So, many posts about the Tournament of Champions going on...Post about Paul Phillips and his comments on the TOC, not locked: http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-foru...pic.php?t=36021Post about "some people some of the time" Locked with a comment that it could have just been posted in the official TOC thread: http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-foru...pic.php?t=35975I couldn't find the official TOC thread, btw. Probably just not in general, and if so, that probably should have been pointed out.Post about Hoyt C and a question about how he got invited, locked with no reason.: http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-foru...pic.php?t=36020Which to me seemed like a valid question and not really a lockable offense.Could some moderator clarify for me when something gets locked and when it does not? Like, why the Paul Phillips TOC thread is not locked, but the Hoyt one is. Also, when you lock, can you explain in better detail where it should go to help facilitate the learning process of locked threads for newbies?Note, this is not a pissed off post. This is a real question for clarification, and a suggestion for making the board better over all. Please take it as such.Ray

BTW.. this thread will be locked and moved to the "Official I don't understand the rules section"if you can find it...
Thanks for turning an honest question into a troll post. It would get locked because people like you make snide comments about 20 year old moderators. I'd like to keep it informational/constructive.I thought after I posted it, that it may get moved to suggestions, and if it does, that's fair.Ray

All the locking makes me wonder how many active threads we will have... I mean, whenever someone says something like "Look what this fish said" the moderator will lock it and say "There's already a thread for this". Alright mods, if you're going to lock something because a thread already exists, could you at least put up a link to the thread you're referring to? You know, close the door but open a window?

I doubt the functionality exists, but a great function would be if a comment about something already in a thread could be moved UNDER that thread, instead of being locked, but I think most Forums do not have that functionality. The first comment you made brings to mind the fact that there is a fine line between topics quote often, and we don't want to have five topics total on General because all of the other topics are "close enough" to be locked. This is where the moderator's job is hardest because they have to draw the line on whether or not a thread is repetitive or not. In the examples above, I tend to disagree with the Hoyt thread lock because it was a thread about Hoyt more than a thread about the TOC, and I think it would have gotten lost in a TOC thread with no answers. But that is my OPINION and obviously the moderators saw it differently. I'm just trying to get a feel for where they draw the line and, as you said in the second paragraph, suggesting they be a little bit more informative in the locking procedure.Ray

best thing to do is let us admins know your concerns -- which you are doing, thank you -- pm us as well, we need to hear your concerns to look into specific situations.thanks, chris
Hey, this brings up another good point. Its not clear to me who moderates what, so its hard for me to know who I should be messaging. Perhaps we should have a sticky in General on who the mods are, and what each mod covers (if its divided by time frames, boards, responsibility, etc.).Ray

Seriously, just look at admin's post count. He's not even a Veteran. Don't listen to him.I'm kidding. Please don't ban me.

im not a fan of all this locking. i was typing in a big response to a thread and i hit post and oh, its locked, great. the forum does not need to be perfect all the time, if there are a few duplicate threads that are focusing on different things thats ok. chill on the lockings.

Seconded, I really don't see how locking down a thread does any good at all. If a thread is pointless, it'll die out. If it's receiving responses, it means it's a topic that posters want to explore further. If a topic receiving replies has already been brought up, why not lock the original topic which is being ignored? There has to be a better way of dealing with the flaming problem (which I view as the reason threads are being locked...), why not just create a forum called Flame This and move any threads that move off-subject there, rather than locking them?It just feels like pointless muscle-flexing to me, but what do I know?

One small bump for an actual answer. I appreciate Admins response, but it didn't really answer the questions of why some get locked and some do not, and who really is responsible for what so we know who to talk to.Any help would be appreciated guys.Ray

I agree with both of the above posts. I made a new thread the other day and it got locked. I even PM'd a mod and all they did was give me a "It's already been discussed why threads get locked go read the rules". So I did and I still didn't have a clear reason as to why it was locked. It was a question about rules, it was on an airing of the ESPN WSOP coverage so they then said go post it the "Last nights WSOP" thread. Well the thread about the WSOP coverage was about 4 pages long and most of the thread had to do with Tiffany Williams being a Donkey, my post had nothing to do with Tiffany Williams...but the mods seemed to think it was related (still have absolutely no clue how it was related). A second pm was sent and the same initial response was givin. Then Governator pm'd me and said give the new mods some time to settle in.

Post about Paul Phillips and his comments on the TOC, not locked:http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-forums/viewtopic.php?t=36021
Because this is a discussion on the analysis of what Daniel was saying in his blog. This is not referring to updates of the TOC nor is it talking about what's going on at the TOC. This is talking about the Pepsi/Harrah's/ESPN fiasco. There IS a difference and the moderators can see this difference.
Post about "some people some of the time" Locked with a comment that it could have just been posted in the official TOC thread: http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-foru...pic.php?t=35975
While I'm not Keith and don't really want to speak for him, I think this was locked because it seemed to be more of a congratulations to Mike Matusow than a question fostering some kind of discussion. Again, I didn't lock this, so that's just a guess.
I couldn't find the official TOC thread, btw. Probably just not in general, and if so, that probably should have been pointed out.
There is/was an official thread entitled "Toc" in the General forum. Roughly 5 pages of replies, I think (=200). When we locked some of the older threads you're likely looking at, the Toc thread was on page one and usually at the top so there was no need to link it, because a reference to the thread sufficed.
Post about Hoyt C and a question about how he got invited, locked with no reason.: http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-foru...pic.php?t=36020
This should not have been locked. I am in full agreement with you. I don't know who locked it or why they did it, but I am unlocking it and bumping it to the top of the page. My apologies.Threads are locked based on whether the question has been asked ad nauseum (and can be answered by using the search feature) or if there is already a thread about the subject. Threads are locked at the discresion of the moderators and administrators. From the Forum Rules:
FCP's administrators and moderators reserve the right to delete, edit or otherwise modify any content posted at their discretion, as well as, the right to ban any member, username, IP or email address without notice.
Basically, if we feel that it should be locked, moved, etc. we reserve the right to do that.If you have any questions or concerns, PLEASE contact a moderator or administrator privately and the situation will be taken care of promptly.. I can't stress this enough as it gets your point accross much better than a public hanging.I will respond to all other replies in 5 minutes seeing as how the site is slow and it takes an eternity just to click a link.

I agree. If you're gonna lock a thread, please put a reason why in there. And if you're locking a post because it is in the wrong forum, why not move it instead.
Locked threads are given a reason at the discresion of moderators and administrators. If you feel that your thread has been unfairly locked or would like to know why your thread was locked, simply private message a moderator or administrator and you will be given a reason if one has not been given to you. If a post is in the wrong forum, it will be moved and left open. I am not aware of any that have been locked because they are in the wrong forum. If there is one, please let a moderator or administrator know and we will look into it.
Alright mods, if you're going to lock something because a thread already exists, could you at least put up a link to the thread you're referring to? You know, close the door but open a window?
If the link is on page one of the General forum, I will not be including a link. Otherwise, I will usually include a link or simply answer the question myself (i.e. Is Gus Hansen broke?).
I doubt the functionality exists, but a great function would be if a comment about something already in a thread could be moved UNDER that thread, instead of being locked, but I think most Forums do not have that functionality.
This is actually something we're working on - it's called a "merge topics/posts" feature. The website (and forum) will be improved a lot within the next few months and I (along with most everyone else) am hoping that we can install this feature. Many updates, I think, will be included in the next version of FCP, so you won't see them immediately with this version.
Hey, this brings up another good point. Its not clear to me who moderates what, so its hard for me to know who I should be messaging. Perhaps we should have a sticky in General on who the mods are, and what each mod covers (if its divided by time frames, boards, responsibility, etc.).
You can contact any moderator and, if they do not control that section of the forum, they can quickly get in contact with someone who does and address the issue. FWIW, I moderate General and all strategy sections, Theresa113 moderates General and Off Topic, and KDawg and Steve7stud moderate the entire forum.More to come....

No, this is not okay and this is part of the reason Daniel added more moderators. We are supposed to remove the clutter and duplicate topics and try to put an end to the flaming. This is our job.

If a thread is pointless, it will generate more pointless flames. Some die out, and some don't. There was one topic created yesterday that was pointless and I contacted Governator to find out what I should do about it. He said "Let it go unless the regulars start flaming it," and, not 3 minutes later, there were a bunch of flames. This does not create a good forum atmosphere. The posters can discuss it further in the original thread. I remember a few weeks ago (and months ago) whenever ESPN showed 2 new WSOP episodes, there would be 11 threads on it in 10 minutes. Last night, there was one thread created all night and there were 11 pages in that thread!! We're clearly making progress.
One small bump for an actual answer
Sorry, everyone was busy with other things at the moment. We do have lives outside of the forum (hard to believe, I know). That's why we need the users to work with us.

And in regards to us being "new mods" and "egotistical" and all of this, please stop it. The problem is that this forum has NEVER had more than one or two mods working at a time. This is completely new territory for evereyone and it's going to be trial by error for a while. We're continuously developing new policies and clearer policies in regards to what moderators should be doing and what administrators should be doing. This isn't something that's going to happen overnight. It's been 4 days and it's going to be difficult for moderators and users alike to adjust to. Give it some time.Lastly, please stop villifying us publically. Moderators are humans too and we do make mistakes occassionally. If you feel a mistake has been made, contact us PRIVATELY to have it corrected. Surely you wouldn't like it if everytime you made a mistake, somebody created a thread about it for the entire world to harp on you.

This is a really good response' date=' and a great way for me to judge whether I am correct in posting a new thread or not. This simple sentence' date=' plus your explanations for the other threads and why they were or were not locked are fantastic for helping people understand what the right behaviour is on the forums. Thanks. Actually, thanks for the response over all, it was very helpful.

I hope you can agree this was not and is not my intent. You've seen me around the forums enough that I can be an incredible jerk (when the situation calls for it :club:) and I have gone out of my way to NOT do so for this one. I wanted it to be an open, honest and constructive discussion for everyone's education. :)Thanks again for the response!Ray

Just read the other two replies. More great stuff. Thanks for the list of who moderates what, that helps a lot. I'd love to see it stickied somewhere.Regarding my bump, hey, I wasn't being some newb bumping after 10 minutes. I gave it two hours before I did a bump. :club: (Ok ok, I'll concede it's still a factor of me being an impatient dork.)I know some people got rude in the thread, and I agree with the Custom that complaining about things publicly normally is not going to do a lot of good. I tried very hard to create a constructive thread rather than a destructive one. Just hoping the mods understand that SOME public conversations can be useful to the group as a whole...Ray

Ray, I know you weren't being a jerk, and I appreciate that. But, if you recall, there was another thread on Monday and it was an attack on the moderators. We just much prefer private conversations than public ones as we adjust to our roles, and I really didn't want this turning into the thread from monday.
