beat a field of 727 out of 745 on pstars= $0

Don't u guys hate it when you play these freerolls or tournaments where you know you need a top 9 finish to make $ period and you crap out right near the end. Tonight in 1k freeroll I beat out 727 of 745 and 18th place netted me $0. It's hard bringing myself to play another tourney today after 4hrs of work nets me the big 0. A friend did ask me if I take pride in finishing that high even though I don't make the money. Well, to be honest, after thinking about it, it's all about the money to me. I'd rather finish 745 of 745 if I'm going to finish 18th or even 10th for that matter. It takes less of a toll on you at the end. A low finish and you strap right back up and plug away again. Thoughts?

I disagree slightly with you, the other day on a free roll at pacific poker I played for 2 and a half hours, got 44th out of 1200 players and it was a good feeling, its fun to look at the leaderboard and see you are in 13th place out of 1200 , dont let poker become about money, it takes away from the fun and beauty of it.

I posted that in my $0 to $1000 thread today..played freeroll 2000 players top 30 were paid, played 4 hours, but got extremely lucky....while i was in my big blind with 5495 chips with the blinds 4000/8000 the last 2 players busted out and i got 29th place 30 seconds later...4 hours $12.50....just think playing $20 in a 2000 field. you would make at least $100 if not more like $200

i think its good that u made it so far cause now u been to that stage of a 700 person tourny,, so next time your in that position you'll have had an similar experience to draw off of.... if u had been knocked out 1st instead you would lose the experience that u had, which can only help u at a later date!!!!!!

I'm with you dude.  Going out last would be so much better than going out RIGHT before the money.  Ugh.  Good luck going forward.
I would have to disagree for only one reason....and that is that in my own case....when I started to go out on the bubble in a huge tourney...it was an indication that I was improving my MTT play. From there, using techniques garnered from Daniel's website and others,,,and just plain excperience, I started hitting the money. If you have never cashed in a large (>500 entries) and are now hitting the bubble....consider it as you are improving....if you regularly cash and are now busting out at the bubble, some adjustments need to be made. One thing that has improved my overall results has been not just playing to cash or move up in $$$ but to make the moves necessary to accumulate chips. If you don't take this kind of attitude to the bubble, you will never be in a position chips wise to go for the win.Just my thoughts.

Internet was down yesterday. I'll clarify my response to a few answers I've received. I don't need any further "know I can make it" type tourneys because I can reach that final table at a decent level. The point I brought up was that if I have to go out before the money, I honestly think it saves both TIME & MONEY to go out very early. It's something that I believe fosters better play in other tourneys if you have discipline and allows you to retain your energy for a tourney that you are going to place in. I'll say this...the days that I get knocked out early and just call it a day to do something else, those are the days I appreciate. The days I barely make the money and miss the money just barely in maybe 2-3 tourneys that day...they are BY FAR THE ROUGHEST. Thanks again for the input guys.

Basically. In more detail, if go out on the bubble in a tourney, I will look back and say "I wish I woulda went out right away, because I wouldn't have wasted so much time and I wouldn't have such a bad taste in my mouth."It also depends on the mindset. If you go in confident that you have the ability to finish in the money so much so that you would be severely disappointed if you didn't, then any place out of the money sucks, but at least if you finish last you didn't waste your whole day on it. If you go in with the mindset that you need this experience to better your play, and making money is just the unnecessary cherry in your cocktail, then you might be happy on the bubble.Good luck and good odds.

Two things. First I basically agree with you about dying fast if you don't get in the money. This especially applies to small buyin tourneys, things less than 100 dollar buyins. There are many different tactics that go along with this mindset. You just gamble a lot early, try to accumilate chips, and other kinds of things. The normal thing for a good tourney player is to avoid close things like coin tosses if possible, but your goal should just be to get as many chips as you can early. You have to decide your goals when starting. The second point basically is just, if you want to get money for finishing somewhat high up in a tourney, then don't play freerolls. The entire prize fund for (most) freerolls is really tiny, so at least spend 20 bucks or something for a buyin, and then you'll get some money when you make it to the top 20 like you did. The fact you got nothing was based on the structure and the fact it was a freeroll. *shrug*

i always chalk all tournaments up to experience regardless of placement.thats just me though
I haven't started playing online tourneys for real money, but it seems to me that you need to put time into something to become better, and you should expect that you can just go into a tournament and win $$ right away or every time. If you don't win $$, keep trying to improve so you can next time...or the time after or the next week or whatever. If you aren't making progress, that's where I'd be peeved--and I'd look at my hand history to see where I was leaking to avoid making the same mistakes.Getting upset about not finishing in the money is missing the point, in my view. That's a shame, yes, but my mission would be what I need to do to end up in the money, not moaning about not being there already. A E

I played a freeroll on UB this weekend. We started with 2500 people and I ended up finishing in 13th place when pocket 7s held up against my AKs. I got a whopping 3 bonus dollars, but the experience was worth much more.
