mrdannyg 274
Which is a big difference from a month or two ago, where he was just a cartoonish xenophone. I mean, that's still true, but the whole non-politician and "build a wall" mantra may be inviting to a depressing number of people. And if people don't seem to care that his basic sales pitch that he is a non-politican who funds his own campaign is an impressively blatant lie, I don't see his rhetoric becoming any less effective (sorry, can't post links on this at work)

FCP Bob 1,312
Trump isn't about specific policy positions. He appeals to people who want an authoritarian leader. This Study Proves Why Trump’s Supporters Won’t Leave Him No Matter What He Does A social scientist with the University of Massachusetts conducted a study last week designed to identify trends among the supporters of the leading political candidates for the 2016 race. With respect to Trump’s supporters in particular, the study found that the main statistical variable that could be used to predict whether someone was a Trump supporter was not race, age, religion, income, or education. It is, rather, an impulse towards authoritarianism.

iBeaver 409
I tweeted one of them last night that I read. The one where Cruz is the anointed one to transfer the wealth before the end of days is quite the whopper.

iBeaver 409
She won't be indicted at all. I'd bet what little $ I have. People have been saying the hammer is going to fall for a long time. All these reports how new evidence was found then no evidence was ever shown. The only people trying to say she's about to be indicted are people trying to thwart her campaign. Most are just republicans trying to keep it in the news. Don't see many independent people talking about it. And when they do they don't seem to think she's getting indicted. Go Bernie either way. Never thought he had a chance. Now I got someone to root for. Cruz had his fun last night saying that .02% of the Iowa population somehow stands for all Americans belief in him. He won't do well the rest of the race. Much like NH will be easy for Bernie, Iowa was filled with 50k evangelical wing nuts to help him there. The race will be Rubio and Trump. mrdannyg 274
I actually tend to agree with Serge that things could get worse for Clinton. Then again, I think Cruz or Trump will deny basic rights to tens of millions of people and electing them would probably be responsible for catastrophic civil or foreign wars, so I'm not sure how that compares with her illegal hiding public information. IMO, the worst possible things that Clinton could possibly have been hiding are a fraction of what Cruz or Trump have basically put forward as policy, so it isn't really a question of 'disagreeing with someone's personaliy or politics' (from MY perspective). mrdannyg 274
Regarding Bob's authoritarian piece, I think Trump gained a ton in that respect last night. I saw some predictions that his followers wanted a frontrunner and he'd drop off as soon as he lost something. But when he lost, he was gracious and thankful to Iowans, not a crazy firebrand like I'd have expected. For people who desparately want an authoritative figure, the only thing better than a strict guy who tells you he knows everything and he's in charge is the strict guy who knows everything and that he's in charge, but it's because you are so smart and special to put him there, and gives you a nice daddy hug every once in a while. That describes every politician, not just Trump...he just seems disinterested in even faking the policy junk that no one listens to anyway.

Dubey 1,035
I'm rooting hard for Bernie. A lot of his policies may be "unrealistic", but what percentage of campaign promises ever come to fruition? He actually seems elike a good human being, and if he gets elected, he may not be able to bring in a social democracy like he wants, but even if all he is able to do is pull America a little bit to the left, it can't be a bad thing.
mrdannyg 274
For the Bernie supporters, a totally unrealistic and hypothetical question - what do you think would be better for the USA, long-term (by any measure you want) - Clinton as President with a Democratic majority in the Senate (or House or whatever matters), or Sanders as president but a Republican majority?
serge 904
Lot of the policies the Democrats propose are basically ridiculous when you try to implement them. To the uneducated a $15 minimum wage and free post secondary education might seem awesome, but in practice it's impossible and wouldn't work economically. It's a pipe dream that gets sold by socialists. If you are American and happy with the 7 years of Obama then vote for Clinton. Obamacare has been a disaster , terrorists are having their way because the President for a lack of a better word is a wuss. The gun shootings are getting worse with no proper policy to combat them. In the words of Donald we need to make America great again and that's only possible with a conservative in power.

mrdannyg 274
A $15 minimum wage has already worked where it has been implemented. Free post-secondary education is not at all a pipe dream when you consider how much is already publicly funded, and that the intention would be for it to apply more at the community college level than for everyone going to Harvard for free. Those are pretty far-left policies though, I'll admit. Obamacare has been far from a disaster. The other things you said are the precise opposite of true. International terrorism against the U.S. has been almost non-existent since the Conservatives have been out of office, since apparently Conservatives have learned nothing about modern war since Vietnam. I find it hard to even imagine a cogent argument that gun safety will get better under a Conservative government. I like your all-star game metaphor.
