The Improtance Of Poker Lingo

Recommended Posts

There was a discussion in the General Strategy forum where somebody asked about the proper definition of the poker term "redraw". Here is the original topic. One of our respected moderators (who shall remain nameless to stir up pointless curiosity and gossip) made the following post:

This is such an inconsequential topic.Focus on the important stuff, TJ.
To say that I was both shocked and appalled would be an understatement. That a FCP moderator would stunt the growth of an aspiring young (or middle-aged... or old...) poker player is unthinkable. There is nothing more important than knowing the proper poker lingo! It is the first (vital) step in the progression of a poker player. If you don't know the lingo, then you can't possibly know how to play poker. You are a poker novice and an obvious target for all poker players that you will face.Understanding the lingo is imperative if you hope to have even a basic understanding of the game and being considered a poker amateur. If someone doesn't know that 2's are "deuces" and not "twos", then he is the sucker. Once I hear a guy say he hit a "set of twos" when he had [2 4] on a flop of [2 2 J], I know I have found the fish at the table! ;)Once you learn the lingo, the next step is to learn to build fancy chip towers. You must be able to build spiral towers and single chip towers stacked 100 chips high. These chip structures must look precariously stacked, yet somehow --illogically-- remain standing in spite of all the inevitable jostling of the table that your opponents will do to try and knock over your tower. Only then can you consider yourself to be an intermediate poker player. At this point, you only need to work part time, and can consider yourself to be a semi-pro.In order to progress from semi-pro to full-blown *professional poker player* you must learn all the neat chip tricks: the shuffle, the drop and twirl, the butterfly, etc. You must master these tricks so you can perform them at will, even whilst simultaneously posting your blind, talking to the player on your right and surreptitiously ogling the hot waitress (or waiter...) who is taking drink orders at the table next to you. At this point, you will be able to "talk the talk" and "walk the walk". Players will respect your poker understanding and fear your poker dexterity. The final step from poker professional and poker superstar can not be made by learning more poker knowledge or gaining some new skill. There is only one way to make this last leap, and it takes a lot of luck. Some people say that in order to make this last progression, you must win a major tournament or two. These people are as wrong as warm beer. Trying to become a poker superstar by winning major poker tournaments is like training poodles to be guard dogs: it might be possible --the result is a fluffy little Rotweiler clone-- but you will feel stupid while doing it and there are much easier ways, especially when you learn that your house already has an alarm installed... In order to become a poker superstar you must conspire to get yourself immortalized into the minds of the poker playing public. To do this, you must get TV time at a poker tournament where you are involved in a hand against an opponent who does something stupid and you mock him or her mercilessly with clever witty lines, "he called me with jack high!" and "He can't even spell POKER!". This requires a lot of luck because you need the tv cameras around *and* you need your opponent to do something stupid. It does not matter how perfectly you play "I can't believe I'm out... *begins crying* ...I played perfectly!", nor does it matter whether you make some hero call or brilliant bluff... No, you need your opponent's help here because it is his or her stupidity, together with your witty --but only slightly arrogant-- rant that will immortalize you in the minds of the poker playing public. Your clever rant --and how you wipe your feet on the dignity of your opponent-- will win you the adulation of the masses.------------I hope this clears up the question as to how to become a poker superstar. You can now see why it is so imperative that you properly learn the poker lingo. I know <ANONYMOUS MODERATOR> meant no harm by his comment, but everyone knows that the road to going broke is paved with good intentions. This tongue and cheek commentary was brought to you by the number '6668' and the letter 'Z'

This thread was presented to a small focal group (aka FCP General). The following conclusions were obtained:[] thread amused the general public[x] thread amused me[?] thread offends ZachTherefore by my requirement for a successful thread (thread must amuse me) I conclude[x] thread was successfulUnfortunately, I must also make the following two conclusions[x] Simple things amuse me[x] this thread is lame potatoesNevertheless, I know from previous evidence, that some FCPers (aside from myself) are amused by lame potatoes. We have established:1) This thread is lame potatoes2) Troyomac likes lame potatoesTherefore we can conclude:Troyomac will like this thread.
