i'm moving to vegas this saturday!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, My first-ever trip to Vegas began about 16 days ago. I stayed for 10 days, and at the end of my stay, I didn't want to leave! I bet this is probably a pretty common scenario. I loved how there was something to do every hour of the day. I loved how there was poker almost everywhere. I loved how it was so easy to meet people. So now, after having made the final decision to move to Vegas, I'd like to make some friends. I know absolutely noone in Vegas, and I will be moving by myself. I'm a little scared, but mostly excited. It's a cool feeling, actually. I will be playing poker a lot when I get there. I've been playing for about 5 years, and I'm not that bad. I'd also like to see if I can get a job as a poker dealer there. This is all very new to me, and I hope I succeed, but there's a possibility that I might fail. Either way, though, it feels damn good to chase a dream. I'm making this post because I would like to make friends, either male or female. I'm really just looking to know some people I can hang out with once in a while. I'm 28 years old. I am a student here in Houston, but I can't take my next class until January. A few months ago, I discovered that I really didn't enjoy my studies in radiography. Depending on how well this move to Vegas goes, I might or might not continue my studies. I haven't worked out in a few years, but I'd like to find a place to work out in Vegas. Is there a 24 Hour Fitness there?I've found a few rooms for rent (either in homes or in apartments). A few of them are east of the strip, which I've been told is in general a bad area. I will likely settle on the first room that I see that is clean and cheap. As I will be spending most of my time playing poker, I anticipate staying in the room only to sleep and shower.I will not bring my desktop there because I want to be able to travel as light as possible. While I am there, at least initially, I want all my things in one big luggage so that I have the ability to be nomad-like. Does anyone know where I can use the internet for free there in Vegas? Are there internet cafes? Libraries?Anyone know how I could get a job as a poker dealer? I have experience dealing at social clubs in Houston, and am generally regarded as a pretty good dealer.Anyone know where I can get cheap food? I know that the few places I played at, the poker room gave $4 off coupons at their casino restaurants. I might do this for two meals a day, and then just eat at home for the 3rd meal.Anyone know where the best places to play are, as far as where most tourists go to play? What time of day is best?I will be carless, at least initially, so all my traveling will be done by bus.I enjoy a variety of things other than poker like movies, chess, working out, going out for drinks, the occasional strip club, shopping, and I still haven't seen any of the shows Vegas has to offer like David Copperfield and all the Cirque du Soleil shows. This is not a post for me to hook up with a girl -- although I'm not opposed to the idea of meeting a hot girl who plays poker, of course.I'm just a genuine guy who'd like to make some new friends in Vegas. This will be a completely new city for me, and it would be nice to have some friends for support, fun, hanging out, etc as I make my transition in Vegas. If anyone here lives in Vegas or knows some nice people in Vegas who would like to make a new friend, please write me back.Oh, by the way, I just bought my plane ticket. I'll arrive in Vegas this coming Saturday, July 23 at 8:30 AM.OK, I wanted to put some pics of me here, but I don't know how. If someone knows how, and wants to help me, I'd appreciate it.Thanks,Tim

I lived in Vegas for awhile, so i can offer a few tidbits:Vegas is a car-friendly place. Those not in the know may think it is easy to get around, but the bus system is adequate at best. I wouldn't want to be waiting for a bus in the current weather, either. I'm not trying to be negative, just a thought.Rooms - The first day I got to Vegas I went straight to a Budget Suites (there are about 6 or 7 of them around). Each "suite" has a kitchen, full bath, and a seperate bedroom. They are usually pretty clean and I had nothing but a good experience for fair money (200 a week or so). I recommend the one behind the Stardust.Free Internet - Libraries are great for internet in Vegas. You get an hour or so limit. But the libraries are fairly far off the strip, so plan accordingly. 24 Hour Fitness - EVERYWHERE. Again, off the strip, but I remember one only a mile or two off the strip on West Tropicana.Dealing - The casinos are pretty crazy about their dealers having gone to school, especially with the poker boom. Schools will also give job placement services. No matter what you will ned up dealing the midnight shift at a smaller, off-strip casino for awhile. Some casinos don;t go with the school thing, but they do make you "audition" by dealing a game to some of their dealers. You'll also need a Sheriff's Card for gaming, which I discussed in another thread.Strip Clubs - Remember the Budget Suites behind the Stardust? They are walking distance from it on Industrial.I'll let the rest of the folks hit you with their casino picks. PM me if you have any other questions.Good Luck!

Yeah good luck. There are internet cafes downtown. Go to Bellagio and the Wynn for tourists. Hopefully you meet people fast, because it is a lonley town. Its loads of fun and very profitable pokerwise, but I'm just warning you that you might start to feel icky after a long time in that enviroment. Its a real weird scene to get used to if you grew up in middle America, but if you can handle it you should do well. The games are great, especially 15-30 @ Bellagio.
