what if???(2003 wsop)

Recommended Posts

So i'm bored as hell in my calc class today and got to thinking about poker and for some reason the 2003 wsop......Thinking back to the hand where Lester's JJ hit on Hellmuth's QQ on the river crippling Hellmuth..... if that J doesn't hit.... Hellmuth would have been 3rd in chips I believe.....Picture how different the poker landscape would be today had that J not hit..... Hellmuth probably has bracelet number 10.... another main event title..... and wouldn't be quite the laughing stock he is today.

And what if Moneymaker doesn't hit an A on the river against Phil Ivey to make a full house. And what if Dutch Boyd doesn't hit the case 4 on the river against a higher set. And what if Moneymaker never won a satellite online. And what if Farha doesn't fold to Moneymaker's bluff. And what if Tomer Benvenisti lost some weight... you just never know...

I for one think Hellmuth is a far cry from a laughing stock. His people- and handreading abilities are very disconcerting. And he almost always gets his money into vital pots with the best hand. Some TV coverage and internet rumors not withstanding, that is not a man I would want to play for significant money.

I think the point is - what if Moneymaker hadn't won. With that said - yes it would be different. More than half the people on this site probably wouldn't be playing the game it just wouldn't be cool.More than half of the winning players on this site probably wouldn't be winning, lack of dead money. The game would still be hard to find in casinos and those of us who had to lobby for players in the years ago would still have the same issues getting players into a game. While there have come more annooying things with the popularity than good, its nice to have thousands of young inexperienced players running all over the cardrooms and sites giving away their moeny these days.

Yeah, I was thinking along those same lines; If MM didn't win, how popular would online poker, and poker in general, be today. The hole card cams were already around though, and the WPT was just around the corner. Even if a pro wins the '03 event, I still think poker would have gained popularity around that time, but not nearly to the extent it has now.Patrick

basically, the only relevant thing from this thread is...Hellmuth is REALLY REALLY GOOD at NL tourney holdem. seriously, when was the last time anyone has ever seen him be eliminated in a tournament by getting his money in with the worst of it?? His line "if it weren't for luck, I guess I would win every one" is pretty ridiculous, BUT, if it weren't for some pretty bad luck over the past few years, he probably would have quite a few more major titles. That is poker though.
