Kind of like football or baseball. The main reason for conferences is to reduce travel which saves money and wear and tear on the players. That isn't as important today since all teams fly on their own chartered planes so travel is a lot more comfortable. It also keeps more games for teams in their home time zone which is better for local TV ratings. The reason that football and baseball are the way they are is that those leagues are the result of mergers between competing leauges in the past. Link to post Share on other sites
