live straddle and the magic text message

Recommended Posts

So I'm sittin in work around noon today and I remembered my buddy Frank had gone to Foxwoods with his father on his day off. Despite my obvious jealousy I decide to text message him some words of encouragement: GOOD LUCK MAN - STRADDLE FOR ME ON THE NEXT ORBIT. I guess thats the poker equivalent of "HAVE A BEER FOR ME" when you can't make it to a keg party. Anyhow, I didn't hear back from him until 10 minutes ago, more than 5 hours later when he told me the most unlikely, ridiculous live straddle story in the history of 1/2 NL.I just walked in the door from work and my phone rings. It's Frank on the other end stumbling over his words, unable to hide his childlike giddiness. Apparantly Frank got my message 2 hands before he was UTG and decided to take my advice and double the BB, just for kicks. He was hesitant at first since he was already at a maniacal table and straddling was no different than literally lighting four dollars on fire.So Frank ($360 or so) straddles and predictably gets raised by MP 2 to $20, reraised by MP 3 (over 2k in chips) to $50, button cold calls and its folded around to him. He looks down at his cards for the first time and sees the AsAd. He said his stomach literally began to do backflips. He gained his composure after a few seconds and fired $150 into the pot making it another hundred to go. MP 2 folds, MP 3 calls immediately, and after much deliberation the coldcaller folds in disgust, leaving Frank and MP3 to take the flop heads up. Flop was Q 7 3 all hearts.Frank closes his eyes, clenches his teeth and pushes the rest of his stack (about $215) into the middle and to his horror, his opponent beats him into the pot and flips over AhQc for top pair and the nut flush draw. The "ooohs and ahhhhs" come from every corner of the table and the rail. People scurry over to see what the commotion is all about. Turn was the case Ace.River BRICK.Frank drags a $700 + pot.He promised me a 10% cut as soon as he gets home.I feel like a real American hero after that one.

i was playing 3/6, i straddle and look and find 10 10...sweet...gets i think 4 or 5 way action...no re raise 10, q, 3 on the flop, i raise after the BB bets, i get re raised, i was a bit worried about QQ but with no reraise i was feeling safe. turn brought a 2, and it gets capped....river 10!! capped again 3 way....ended up person flopped two pair, one set of 4s and busted flush draw picked up on the turn!!

there are different kinds of straddles, at tunica they use the Mississippi straddle (of course) where anyone person can double the BB, however, anyone after him can steal and make him take his $4 back...all the way to the button, who can steal it from anyone and force the SB to act first preflop....no disadvantage to anyone but the guy who puts in the $4....advantage to everyone after BB because UTG, well isnt utg...the other type is utg goes 2BB, and guy after him can 2x that and so on....the 1.5bb thing is when you miss the blinds and have to post...you can either put 1.5 in the pot with the BB portion as live, and the other .5 dead in the pot, or come in for a 2bb straddle....

Can someone explain if or how a live straddle is different from just posting dead??  I think you have to put a big blind and a half in.  Am I correct??
It is a minnimum raise Under the gun. If the big blind is 4, you make it 8 to go before you even see your cards. People know you are raising with anything, gets people playing back at you hoping to steal your loose raise.

i sometimes sit down at 3-6 tables and play everything in the dark, calling any and all bets and raises. It really amuses me to how upset some people get.
there is a player at the casino that I play at with the nickname no peekie jason. he never looks at his cards and plays everyhandsometimes he plays check/call no peekieand sometimes he plays bet/raise no peekiewhen he plays the second of the two almost every street is cappedhe loves to see the reactions of the players at the end of the hand if he sucked outhe also tips the dealers huge, he once won a nice 3/6 pot and the dealer pushed it to him and he pushed the whole thing back to her as a tipthe amount of money on his table gets to be rediculous because everyone knows that they will get maximum value if they make the nuts

Live straddles are a great way to manipulate your table image. If you want people to believe you are a maniac, just bring out the live straddle and make it known how "crazy" you are.

I had a similar experience with a ive 1/2 NL straddle. Mine didn't work out so well..Same story pretty much, except it goes raise- re-raise - call, call, and I wake up with aces.I raise enough to put everyone who chooses to play all-in.One caller. Shows K-J offFlop: K-K-5Turn and Riv brick off and I loseOh well"Frickin' donkey stuffs all his money in with King -Jack...."

"Frickin' donkey stuffs all his money in with King -Jack...."
And who busted out of the Gold Rush WPT Event by pushing with KJ during the first season of the WPT when Antonio "1.4" Esfandiari looked him up with KQ...that's the one Paul Darden won, if you'll recall. Seems to me some donk busted trying to make a move with KJ there. Weird.

I'm a full time grinder at my local B&M 1/2 100 max who loves the stradlewhen the cards aren't coming. After 5 hours and every hand was pretty much as good as j 4 off, I was down to $38 at a super loose table. I figured it was the way the cards were coming for the day even after what seemed like 20 seat changes and 4 table changes. All the tables were so loose, my super tight style wasn't going to work this dayFrustrated with all the junk, and crappy results, I stradle for 38.7 callers- yes callers.when it was all said and done, my 2 3 off, held up for 2 pairs, and I got the f out of dodge. It's a fun way to end your day whether you win or lose.Good luck.
