BigDMcGee 3,352
No matter how you wash it out, the election of Obama was a confluence of idealism and anger, disgust and hope, that simply will not resolve itself as cleanly as many Obama proponents hope it will. The man is not a savior. The man is not a god. The man may be inspiring, the man may give great speeches, the man may know precisely what chords to strike that will resonate loudest with the largest number of people but at the end of the day, tomorrow in America, things will still be exactly the same as they were yesterday. There is only so much a president can do, even when he has a complicit congress and house. In the years to come, every "idealist" in Grant Park making a spectacle of themselves are about to learn a stern lesson as far as what a president realistically can and cannot do.Sadly, so many people voted for Obama on the premise of a "hope" that is just not realistic, but such is the nature of "hope". Since the beginning of time, it's been democracies opiate, used to control the masses just long enough to get your foot in the door .This is 100 percent true, and whyI don't get fired up about politics anymore. Because I think the amount passionate GOP or DEM partisans get passionate about their candidate ( and the failings of the other candidate) is inversely proportional to how much effect who the president actually has on their lives. At the end of the day, individuals are responsible for their own lives and how their lives turn out. We have a fantastic country, that facilitates the ability of an individual to make something with and do something with their life. But what the flavor is of the man at the top has very little to do with that facilitation. I imagine 1 year from now, almost everyone in this forum's life will be extremely similar to what it is now, and if it isn't, it will much more likely to be because of that person's own actions not the president's. Untilted 158
Congratulations to Barack Obama. Part of me tells me he will unite America. Part of me looks to his liberal record and that gives me pause. I also believe he is sincere in his desire to be president to all people not just the ones who voted for him. The history tonight is unmistakable. No matter who you voted for or whether you support his policies and positions, the fact that America was able to elect an African American as president can only be positive in itself. James D 0
He's so well spoken, it's just remarkable, you know.. how.. just.. well spoken, he is!Magnified x100 when compared to the last guy.But yeah, he just sounds presidential... it's like a powerful quaver or whatever its called, in his voice. I don't know if that's how it's described.. I should be in bed. But, very much akin to MLK really.. there's a slight tremble there which makes it more powerful. 'I have a dreeeam today.' with empahsis on the I and dream, you know.
BigDMcGee 3,352
Magnified x100 when compared to the last guy.the subtlty of what I said may have been lost on you, J, since you're a brit.. I'll explain the subtext..When someone in america says " Boy, that guy sure was well spoken" 99% of the time, what he really is saying is " OMG, I can't believe that Nigger doesn't talk like Flava Flav" Well spoken is generally used in a condescendingly racialist way ( though the user will both deny the condecendion and the racism when they use it). But I wouldn't care about him dying more than I would someone else who I don't really know.

The Lobster 0
So was it totally necessary for the crowd at McCain's party to boo when McCain said he called to congratulate Obama and said a nice thing or two about him?

If Obama would have lost, there would have been race riots, which, strictly speaking, wouldn't have been totally necessary.

People throw that word around far too lightly.
rcgs59 15
I heard his other speeches but tonight, he spoke with a differenceHe sounded like a president. I loved the story about the 106 yr. old lady, his forsight for the future and how to get there with help. His call out to his non believers. Awesome speech, it makes you want to help out and work with him. I just hope and pray some nut case does not go after him like JFK, and Martin Luther King. He will serve all americans well.and to the people who refer to him as black remember he is half white as well.

That's a word that means different things to different people.I have no problem with Ironic use of the word fascist to describe obama. I'm talking, you know, about the more literal kind El Guapo is espousing. If I thought Obama was as bad as El Guapo claims him to be, I would snort an 8-ball and rape a hooker to celebrate his assassination.
