few years before you even consider this. Personally, I want to go back to school and find a job that has a steady income. I have lived off of things that are far from steady income for the past 5 years, and its rather unfulfilling. I wouldn't even make the defining line at 15/30 for what you can live off of. You always need to be honest with yourself and really know what you want to do, and I don't think that you can really make those decisions at 18. I would also give the major that you are in some more time and see how much you really might like it or dislike it. Most majors suck at first. Making this decision is a massive step, and its one not to be taken lightly. Living off of poker is very hard and we all see who makes all of the money and want to have that too. Most players are break-even and are losing players, which is not to say that you are. The games are easy at the limits that you play at now, but it is much harder to be a successful player at higher limits, and this is something that you have to consider. I really think that you should give this much more time to think about and give yourself a few more years. THere is a lot to consider and the tax man isn't exactly all that friendly on gamblers. While it sounds cool to say that you are a professional poker player, there is still very much a stigma of being a professional gambler. You also probably haven't experienced some really oppressive downswings where you don't make any money for months on end, and these are where you really get tested in whether or not you have the mental makeup to do this. I'm not trying to deter you, and I'm not trying to encourage you either, I'm just giving it to you fairly straight. I think you need to play many many more hands and do things for a longer period of time to even start thinking about making this your living

First and foremost, do you guys not read what I type? I said I'm going to get my degree, which will be at least 4 more years. I mean, I'm not some rash idiot that's saying "Hey, I want to be a pro poker player. This is some easy shit!" I understand all of that and I thought I made it clear.Ok, there isn't really a second thing. It just seems like you guys are making me sound like I think this is all really easy and I'm going to be some jet-setting millionare in a year. I really want to make it clear again that I don't think any of that at all. I know there's a good chance my intentions can change by the time I'm a senior. But, Keith, thank you for giving me a straight answer. I wanted to hear from someone that's been through it more than anything else.

Dude follow your dream. You have a good solid plan. Heck you have three years before you can even play in a casino. Finnish your degree, build your bankroll and go for it. If it doesn't work out at least you can say that you tried and you will still be plenty young enough to become a teacher or whatever. You are young and have the entire world at your feet. Don't let people tear you down. Live your dream!!!!!!Carpe Diem

Poker sucks ass and I'm tired, that's all for now.
You and I seem to be on opposite swings all the time. I feel like Little Bo Peep and my bankroll are the sheep. Found one last night though.Sidenote: I'd rather feel up Little Bo Peep.
I just kept getting outdrawn on the turn and river constantly yesterday, and couldn't hit any big hands. That's not good when you're playing shorthanded. Oh well at least I wasn't playing my normal limits but it is still frustrating.

Ok, so Dave fixed the wireless router. That means my laptop is back online. I played cards last night at the cardroom and managed to loose a large sum of money. Boo!I was up super late so I'm going back to bed, but after that, I will resume normal posting.NikP.S. The post-op instructions I received for my surgery at the end of the month say I can't have sex for four weeks. That is going to be a problem for me. It also says no bubble baths for me (showers only) for two weeks. My world will be turned upside down!
