Reminiscening The Donk Days.

Recommended Posts

In memory of my recent donkage of my whole roll which was about 2 weeks ago I would like for all to share your most memorable donk days, plays, suckouts, etc.... Don't be shy we were all one of them at one point. The thing is though I'm still one of them.My favorite donk moment was during one of the Sunday 100k were I aggro-donked all in on an Ace High flop w/ the Doyle (10-2) dude had Ax but I runner runnered a flush... My worst memory of many donkelicious plays has to be my tilt shove for my whole roll w/ bottom pair running into a set of Kings. Even worse was my tilt shove of my monitor off the desk. Boy do I love being a donkey. Oh and is min-raising for donkeys? just a question.

In theory, yes it is a donkey play, but if you happen to be at a table vs. someone who will view a min-raise as a donkey play then you can use it to your advantage.

I am still a donk but the tourney that sticks out to me happened shortly after I started playing poker. It was when PS first introduced deepstack tourneys and they only had 1 $33 a week. After about 9 hours and making my first cash ever I was getting real tired and real reckless. I just kept raising everyone and going all in on flops if called preflop. Well it worked as everyone kept folding and I ended up chopping it for 5k after about 12 hours.

Mine is easy.. I was 4 tabling, and had an O8B MTT on one of my screens. I played for about 45 minutes, folding mostly with crap cards. Finally I got A23K and went nuts raising every street of a 47K8K board. Opponent flipped over KQQ4 for a boat and i got the "You lost, muck cards?" pop up and I went livid.. I was screaming at the screen about software malfunctions and bs and blah blah blah.. Then i finally looked at the top of the screen, where it said "Limit Omaha blinds 50/100".:icon_doh:I had played almost a full hour of Limit Omaha Hi only thinking I was playing O8B.. This is why I'm 0/1 in my MTT career in Omaha hi.. blarg.

I dont have any memories that stand out as being super donkey but I remember after the first time I played poker with my family when i was just finished grade 10 I went home and tried to devise a preflop strategy for myself. My strategy to "play tight" was to only play pairs and non pairs that added up to 15 or more given that an A is 13, K is 12 etc. regardless of action in front of me and what position I had. Its silly to think of now but this was really the first step of me analyzing my game to a point where I became a decent player.

Not really a donk story but...My very first freeroll tournament was about 3 years ago on Paradise poker. The freerolls were quite popular at the time, so you had to register about 2 hours before the actual event took place if you wanted to play before the seats were filled. So I registered and was obviously very excited for the thing to start. On the first hand I'm in MP and I get dealt TT. Someone raises from early position (5-10xBB) and I smooth call the sucker. Some other donk calls and the three of us see a flop of 10KJ. The first guy moves allin, I autocall, and the guy behind me calls. They flip over and I see I'm in last place.EP raiser has AQ for str8 and late position caller has JJ for an over set, who then goes on to win when another K hits the board...First tournament hand I ever played. I don't know why I thought it would get any better...Obvious fold preflop now:)

I ran what I thought was a pretty good bluff considering we were both deep stacked with around 200 BB's apiece in a 2/3 NL game on Bodog. Guy to my right makes the standard raise to $11 and I re-pop to $33 with 9d10d on the button. He smooth calls and the flop is Ac 3c 7c ... not a fan but I'm not done with the pot yet. He checks and I bet $60 into a $71 pot. He calls and I would normally be done with the hand but another Ace falls on the turn. This time he leads out for $40 and I'm pretty sure he's leading with like 10's or JJ, not with an Ace. I re-pop to $110 and he takes the full time bank amount but finally calls. The river is another 7, making the final board read Ac 3c 7c Ah 7d.He takes a bit of time before checking, and I bet half the pot to make it look like I had AQ or AK this whole time and am now value betting the full house. He takes a lot of time again and calls with ... 5c6c.He smooth called another $22 out of position and then called a little over $200 on a double paired board with a baby flush. At first I thought maybe I played it out like s*** but I realized I pretty much represented an ace properly the entire way. Then I noticed the little player notes icon and double clicked it: Don't bluff. Doesn't fold anything. aeljkfnsdofdsohdsovgfvoushosalojfndsofjvnsoGood job, me.

lol i liked this story reminds me when i was the same age and would play every hand. but we would play a 25 cent ante game and i thought a minraise was so huge considering i had like 10 bucks to play with, those were the days. also i was so n00bed that sometimes when i get board and im the dealer i would shuffle the deck while a hand was in progress. what i hate most is when people deal and they automatically burn the next card in advance before the action was even complete.

PF raise a bit high but that's not bad. Flop/turn bets way too low. Sucks that river sucked out but I think you played it pretty badly too!

Thanks for the tips. My bets after the flop were almost pot sized I thought, they were at the minimum half the pot. How should I have played the hand?

Raise pre-flop to around 80 rather than 120.Bet around 1/2 to 2/3's the pot on the flop.Bet closer to 2/3's the pot on the turn.If he still chases ... well, not much you can do about that.

Raise to 80 PF, then you have the caller (80) + 20 + 20 + 10 = 210 in the pot on the flop. Bet 150 on the flop. If he calls, then that's 510 in the pot on the turn. Bet 325-350. That puts around 1200 in the pot on the river and leaves you close to 1100 behind.

I wish someone else had said that sooner :/I think your bet size on the flop is too large. It will force out smaller pockets and other weaker hands that might call a 1/2 pot bet. I agree with making the turn bet larger once a card comes that brings four to the flush - that's really all you need to be concerned with when it comes to drawing hands so a raise from the villain means there is a good chance you are behind in the hand at this point.

i remember, several years ago, i was hesistant to play a 3 dollar freezeout because of the buy in(too steep!)and then when i finally decided to play, bluffing away all my chips on the 2nd hand with GARBAGE. that was lesson #1. the other bad donk play i made, thinking my top pair was good against a board like 8-9-10-J-6 when the player was making small bets on the flop and so forth.and that was lesson #2
