What Do Players Want?

Recommended Posts

Ok, this is gonna be long and annoying to some, so please skip it if you don't have the time. I know, I know :club: I'm a poker dealer. I just moved my entire life to a small city to help with the opening of a new casino. The room I was working before was nice but hours had been cut back due to tournaments being made illegal in Florida. (they're legal again, I know) In search of a place where I could pad my resume and make some money off a new room, I left. I consider myself a good dealer. I've dealt huge games, big buy-in tourneys, and I rarely make a mistake. I run a smooth game and get out more hands than most. In the past, it seemed that most players wanted a dealer to "dummy up and deal", meaning keep quiet and run the game. This is what I'm used to and now, it seems like I'm paying a price for it. I make less than half what I was making in Florida. Tonight I was following some retard dealer who couldn't read hands, pushed pots to the wrong players, discarded the stub into the muck before even turning over the river card with 6 players left in the pot, the list goes on... He made more than double what I did. Last night I followed a female dealer around (kinda a given, I know) and I watched these dicks tip her $10 per hand and stiff me. Since I've been here I've only had one decent night and that was due to one player and one tip. This place is a joke and I've had it. Before I go quitting and trying to move elsewhere, I wanted to ask:What do players want from a dealer? What causes you to tip? What causes you to stiff? B&M players aren't the same that they were 3 years ago so maybe you guys could give me some help on what your looking for when you go to a table. Whenever I'm at a table I let the action flow like it should. I don't rush any players that don't deserve it. I smile, say "good luck" when I leave the table, I listen to their stupid jokes. I'm hoping it's just the part of the country I'm in (midwest) but if you guys suggest something I'm not doing already... I'll give it a shot. Thanks in advance. And please, try not to flame too hard :D

uhhh.... deal some badbeat jackpot hands and hands that have large pots...seriously, If a dealer miss deals and I have a good hand they won't get tipped, or if they make me reach for my cards, or don't deal em out where my hand is... this very anal, but very simple to follow...

I dunno, man. People are d-bags. I've never dealt, but I bartended for 2 years, and after a while, you just come to grips with the fact that a lot of people don't have a grasp of commonly accepted social practices. I always tip $1 regardless of pot size at 1/2, and usually more like 2-3. I dunno. At a B&M, I'm playing to have a good time. I have no illusions of ever being a professional, so why shouldn't some one else benefit from my good fortune as well? People that rake a $100 pot, don't tip the dealer, and then say something like, "I'm doing this for a living, I shouldn't have to tip"... yeah, that's what pisses me off at casinos. Bro...if you're playing 1/2 for a living, your life sucks.

I'd want what you said, for them to be quiet and deal the cards. However, if they're hot, I might remind them that this is a service industry... and I need some servicing.
Depends on the game...and what time it is? If i'm playing at 4 am, I'm going to need someone talking to me in order to stay awake. And other players look at me funny when I start talking to myself.

I think it sucks that you deal the game professionally and quickly and get stiffed for it. This is the only thing I tip for, if the dealer is cracking jokes or something I really don't care, as long as he deals the game quick and well. I don't tip based on anything besides speed and efficiency. I live west coast and proficient dealers seem to get tipped well, if it's different in the midwest you might need to try some new stuff. Maybe chat with the players or be funny, I don't know what to tell you.

I like very friendly and personable dealers who remember me and seem happy to see me when I come in. I don't tip online dealers and if the dealer at my B & M behaves like a robot, I tip less. However, I always tip at least $1 dollar no matter what the pot up to a few dollars for larger pots. That's just out of a sense of obligation though if I don't particularly care for the dealer.

One of the part-time dealers at my local room uses this line whenever he comes to the table for the first time..."OK guys, treat me well, I'm putting 4 kids through college right now."The guy is like 25 years old. It lightens everyone up to him a bit but it also plants that seed in the players mind to tip. He's a cool guy, so now the players will tell this line to the table.Obviously, at a club you'll be seeing the same players time and time again. Probably not the scenario you'll be encountering, but if you can come up with a simple joke to bring a little levity to the table and to remind players that tips are the deal, maybe that'll work for you.Good luck man. Hope things get better.

Me neither! Every time I click on the dealer on Party to give him money, he just asks me if I want more chips or a different deck. *******.

I'm sure we're the exception with how much most of us play, but I would assume the avalibility of online poker is hurting you. Most players might not even know about the tipping policy. Years ago when I first went, I ceratinly didn't. I still forget sometimes (usually catch up when he/she leaves the table), since I play mostly online.Otherwise you certainly seem to be doing it the best way. Very professional. Usually someone that jokes and is personable, but also doing it correctly gets more of a tip in my experiences. Most non-casino multi table tournaments I play.. I end up dealing the table i'm on.. and though I got it down by now.. 3-4 player all in, multiple pots, are certainly the best way to show a good dealer. It's hilarious watching casual players try to make sense of the situation and say how much should be in each pot. It's like a chicken with it's head cut off. Or simply reading who wins (obviously without knowing/playing the hands) and supposed to get it right immedietly when they're flipped... ya definately earn the tips.
