Recommended Posts

I just took this online poker quiz and I disagreed (maybe more like would consider proceeding differently) with a few answers.Tom McEvoy's 20 Questionshttp://www.pokerpages.com/interactive/quiz.../mcevoy03a.php3Questions 10, 15, 16 and 17. How would anyone else answer?

I answered question 10 right, however also got numbers 15,16, and 17 wrong. I completely disagree with his answers on those questions as well.

For 20, is checking really the right option?I mean, equity.  Right?  Equity?
Yeah I didn't care for that answer either.... I posted a thread previously about this very issue when I checked AA in the BB to seven limpers. I thought I was hiding the strength of my hand, but since became convinced that raising was correct even in that situation since I had the best hand. I will post my disagreement shortly.

I got 16 out of 20I called #2I folded #6I called #17I raised #20
I also got 16 out of 20. I called #9I raised #15I called #17I raised #20I'm somewhat baffled by #17. In middle position in a limit game with no raise in front of me, I'm probably going to call with a pair of 5s and at least try to flop a set there.

#10 - pocket 2s in the SB - Why not three bet and flush out the limpers. If it goes fold, fold, fold, call and you bet the flop no matter what, you will often win this. Mcevoy says call.#15 - Pocket 10s mid pos w/ two limpers - I say raise to take control of the pot. He says to call. He claims you will need help to win anyway. I guess that is a decent way to play, but I think I would raise.#16 - A-q on button w/ 5 limpers - You probably have the best hand, unless someone has a small pair, which you can probably drive out with any overs. I'd raise. Mcevoy says to call, which I really hate. I would raise or fold.#17 - Pocket 5s in mid position to one limper - Mcevoy says to fold. I would raise or call. Raise preferably to put pressure on those behind you. If they call, proceed carefully, if they fold you have position....i didn't like #2 either. Fold AKs pre-flop? The raise and re-raise aren't near as scary as the cold call three bets. If you are gonna play here, you gotta cap or get out.

Most of these questions are easy, but I'm not sure about #2, #9, #15, #16, and #20.#2 - I would only fold this if the opponents are extremely tight.#9 - I usually open-raise UTG with AJo in 1/2 online games unless there are several aggressive opponents, in which case I fold.#10 is an easy call - assuming that the limpers will call, you're getting 11-1 to call, and you're 7-1 to flop the set with good implied odds. You don't want to raise, because you want the limpers to call and you don't want to reduce your implied odds by investing too much preflop.#15 - I usually raise here, but I understand the case for limping; limping might be the better play actually with loose players behind - a raise will likely make this a 3- or 4-way pot, which is about the worst case for tens, so perhaps limping to let more people in and hoping for a set is better.#16 - I usually raise here, unless the limpers are mostly solid players, in which case limping is arguably better.#17 is an easy fold IMO. It's a small pocket pair in middle position with only one limper. For those who frequently call in this spot with small pairs in limit HE, you should stop - it's a leak. And there are too many opponents left to act to attempt an isolation raise, IMO.#20 - I see what he's saying about checking, but I'm not sure the the deception gained by checking outweighs the fact that you have tons of equity with this hand. I think I raise here every time.

#10, you're really looking to flop a set, not narrow the field. In the unlikely event you hit you want to get tehm all to pay. #15, depends on table texture, if you are in the usual PP crazy MTT, raise it up. If you are in the WSOP rock garden with Action Dan, early calls ARE a sign of strenght. #16, same as 15. Its a drawing hand, so draw. #17, again texture. I would limp with even 4's from mid, but its tough to call a raise unless you know the raiser is full of it.

Regarding question number 2. I read the question as such: A rock under the gun raises (first warning bell). A solid player to act next re-raises (maybe just an isolation bet but nevertheless his hand will almost always beat ace high) and more troubling of all the action so far is a "solid" player cold calling! If I saw all the action unfold without even looking at my hand I would be thinking "I have to have aces to play here." As I have learned the hard way many a time especially in Limit Hold 'em: A-K is the best DRAWING hand possible. I don't want to put my money in the situation the McEvoy describe when I know the betting will be capped, I will most likely only be getting 3-1 on my money and will basically have to flop or turn a flush to feel good about my hand. I'll fold and wait for the next hand. BTW, 19/20...I understand why you "shouldn't" raise with Q's in the big blind, but I hate the idea of a naked ace seeing the flop cheaply to kill my hand.

i dont consider myself a good limit player...i got 17 out of 20 right. The only ones i got wrong were #20, #9 and #1. They say disguising your hand is a good play for #20, but i prefer to do it for #1 when i have position with an almost equal hand (JJ/QQ).
