THISAs someone that has worked in the drug store industry for 13+ years I'm quite familiar with this yearly debate.Yes it is possible to get a mild case of the flu from a flu shot but generally this only occurs to those people who are already more susceptible to getting the flu.From the Mayo Clinic:In some cases, people who get a flu shot can still get the flu, but they may get a much less severe form of the illness and, most important, they'll have a decreased risk of flu-related complications — especially pneumonia, heart attack, stroke and death — to which older adults are especially vulnerable.A flu shot will protect you from many strains of the flu but it's basically impossible to keep up with current strains. Generally the shots are 6-18 months behind the curve of current strains.The best thing you can do to prevent getting/spreading the flu is washing your hands regularly, avoiding crowds (when possible), and covering your mouth when you sneeze or cough. There are post-diagnosis remedies available (TamiFlu) but in many cases rest and fluid intake are really the only help. Your body will rid itself of the flu over time. Most people that die from flu actually die from flu related-symptoms and NOT the actual flu strain.

The flu shots will protect against a few of the strains which will be most dangerous to the public, so you can obviously still get the flu. There is alot of fear and misinformation published about vaccines because most of the gneral public don't understand viruses or vaccines.

Wouldn't it seem that since we (being poker players) are around an awful lot of different people in the casinos all the time, some of whom have questionable hygiene in the first place, would be exposed to potential viruses all the time anyways? Who knows what's floating around the cardroom at any given time? I've seen players looking like death hacking up chunks of lung at the tables, but refuse to go home cus they're stuck a couple hundred. Some dealers aren't much better but they need the tips.I would think that in itself would be a strong case for getting the shot....Pancakes.

what silky says is true. Most of the vaccines can lessen the effects of the flu by allowing the body to build up antibodies against them when they are introduced via the flu shot. But the best way is good hand washing all the time, and just be aware of your environment.

There is absolutely no evidence the vaccine for the swine flu will even stop the swine flu. There is more downside to getting the vaccine than benefit.

I work at a children's hospital where the seasonal flu shot (not the swine flu one) will be mandatory this year. If we don't get it, we will be fired unless there is a strong medical reason for us not to. I get the shot every year anyway -- not because I fear a case of the flu for myself, but because I could spread it to someone whose immune system can't handle it. The children's cancer clinic is directly across the hall from my office suite.As for the H1N1 virus shots, no one knows how much of that might be available and who will be chosen to have the option of receiving it. It might be pretty scarce and this whole discussion of getting the swine flu vaccine might be moot.Donuts are one of my favorite foods. But I am diabetic and shouldn't eat any of the choices listed. Can you offer a low-carb option?

I had an experience like nutz with the flu shots for about 3 years in a row where I would get sick immediatly after taking it.. it seemed like I was paying to get the flu, so I decided to save a buck and just get it naturally. in case anyone did not read the general posting Chrozzo is currently in ICU in critical condition with the swine flu and pneumonia, I spoke with his parents today they almost lost him on Tuesday and a few times this week. They will keep me informed and I will post in general on his condition there is more info there.
