Diet And Exercise.

So I am on a mission to lose 40lbs in 4 months. In truth I probably only need to lose 20, but I want to lose 40.A poker forum doesn't seem like the ideal place to ask these kinds of questions, but this is the only forum I belong to.So.........40lbs in 4 months? Doable? Is that healthy? Please share any thoughts that you have.Seriously.

It's heathily do-able. A popular target is 2lbs per week, which is 32-34lbs in 4 months. But, depending how much you drastically change your diet and exercise, you may find yourself losing more in the first month, so 40lbs is a solid target.Good luck.

Yeah. The keys are as follows:1) Instead of starving yourself or eating 3 square meals a day, try to eat 6 small meals (300 calories or so on average, starting with a larger breakfast and "tapering" as the day continues). This will basically kick your metabolism into overdrive, so your body will never be in fast mode, and won't store any of the calories you consume as fat. 2) Eat sensibly. It's not rocket science. The foods that are bad are usually really obviously bad. Just identify your really bad habits (fast food, candy, beer, etc.), and try to minimize them or eliminate them completely. Cut as much sugar as you can. Don't drink juice and (non-diet) pop. Keep the super-carby foods to a minimum if you can. Try to read labels and know what you're putting in your body. Pay attention to your intake. Etc.3) Get SOME exercize as often as you can. If you're the kind of guy who can get on the treadmill and run 5 miles/day, then do it. If not, run a mile in the morning and another one at night. If you really want to turn your body into a weight-cutting furnace, add as much muscle mass as you can (this means: concentrate on your legs and other big muscle groups). If you're looking for vanity muscles, toss some weights around in your spare time, but make sure you try to add some muscle somewhere. Every pound of muscle you add is another pound of your body weight that will burn calories while you rest/sleep.That's it. Cheat every once in a while if you have to, but don't get carried away. Drink water, take some vitamins, maybe try to add some Cod Liver Oil or something with Omega 3/6 fatty-acids (helps with general well-being and insulin sensitivity, which controls fat storage). Have a goal. I weigh myself every morning, since seeing the progress helps, and enforces my habits. If you need specific recommendations for caloric intake for your particular body composition, post your height, weight, and other vitals and I'll toss that up for you (or anyone else who's looking to lose a few pounds). I can offer some basic workouts of varying intensity depending on your goals, too. Wang

Yeah, I think it sounds about right. I'm still pretty young at 31.
Seriously, Steve, check out this thread:http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-foru...amp;hl=OfficialI suppose it will get more action now that New Year's resolutions and the such will be made.
Wow, superthread. Thanks a lot. Some great stuff on there.

Ridiculously helpful. I joined a weight loss program. To be honest, I know what healthy foods are.......but I don't exactly know how to eat healthy and correct portion size, etc.So for right now I am starting with 1600-1700 calories a day. And then I drop to 1400-1500.Exercise is on me. I'm thinking that I will join a gym and do cardio a few times a week. I'm out of shape for sure. I don't look heavy. I look like that guy who could lose 20 lbs. But I want to be fairly fit. The reason that I just want to do cardio is because I don't want to burn myself out. A lot of people seem to do too much at once and give up.Ideally I want to lose 40lb's as quickly as possible. Learn how to eat sensibly and exercise in a normal fashion. Walking my dog is nice, but he is gettin older and we don't really walk.....we stroll. So that's where I'm at. But I will get in shape.

I'm currently trying to get back to a weight I haven't seen since my 20s.Tactical Bear's post pretty much say most of what I would say. When you first add muscle mass you may stop losing or gain weight, because the muscle weighs more, but in the long run it's your best bet.I think it's easy to lose two pounds per week at first, but as you get closer to your target weight, it becomes more difficult, so plan on that. I'm at a point where, based on my lifestyle and weight, I'm just planning on half a pound per week. If I cut all social ties and refused to be a part of my family, I could probably do a pound per week, but I'd rather be realistic. Also, just within the last few weeks the results of a huge study came out, and it turns out that the Atkins-like Diet is the winner, which is basically eat healthy and worry about carbs -- limit white bread, potatoes, pasta, crackers, chips, etc -- and don't worry so much about meat and fat. If you are going to eat meat, pick a lean cut, and choose foods with healthy fats (e.g. fish), but the big sin is carbs. Load up on fruits and vegetables.

You know, the biggest mistake crash dieters make is that they actually eat too little. If you want to lose 20 lbs. of fat, eating 1400 calories a day is going to be counter-productive. What your body will do, more than likely, is think (if, you know, bodies could think) to itself: "Wow, not much food coming in. We're going to have to make some adjustments. First, let's store as much as we can as fat, since lean times might be ahead. Secondly, we're probably going to have to eat up some muscle tissue for food." That is terrible on just so many levels. Instead of eating 475 calories 3 times a day, you'd be better off eating 300 calories 6 times a day. I'm 6'1" 160. My metabolism is, in general, pretty crappy. I do not work out, like, at all. Two years ago I was probably 225+. I lost most of that weight within 6 months. Believe it or not, that's the easy part. The harder part is finding a sustainable program that lets allows you to keep the weight off without being miserable. A lot of my days look something like this:Breakfast- Oatmeal, cereal, yogurt (450 calories)Meal 2- Triscuits with Ham and Ken's Steakhouse Lite Honey Mustard (300 calories)Meal 3 (at work) - Peanut butter crackers (220 calories)Meal 4 (at work) - Protein bar (250 calories)Meal 5 - Some kind of meat I like (300 calories)Meal 6 - Smaller serving of some kind of meat I like before bed (200 calories)I keep the carbs down at night, eat right when I get up, and snack throughout the day. I'm rarely famished, I don't obsess over the small stuff (no way peanut butter crackers are anything but terrible for you), and I eat every 3 hours on the nose. I always keep a few protein or slimfast bars hanging out in my car or at work, just in case. That's right around 1800 calories, and if I eat like that I'll probably be losing a little weight. On Sundays, I let myself eat pretty much whatever (usually ends up being pop tarts and pizza and sometimes cookies + poptarts = poptart sandwich), then I lose it back during the week, so I don't gain or lose anything. You want to make sure your body doesn't think it's fasting. If it does, you'll lose what little muscle mass you have, and start storing belly fat and shit. So if you're hungry, have a snack. Keep an eye on it, but when your body gets hungry and you don't satisfy it, it's going to react by cannibalizing muscle tissue and doing other crazy stuff. If you've got 20 pounds to lose, you could probably eat 2200 calories a day and still turn your body into a fat-burning furnace.

My weight at the biggining of the summer was 240 I am just under 210 right now. My one problem was a very slow metabolism and even with fruit and fibre I was having trouble. Metamucile has done wonders for me. If you are very regular than I wouldn't advise it but if you have trouble with metabolism it is very good at least it is for me.Good luck

Wang is pretty much spot on. Also if your looking to shed some weight try and do some cardio first thing in the morning when you have nothing in your stomach. This forces your body to use fat stores as energy therefore shedding both weight and fat.

Plus it's bad for your heart to do cardio first thing when you wake up.
Good for your CHEST! though.

Here is what I use: www.crossfit.comI dont advise that you jump right in but personally I would actually rather be dead than run on a treadmill. The best way to use this site is to look at the videos and just try to add a very few of the excercises in a fairly low impact manner. Thats how I started and now I absolutely LOVE it. And I guarantee you are burning more fat, building more muscle, and generally becoming more athletic by employing just some of the crossfit exercises. There theory is essentially to do full-body excercises that develop your "functional muscle".

Steve I have been going to a weight loss clinic here that my doctor sent me to. It is a specialty program that has Specialists in weight management. It is amazing. I have lost 60lbs so far. like the others stated 6 small meals mostly protein based. I am on a very small calorie intake of 1000 calories /day but I have lots to lose. I also will be having surgery in Michigan in the new year for further weight lost. Exercise at least 3 times a week for 30- 60 minutes. Drink plenty of water. Take vitamins. here are a few web sites my clinichttp://www.whartonmedicalclinic.com/and this is the place in Michigan that I will be having my surgeryhttp://www.barixclinics.com/at the top has patient social website it has all kinds of tips

is this really true?
juices are very high in sugars, thus they tell you to stay away from them, use yougrut and fresh fruit and ice to make a drink or buy pre mix protein drinks, they come in many favours you can add a piece of fruit to them and some yougrut

Yeah, I think it sounds about right. I'm still pretty young at 31.That makes it easier. Another ten years is going to make a huge difference in the degree of difficulty. Exercise is on me. I'm thinking that I will join a gym and do cardio a few times a week. I'm out of shape for sure. I don't look heavy. I look like that guy who could lose 20 lbs. But I want to be fairly fit. The reason that I just want to do cardio is because I don't want to burn myself out. A lot of people seem to do too much at once and give up.Find a way to get an exercise "high." You won't get one for about a month, then all of a sudden you will wake up in teh a.m. and say ... I need to exercise today. Ideally I want to lose 40lb's as quickly as possible. Learn how to eat sensibly and exercise in a normal fashion. Walking my dog is nice, but he is gettin older and we don't really walk.....we stroll. So that's where I'm at. But I will get in shape.I think improving your physical condition will be more personally satisfying than just dropping dropping extra weight.
EDIT: Oh, and eat fruits, fruits, fruits, and non-breaded meats and fish, and AVOID high-fructose corn syrup like the plague. (It's in EVERYTHING).

if your craving sweet, use honey rather than sugar. it's more natural and easier to breakdown.

This thread reminds me of Kevin James' Sweat the Small Stuff when he is talking about dieting. "Yea you know what I love? Taking weight loss advice from someone bigger than me.""You know what the trick is? Switching to sugarless gum."
