navybuttons 15
i have a few questions:1) the premise of waterworld is that global warming heats up the polar ice-caps which causes them to melt and then the water level to rise. my guess is that there is 90% more polar ice cap that is under water than is above water. and since ice expands when it feezes, if the polar ice caps melted wouldn't the water level of the world go down?2) how do they have gas in water world?3) if water was to rise so high that it covered the world there would be dry land in a lot of places if there was dry land at all. K2 and everest are of really comparable heights. all the other world's 8Ks (mountains 8K kilometers or more) would also be prominent. the terrain of these mountains is for the most part uninhabitable as they are really steep except for in a few spots. why does water world not address this?4) how come no one in water world has to wear sun-glasses? when people climb tall mountains they have to wear sunglasses because the UV levels that high (altitude) are so incredibly high that even 10 min w/o UV protection can cause sunburn to the cornia. this is called "snow-blindness."i have more questions if anyone is interested. They are to blame.2) They had oil and gas from the huge ships that didn't sink in water. (which was probably most of them)3) Waterworld does address this, but only in the directors cut extended edition. The land that they land on IS Mt. Everest, as they find a plaque at the top that says so. Also there is very little land maybe 100 feet or so above sea level, so K2 might be underwater, but if not, it is never mentioned that dry land couldn't be in more than 1 spot... they only had a map to Everest.4) I think it's called "snow-blindness" because of the reflection of the sun off the snow, and if the land they found was made of mirrors then they probably would have needed to fashion a pair of sunglasses. thanks for your questions. If everest was only 100 feet they would have had decend, what, 28,000 feet or so to the bottom.

This is all complicated by the fact that in the real world, much of the south pole is on land, the north pole over water. Scientists don't know how compression of land from the weight of the ice affects water level, but your question touches on it: if you have the same amount of mass in the world, but some of it converts to a lower-volume form, how could the water level rise worldwide? The only thing that could happen is if the ice was all stacked on land and didn't have any compression side effects, if the ice melted it could make water levels go up. But how much ice would you need under those conditions to even raise sea-levels even a foot?2) It is possible to drill in the ocean, as we do it all the time now. This seems to be a minor technical issue.3) Yeah, what about that?4) I think we'd need a solid answer to the first question to answer this one.
navybuttons 15
Waterworld is awesome,i think so too.1) Scientists. They are to blame.i've read recently that technology is devil's work. waterworld pretty much confirms it.2) They had oil and gas from the huge ships that didn't sink in water. (which was probably most of them)i think this may actually make sense.3) Waterworld does address this, but only in the directors cut extended edition. The land that they land on IS Mt. Everest, as they find a plaque at the top that says so. Also there is very little land maybe 100 feet or so above sea level, so K2 might be underwater, but if not, it is never mentioned that dry land couldn't be in more than 1 spot... they only had a map to Everest.okay.4) I think it's called "snow-blindness" because of the reflection of the sun off the snow, and if the land they found was made of mirrors then they probably would have needed to fashion a pair of sunglasses.it may have something to do with the snow's reflection, but i think predominately its the UV rays at that altitude. of course, i'm mostly speculating on this. thanks for your questions.your welcome. that was fun. now what to do with the rest of my day. there's some grease on the stove i may clean off.
