Poker In Sandiego

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking of moving back to LA so that I have live poker nearby just incase online poker dies down a bit, the social life in LA is cool too...However, I talked to a guy at my cash table online the other night and he told me Sandiego had tons of poker rooms with a bunch of big NL games going and a ton of donks, I just wanted to know from anyone that lives in SD or anyone that has played in the cardrooms there if this was true. Maybe some facts about the poker scene there like how many 10/20 nl games are going on random weekdays, and on weekends, what the juciest games are, how many pokerrooms there are, etc etc....Anyway, Sandiego is an awesome place and I think I might like it more than LA (I like LA a lot), and I'd like to do a ton of research before I actually decide on what to do...thanks for the help

sorry, i know nothing about SD poker but...why not vegas?
vegas poker sucks, I think its great for online players because you can live there cheap and u can play live when there are tourneys...but if u go on a standard weekday, the games are horrible.

First of all San Diego is not one word. As far as 10-20 nl you're going to have a tough time finding a game that big. The only place you will find a nl game that big is at the Palomar Room in Mission Valley. Ocean's Eleven gets big games sometimes on the weekends but that is just as far from Orange County as it is from SD. All the Indian Casinos Sycuan, Barona, Viejas have pretty small games, but you could find a 10-20 game occasionally. There's Pechanga and Harrah's but I'm not sure about their spread. I would advise you to go to LA if you're going strictly for poker.

I've played the biggest NL game at pechanga and unfortunately the biggest they have is 5/10,but its pretty juicy. The poker room there is 2nd to none, they run monthly 215 tournaments that give away a seat to the series and usually have a couple tournaments a month over 100 buy in. I haven't played at Harrah's but am going down there on Feb. 11th for a WSOP circuit event, I will let you know what the biggest games they spread there are.

As someone already mentioned, 10/20NL is not that common except at the Palomar Club, the game runs infrequently but when it does it gets huge and the wealthy fish that play in it are worth the wait. Middle limit NL games are more frequent in the San Diego area, at Oceans, Pechanga, and Viejas, and Barona (which runs a bigger NL game when it gets people that want to play). Sycuan used to have a great 500 min/no cap buy-in game that has dried and up and had the players move to the Palomar Club, the Lucky Lady (which has an excellent 5/10 game), or other various card rooms around San Diego. For the most part what you are going to get are the typical 2/5, 500 max games. The trade-off is that you are living in San Diego where it's a great laid back lifestyle and just more appealing/relaxing to me than living in LA would be (I've lived here as well). The biggest game that goes is 75/150 LHE at Oceans 11, and they are always running 20/40 and 40/80 LHE. I don't think they run bigger NL games because they are worried all the fish will go broke too quick. Anyways, if you need anymore info PM me.

Ever think of the Bay Area? If so, might want to read this trip report from 2+2.Biggest game is at Lucky Chances 10/10/20 blinds, with a 40 bring-in. $2,000 min buy-in, no max:DJ Sensei takes on Lucky Chances. (trip report, way long)
LMAO....that DJ Sensei guy is funnier than a rubber crutch!! Seems like the deck hits him upside the head a lot but can't argue with the results. Thanks for the link.

Sup J C? San Diego is awesome but L A is best for poker imo.Good news is that S D is very close and if you know there are good games going it's not that far to get to them.

There usually aren't any games above 2/5NL in most San Diego card rooms except for Lucky Lady and Palomar Card Room. One thing you should know is that both those places are in the ghetto and both only have about 10 tables total (with 1 or 2 of them being Pai-gow tables). I'm pretty sure the big games 5/10NL and 10/20NL are mostly the same crowd always playing although I've only played in that game a couple times. If you're going to try to make a living here, it can be done since there are a lot of fish that have been playing lately. It seems like in the last 6-12 months a lot of the regulars at most of the SD casinos have gone away and more fish have come in. I've noticed this in the 1/3NL and 2/5NL games anyway, since that's my specialty. As far as variety though, there's about 10 casinos in the area:East CountyBarona (haven't played there lately so I don't know what they have going)Viejas (1/3NL is usually biggest game sometimes if it's busy they have 2/5NL or 5/10NL)Sycuan (same as Viejas pretty much, except the 2/5NL is usually running)Lucky Lady (see above)Palomar Room (see above)North County (Sorry I never go to these so I'm not the expert on their game selection)PechangaOcean's 11Harrah's + a couple more I can't think ofHope this helps

Hey SoCal did you make it out to Harrah's yet? I want to try to make it out there tomorrow or Sunday for one of the ME mega sat's.
Nope. I golfed 18 at La Costa today instead. I may try to make it out and sat into the ME... depend's on scheduling. You really have to come play up in NC for the juicy games/deep stacked NL.

How so? I'm sure you know better than me but intuitively one would think vegas has the most action.

I just moved to San Diego for a job and there is a healthy small no limit holdem community here. The big game at Palomar doesn't seem to last long and it always looks like the same players. I have watched it while waiting for a game and it didn't look too crazy or unbeatable. Also, the Village Club has a 10/20 game every once in a while but I have never watched that but again it is in a sketchy neighborhood. I just don't have the courage to show up in the ghetto with 2k so I have never tried them. Also, one major problem with San Diego is the lack of variety in the games. This may not be a problem for you but in San Diego it is almost 100% no limit holdem. Oceans 11, Veijas, and The Village Club run Omaha H/L but never higher than 8/16. I would say that LA would be your best bet or possibly right between LA and San Diego. Oceans 11 has a lot of high limit holdem games, biggest at 75/150, but for variety and stakes, the closer to LA the better. Also, the play closer to LA seems easier than in San Diego, just my opinion. We have awesome weather though... but poker wise... LA is a much better choice.

i just saw the "vegas has more action" question and I would say that LA will give vegas a run for its money on action although in LA you dont get the tourists.

i don't think that this is the case. intuitively yes, but in practice no. l.a. is the poker capital of the world by a pretty long shot. vegas probably a bigger stud, BOT, and omaha selection, but there is just a WORLD more action in l.a.j.c., PM for $5 or $10/point chinese poker if you make it out here. :club:
