bill banning online poker

Recommended Posts

but how can they do this? isnt the internet a free place were no1 can tell you this is illegal or wrong a place of free speech? i was always taught this
I thought when those in the US Government tried to ban online gaming a year ot two ago it got shot down because there was an injunction by the WTO saying they couldn't do it because it violated free trade anti-trust rules against foreign companies who were given the right (by the U.S., no less) to solicit customers across the world? although, that reminds me.....
One thing I'm confused about is in a number of states live poker is legal, but internet poker is a grey area? How's that work?
We have a Federal law that doesn't allow any type of gambling wager to take place over a wire telephone line (or something to that effect). It was put in place during the 60's and 70's to deter (and allow the FBI to issue warrants towards) the various mobs who made money off of bookkeeping by taking sports bets over the telephone. Right wing conservatives are trying to say that internet gaming of all types (including poker) is violating that law (they basically just don't like the idea that American citizens are making money off of unconventional means).
Oh, and the way the US has decimated the internet porn world (s.w.) I have the utmost confidence that the online Poker world has nothing to worry about!!!
That's some awesome sarcasm right there!I bet this "policitian" from VA is really getting paid off on the down-low by some Indian casino lobby that feels that internet poker threatens them (even though it only promotes the game and make ppl want to play more).......In the end, they'll never stop it. People will find a way around it and it will only grow more, just look at what happened when the US Government tried to prohibit alcohol......

In the end the US will get their tax money and everyone will be happy.BTW...all you democrats can kiss my Republican censored!
FYPI have no problem with the government wanting to regulate online poker. I would hope they would make it legal, but that won't happen. I would pay taxes on my winnings. In Texas, about an hour from my house, we had an Indian Reservation try to open a casino. The State's AG shut it down, and I believe it was mainly because of political pressure from Louisiana. Go to any casino over in Shreveport or Lake Charles, and 90% of the cars are from Texas. So, I get to drive 2 hours to play in a B and M. I bet this "policitian" from VA is really getting paid off on the down-low by some Indian casino lobby that feels that internet poker threatens them (even though it only promotes the game and make ppl want to play more)....... The states that have legalized gambling would benefit from the passage of this bill. People are still going to gamble and play poker...It's always about the money, no matter if you are Democrat, Republican, or poker player

This is good news for Stacked with Daniel Negreanu. If US players can't play online, the next best thing would be to buy Daniel's new game and play for fun.On the other hand, this is bad news for FullContact Poker because afterall, it's an online poker site.Good thing Daniel is wise enough to diversify. Plus, he also has that silly live poker career to fall back on.

Although it is different case - They were pretty successful when they went after the Napster users. They used IP addresses to find those guys.I think that when the federal government can figure a way to tax internet poker/gambling it will be bigger than it is now. Wal Mart will have an internet poker site. (sw)I know that poker is big when my local podunk TV station does a feature on a Ohio college student that came in 4th at the 2006 WPT Poker Stars Caribbean Adventure. During the feature they showed this guy nine tabling on poker stars.

i don't know what's worse. the fact that hundreds of millions of dollars are leaving the U.S. due to offshore poker sites or the fact that the U.S. gov't may end up getting their greedy bastard little hands on our dollars.seems that nothing can stop our politicians from trying to shake us down.nothing worse for the poker economy than having the bastard gov't shake everyone for 35% of their winnings.

Yeah it really worked out well when they tried to prosecute an 80 year old woman and some 12 year old kid. It was such a massize PR blow they ended all user prosecutions and went after the company itself and bullied them into folding.

I bet this "policitian" from VA is really getting paid off on the down-low by some Indian casino lobby that feels that internet poker threatens them (even though it only promotes the game and make ppl want to play more)....... Indian Casinos aren't legal in Virginia, so probably not.Good luck.

Help keep poker legal, sign up today!http://www.pokerplayersalliance.org/
yeah that'll stop the politicians in their tracks
I couldn’t agree more. If poker players pool their resources and send a lobbyist to congress with a bag of bribe money, it will go a long way towards making poker legal(online and off). Or we could sit around bitching about it helplessly on a message board.

It wouldn't have to JUST be an Indian Casino in VA, IMHO. I would imagine that some B&M Casino companies (some, not all), Indian or Not, would love to lobby at least one senator or congressman toward the "ban internet gaming" cause, because it would most likely snowball throughout legislation throughout the nation. In the end, it just comes down to money. Always has.

If you look at your state laws, you will find that it is probably already illegal for you to play online. Hence why every poker site has a statement that says you are bound by the gambling laws of your current jursdiction (i.e. where you IP originates from)

They need to leave internet gaming alone..If you stop internet gaming it won't stop people from playing, it will just stop them from playing online.More people playing live will increase the crimerate(robberies, etc). So what would you rather have?People playing online calling each other donks.Or people playing in completely unregulated homegames where someone gets stabbed when they river a 6 high straight?
