how much do you tip?

Recommended Posts

it's not just a "few hours of work"  and if they get 28 an hour for dealing the wpt, that's horrid. most tourney downs (half hour) for smaller tourneys get 10-20, and dealing a WPT is MUCH higher stress than dealing a ho-hum $60
I would deal for a WPT event free of charge....Just saying.
You'd work 4 10 hour shifts for nothing?Have you ever dealt before?

I wouldnt deal 4 consequtive shifts. But i'd love to deal a shift at a table with name pro's, if only for the experience. The point isnt that they should be paid less or more, or whatever. It's that if they don't think their wage is enough to justify the effort they're putting in, they should find another job; not complain that others aren't giving them enough charity. And that is what a gratuity is.Im sure it isn't all fun and games. But there are millions of others out there who do jobs that're much worse, who get paid much less. People who are much more in need of your charity.

If I won 3/4 of a mil, I would probably tip somewhere around $10 grand, if they would promise me that the money would be split among all dealers based on their hours of work during the tournament.EStormOk

If you owned your own business, would you expect people to work for you for free?Tip your dealers. It is the right thing to do. And if you can't think of s selfless reason to tip, I will give you a selfish reason to do so. Chicks hate cheapskates.

damn...tips are charity now.explain that to the guy that serves you your meal tonight at applebees. tell him that you're giving to the red cross for katrina relief, because they're more in need of the money than he is.i'm sure he appreciates it while making 2.50 an hour.

Poker is one thing ....but in the casino, a multi billion dollar buisness they get away with paying dealers almost minimum wage because of the tips from the players. That does not sit well with me, They are responsible for all of the casinos money, yet they are only worth minimum wage. Maybe if people tipped less in some cases the casinos would have to pay there dealers better... its not like the casino doesnt need them.

yet another brilliant idea.let's go with 20% rakes up to $20 on poker tables.casinos hardly make jack shit in poker, compared to the 6 slot machines that could fill the space that one poker table does.tip your dealers if they're good, don't tip if they're bad. tip after a tourney, even if a portion comes out of the prize pool.

I hear what you are saying, and it is never going to happen so dont worry, but in the general casino where billions are made I think the dealers should be paid for the reponsibility they are being given.

Uhh, ok. "Gratuity" and "donation" are synonyms - value judgements aside. I dont see why it should be some shock that im comparing the two.If you want to believe that you make the tips that you do because you're some benevolent, masterfully ethical person and not because you happen to be subject to a culture that encourages it, be my guest.I tip when i eat out so i wont look like a prick, and that's about it. I dont care about those people any more than i care about someone else working under comparably poor conditions for identical wages. I care about them both to a degree. But if you find yourself conveniently picking to offer your 'gratuities' to those who will alleviate your social anxiety time after time, there's a good chance that your primary motive isnt an ethical one.

I think the reason why most people tip is because it is the social norm, not because they feel they got some amazing service. You go to other places around the world and you'll get much better service and they won't even accept tips if you offer it to them.As a poker player, profit is pretty much your only motive. Theoretically, it just doesn't make sense to cut into your profits by tipping out of your pocket. Personally, I don't like tipping and I pretty much only do it to not look like an ass.Not sure if everyone knows this, but dealers also make a ton of money at the private card clubs. I'm not sure how much they get paid at a casino, but I know of people who make 500-1000 dollars a night dealing cards at an underground card club. That's rediculous money just for dealing cards, but a lot of that money made is shady. I know dealers that will steal from the pot, rake too much from the pot and etc.

Tipping after a WPT is basically mandatory. To give you an example: in the WPT where DN, Grinder, Chau, Scotty Ngyuen played, the winner, the student from Wisconsin ,ONLY gave 5,000 from his winnings. He was ripped publicly by all the pros, on poker pages, and on television. He made the same arguments that everyone is saying here: they already take a piece for the house, etc.... and he was flat out called a punk by all. He wrote some letter to pokerpages to defend himself and they ridiculed him even more. Chau, who took second, tipped 25,000. There was a huge debate on 2+2 and the concensus was you don't have to tip, but if you do, tip alot.

Actually he gave $500 as a tip, but regardless he did get chewed up pretty good by the poker media.

I am a dealer in Las Vegas and I'd like to make a few points, but note I'm a 21 dealer so bear with me.For those who don't want to tip a dealer don't, but when you aren't paying attention and give a hit signal on your hard 18 don't be upset when you get a card instead of a "you have 18" When you ask for a good restaurant don't be upset when the dealer says "McDonalds" and don't be angry when you lose all your money and the dealer says "BYE" instead of "better luck next time". Oh yea, and don't ask the dealer to hurry the cocktail waitress up, cuz it ain't in my job description. As far as poker tournaments go the house does take a rake off the top and it varies how much of that goes to dealers, generally the bigger the buy in the smaller the % of the rake. All dealers that put time in on the table during the tourny split the dealer pool of rake and tips proportional to hours worked. You don't want to tip then don't, but don't cry when casinos eliminate tournaments because they aren't worth it and they can't get dealers to come in and deal it. Cash games, don't tip if you don't want to, but don't cry when dealers keep making mistakes because now they make $9 an hour flat instead of $6 plus tips(i'm talking about those of you who get mad because someone making $5 and hour screwed up their drive thru order) and eat it when the house now rakes $4 a pot instead of $3. Those of you who make comments like I have read have very little clue what you are talking about as is normal of people with those types of attitudes. Generally they think they deserve everything and should put forth nothing. Don't tip if you don't want to, but when it has a negative impact on everything from service to availability of tournaments.........DON'T CRY!!!!!PS-As we type casinos are trying to figure out how to get you all to play at a big video table where there is no dealer or real physical chips, but poker players won't go for it.

if you don't tip when you lose, why do you tip when you win?better yet, if you don't tip when you get 2nd, why do you tip if you get 1st?2nd prize winner experiences the same amount of service from the dealers as 1st prize winner. seems like an unfair burden that the amount the dealers get screwed depends on the winner.

if the individual dealer who is doing a good job gets tipped the same amount as some dipshit who botches every hand, that eliminates the incentive for doing a better job. therefore, if our tips have no effect on the performance of the dealers, what's the point of tipping? to be a nice guy? psh.btw, i heard raymer tipped a bundle in 2004. i also heard the dealers got worse in 2005. what happened there, bud?

What happened there is that the WSOP got 4X bigger and there are only so many good dealers to go around at this point in time so there were actually true break ins (first time dealers) working in '05. As far as dealers who botch every hand, they won't get called to work the next tournament......unless he is all that is available cuz there is no real money in dealing.Raymer tipped 50K and that was strong. Again, the bigger the numbers get the smaller the % required to make people happy. Also, 2nd should tip also, but not as much as first. All players that make a profit should tip some, but the amount of profit will dictate that. If you limp into the money in a 10k event and get 12.5 back and tip $100 thats fine. If you win 750,000 and stiff everyone, thats your business, but if the entire poker world rips you in forums, you may want to consider you aren't right in this instance.

1) do all the players who profit actually tip?2) that still doesn't refute my point in that the tip structure is not conducive to producing better dealers. if a mediocre dealer gets payed the same amount in tip as a great dealer, then there's no incentive for that mediocre dealer to be better.

So basically as a dealer your asking for and expecting a handout for doing your job? Are you also implying that you will stiff a customer if he doesn't tip you accordingly to what you expect? You can choose to not do your job well, that's your choice. So, go ahead and recommend McDees as a good restaurant and say BYE instead of Good luck Next Time. Just don't be surprised when you get complaints and get canned by management. The customer is always right especially in a service industry like the casino.I wouldn't cry if casinos stopped hosting tournaments. I feel they're already taking too much in the first place and not giving back anything to the players. The casinos charge an entry fee that is supposed to pay the dealers as well. It's not my job as a poker player to tip you and feed your family, if it doesn't pay enough, go find another job. However, if I feel the need to tip for a good experience, I will, but it shouldn't be expected when the rules clearly state that a tip is not needed. To say hosting a tournament for a casino is not worth it is plain retarded. Even if casinos don't make a huge killing off the entry fee, do they not get great publicity for their casino? Do the players who play in the tournament not play the other casino games while they're there?

What many players fail to recognize is that dealers are in the business of dealing poker primarily because tipping, whatever the amount may be is customary. Tipping accounts for more than 90% of their income, and tipping something when you win a pot or a tournament, is the norm. If you choose to tip, great, the dealers and staff appreciate it, and inturn generally try to accomodate you in any way possible. I can verify that players that are "known tippers" in the poker room I routinely visit find that they are taken care of (i.e. comps, room rates, holding seats for a player, being dealt in when they step away from the table for a moment, etc.)As an added incentive, many players who happen to befriend the dealers, can go them between tables and ask for a scouting report. They could find out what table the "live ones" are at, which tables to avoid, and so forth. If you choose not to tip, fine. That is also your right. However, you should be aware of a number of factors associated with not tipping.A) Regarding tournaments, the portion of each player's tournament buy-in that is withheld does not all go to dealers. Quite the contrary. It is actually split many ways between the tournament director, floor supervisors and staff, dealers and the casino. Who gets the biggest cut? You guessed it, the casino.B) If and when you tip at the final table, that money is also being split. Sometimes between dealers, often times between the dealers and staff...the dealer who dealt the the hand to the 1st place winner doesn't get to keep the 3% tip or whatever the winner(s) leaves for himself.C) It has often been said that players are increasingly upset with how much money is taken out the prize pool of tournament buy-ins. This is due in part to the large increase in tournament fields, (more players = more dealers and staff that need to be paid) and in part the winners not tipping in the end. By choosing not tip if you finish in the money or especially if you win a tournament, you are incouraging the staff to take more money up front for them and their staff. That is negative expecation for you.D) Stiffs are generally hated just about every circle of poker. Dealers the most. Don't expect any breaks to be cut your way by them or the floor. Most floor supervisers and Poker room managers started out with as dealers so they most likely despise stiffs as well. When in a game, You may even get asked, reminded or called out by some other players who see you failing to tip the dealer. Many dealers are players. Not to mention, if there are any women in your game, you will making yourself look like quite the cheapskate by not tipping anything at all. Is all that grief worth not throwing the dealer a measly dollar when you win a pot?E) If you win a major tourney and fail to tip, word will spread and you will get flamed (in Joe Hachem's case, numerous times). Finally DN, on top of being a genuinely nice guy, is widely known for being a superb tipper who treats dealers quite well. Who better than him to set the example. If none of these are reasons enough to tip, you can always stick to playing online.

Gratuity isn't "charity" you tip nazi. Charity? I don't even know how to react to that. I know, I will add I strongly dislike Abbaddabba to my signature.

To the BJ Dealer:Let me first start off by saying I"m a tipper. However, I tip, not to get good service, but rather, when someone serves me well, and I think they deserve a gratuity. A Thank You.Tipping should not buy me good service. I should get good service, because that's your job. And if I feel the need to tip you because I"m a nice guy, I will.If I'm in a resturaunt, Isn't it the job or the wait staff, to give the best service possible. The best food, timely, and anything you would expect from a resturaunt. That's why am paying 10-30 bucks a plate. And then, as a thank you, I will give a gratuity, a perecntage usually based on the quality of service. But if I'm down on my luck, or strapped for cash, or any other multitude or reasons, why should I be forced to BUY good service with my gratuity. The dealer doesn't give me a toke when I loose a big hand, but he makes a big tip."I'm sorry you just lost $100 on that hand. Well here, have your 10 bucks you tipped me earlier."Yeah, that would never happen.

elaear - You're missing the point. Sure they split the tip evenly b/w all dealers. The tip is what is conducive to getting good dealers. You're naturally going to have better dealers if the job of being a dealer is more lucrative. If dealers make little money, then it's going to be hard for a casino to hire competent dealers. If dealers make good money, then casino's can hire good dealers and easily fire the bad ones.Hey, you don't have to tip. It is your choice, but the fact remains that it is other's choice to think you are a jerk. My mother was a waitress when I was a kid and a single mom. She was a great waitress and customers tipped her well. Thank goodness, because she was only being paid $2 an hour. Now she was always good to the customer, whether they tipped or not. An earlier poster said the customer is always right. That's true, and mom lived by that. Now, if mom came home and told me this story, how should I think. "Son, I thought I was going to have a good day because a big party of 20 came in and I served their tables. They were there about 2 hours and I served them all their meals in a timely manner and refreshed their drinks. Well, I was hoping on a decent tip, being it was a big group, but they didn't leave me anything! Not only that, the man that paid the bill came up and told me'Look, if you want to know why I didn't tip you, it's because I don't tip just because society says I have to. Why should you get a tip when people at McDonalds don't get a tip or even the cashiers at Walmart for ringing up my purchases'"Now, how should I react to that. "He's right mom, if you wanted to make more than $4 for two hours work you should get off your lazy ass and get a better job. Man, I wish there were more decent and enlightened people like that guy in the world"
