I have played limit exclusively online and live (.5/1,1/2) and figured thats the way to learn the ins and outs of txhe. Last night i played in my 1st live nl tourney (only 10 people) and won it. I have read sshe, hoh, many others and used my live poker skills to basically take down that game. I played well and only made one major mistake where I didn't have the best hand(sucked out though) when it was down to two.Are there more fish at the limit or no limit tables?I don't want to waste time and money beating myself and bankroll against better players to learn the game if I can play idiots . I want to play both limit and no limit. Is it a mistake to play only limit? With the popularity of the nl game(FISH) I have to rethink my plan.

Why stick with hold'em (both limit, pot-limit, and no-limit) when you can make much more money if you learn a more complex game like Pot Limit Omaha, 7 card stud 8/b, Omaha 8/b, or Triple draw A-5 or 2-7? In low limits, both online and at B&M casinos, I believe that the luck factor is less of one in these games than in hold'em. While I love playing these games, I don't like playing tournaments or SnG's. If playing a tournament or SnG I love NL because you can pressure people, which you can't do in a limit SnG or tournament. In NL, you don't need the best hand, or to even show down your hand to win. But cash/ring games is very profitatble and more steady than tournaments and SnG's. SnG's are fun to play, but you can make more $ playing ring games.

I've skipped through most of this thread Read it, it's funny.
This thread is alot like Seinfeld. Its a thread about nothing, in which something happens, but it turns out to be about nothing and is unresolvable.By the way, heres my pic of the day:Belittle-Crushed_Gerbil.jpg

"Its a thread about nothing, in which something happens, but it turns out to be about nothing and is unresolvable. "I totally DISAGREE with this response. How ridiculous that I spent 15-20 minutes writing about various forms of poker. And giving their pros and cons. Someone comes along and says that the whole thread is about nothing. What a waste of time and energy. I will repeat this time and time again. 90-95% of the people who play poker are losing players. If you don't find your edge, you will fall victim to those numbers. Good Luck.

"'I want to preface this whole thing by saying that the money is where ever you feel that you have the BIGGEST edge, Whether it be in tournaments, live games, or the internet. There is no quick fix." - steve7stud 100% correct if you are skilled enough already to have an "Edge"My comments are geared to the current majority of poker players which are new players with no to average skill. "Lets talk about no limit hold em for a second. The game is tremendously popular right now. And with all the media telling people that any two cards can win, some players really believe that. There is so much dead money in no limit right now, it's shocking. In the 80's and 90's all of the games dried up. Because the cream rose to the top, and all the bad players went bust. Now EVERYONE wants to play the game. Take advantage of that. I generally will play a 10-20 or 20-40 no limit live games. And there is no maximum buy in. So, obviously there is money in the game. As far as these internet sites, that cap your buy in. I'm sure if you multi-table, or have a TRUE understanding of the game. You can do quite well there." - steve7stud Two words Spill over. Due to the the ratio of NL tables to Limit tables you get the largest slice of that media dollar in limt hold'em games live. When casinos throw tournaments they do this to attract new players to their establishment. These players usually then take a seat in a limit hold'em game. Next time your casino or card club throws a tournament take a look around and see where most of these new players are sitting. there sitting in the largest section avaliable to them the limit hold'em section. Players new to the game with limited preperation and average skills are going to be more profitable in low limit hold'em games live. "Limit hold em and other limit games: stud, stud hi lo, omaha 8, etc. Plenty of money there as well. At the same time, games like stud and omaha will typically have people who know how to play the game. That is due to the lack of popularity. If that is the case, make sure that you are better than "most" or "some" of your opponents." - steve7stud "Limit Hold Em is a game where everyone thinks that they are an expert. You can obviously get away with making more mistakes in a limit game then you can in a no limit game, for obvious reasons. At the same time, there are good limit games and bad limit games. As you move up in limits, you will find that the style of play changes drastically. In a live game, Ace King is much stronger in 100-200 vs. 4-8. You will be up against less people, and often times, Ace high will be the best hand. I don't want to go into too much detail and or analysis here. " - steve7studThat is why new to average players should learn and play this game to make the most out of there newness as well as to build a solid foundation for future games.I guess The OP's question all depends on who you are, whos asking, and who is reading.

You can obviously get away with making more mistakes in a limit game then you can in a no limit game, for obvious reasons. The obvious reasons being that there are so many more opportunites for decision making?I don't think your statement is true at all, frankly and it seems a little ill thought out.You can make *bigger* individual mistakes in NL, but you can also make tons of small mistakes that can be made up for by one mistake by an opponent.

Cool thread. I found bits and pieces of it informative; smasharoo's insights for example, while sometimes vague, are generally sound. As for the original question of this post I think that the REAL MONEY is found in the best game FOR YOU. For instance, you guys all saw what Smash said:If you are a bad player, NL tourniesIf you are slightly less poor, NL cash GamesIf you are a good player, Limit Cash games. This should not discourage ANYONE; everyone starts at the bottom. It is all about progression. I'm sure he would agree with me on that. In order to grow as a poker player, you have to gain experience and work your way up the chain. It would be better if smash said "poor or new player". I'm 19(edit - my b-day is June 27th - i am 20), and I started playing poker after I watched the 2003 WSOP on ESPN... I was fascinated with it. I began playing 25 dollar buy in tournies with close friends. As you can see, that would place me in the first of smash's catagories. After some success at tournaments, I started to play at a local cardshop's cash game (1-2 nlhe 50min/300 max buy-in); I sucked. I was working 3 days a week at my dad's company in Chicago, making 210 per week... would deposit all of it in the cash games. It was a humbling experience. I was playing tournament style poker in a cash game... and was getting killed. After a break and plenty of time to think about my game, I started playing those cash games again(1-2 NLHE, 100min/500 max buy-in). I was recording everything that happened during those games in my journal, and even though I lost/ broke even my first few sessions back... I was learning in the process. Soon enough I was winning. I'd buy-in for the minimum and win a couple hundred. Now, I consider myself to be the best player at that game... which is to say the best player in Plainfield, IL ( :-) ). I usually win about 7-11 hundred on a good night, but 3-4 hund-o is probably my average... considering the nights I lose 2-3 hundred. So... for the sake of the arguement... you can now stick me in Smasharoo's second catagory. My latest issue was BR management - i'm working on that. Now, I have set a goal for myself and I would like to share it: To build my 2k bankroll into a much larger amount for my 21st B-day Vegas trip. For starters, I am going to began with some smaller goals; start playing 5-10 limit online and try to work on my Multi-table tournament game. The 30k guaranteed MTT on PP look mighty nice, and I think I am good enough to finish high in some of those.I guess you can say I now making my transition to Smasharoo's 3rd stage, so to speak.-Steve

The question was, where is the REAL money. As far as Im concerned u wasted your 15-20 mins on nothing. Unless u can answer the orginal question presented in this thread...then nothing has been solved.A schoolgirl can play pros and cons picking at a daisy flower put it doesnt mean she'll find a definite answer. As far as I see, nothing has been resolved. In fact I would wager the OPs question is inanswerable. So u wasted your time pro and conning an unanswerable question. This s a classic Atheist vs. the Church situation.

The obvious reason, not reasons. Is that you can go broke very easily with ONE mistake in a no limit game. I see it happen all the time.

If you read my thread. I said very clearly that money is everywhere. A poker player needs to figure out what his strengths are and utilize them. LOL, why am I bothering with this. Good Luck.

If you read my thread...
Yeah...I didnt read your POST (its a post, not a thread). It would entail me skipping around trying to locate it in this beast-slut of a THREAD.But bear with me here...dealing with this whole thread and question semantically...isnt all money REAL money?
I said very clearly that money is everywhere.
Tell that to all the Luke Skywalkers out there thinking their cards are not cards, but lightsabers...where the money isnt money, but the force. And with the heart of a lion and courage of a wookie they are lightsaber-ing down foos who would dare to use this force (money) for evil ways.(seriously, thats the impression I get from some of these posts).I agree this POST is stupid, except for the lightsaber part -- and if u waste anymore time on me I will probably continue to make myself look retarded. I do that when Im bored. Im totally here for humor aspects only.

I'm sorry you probably lost a lot in NL from being outplayed or something like that but you should respect the game of NLNo, I obliterate NL.It's just boring as hell. Most good limit players laugh about NL.Its like training wheels for the real game.
You're saying that Limit HE isn't boring, while NL is? Please explain as I think that's a total crock.

NLHE is only boring if you are playing properly tight. LHE is only boring if you are playing improperly tight. Im sure you cant see why.

No, you shouldnt point out spelling and grammatical errors of a dyslexic. A condition which, incidentally, has no relation to his poker abilities.

You're sure I can't see why, huh? I can see that you're one of the biggest douchebags on this forum. How's that for seeing things clearly? And I'm sure I'm not the only one who's seen it either. You "experts" make me laugh! What a bunch of freakin' poker snobs you are! "NL is for suckers. It's boring. I only play Limit because I kill all the NL games. I don't have time to sit around waiting for a monster hand."Hey, to each his own. If that's what you like then stick to it. But don't try to make yourself out to be something special when you're no better than anyone else here. And if you're all so damned great at these games, why aren't you pros? Sounds like a bunch of BS to me!
