Even though Lombardi does not have insurance, still a very good trade for the Leafs. When I heard it on FAN590, I thought what just happen?

Is it a coincidence that every good team in the league follows the "fancy video game stat Geek" model of thinking? and NHL seasons aren't 68 games long, unfortunately.

I had this thought process of blasting into you, getting all mad and belligerent, and then I realized, whats the point. I don't know you, I don't really know what makes you tick, and at the end of the

I guess I'll disclaim this by saying I'm a huge Sundin fan. He's probably my favourite player of all time.   First: Nobody knows exactly what happened. The Leafs couldn't work out a trade with a pla

If Lombardi can't play, he can just go on LTIR, no?regardless, even if Franson was signed for 2 years at 4.3 Million, I'd still love this trade for the Leafs.I woke up with a terrible hangover yesterday, and when I looked at the TSN text that anounced this trade, I didn't think it was real. This trade is like the Beauchemin one. It's a great trade regardless, but if Lupul (Lombardi) actually contibutes anything, it becomes a home run.

Im thinking Burke still plans on moving a defenceman to fit Komisarek into the lineup. (Unfortunately)
i think there is a lot of options with Komisarek. If we forget about his salary he isnt that bad a dman if you play him 10-12 minutes a game..He cant be in your top 4 though. If you can trade Jason Blake,Vesa Toskala and Brett fricking Lebda I think you can dump Komisarek.Lot of teams need to get to the floor and he might be a candidate.OR he is looking to make a big trade by involving Aulie and/or Gunnar then he would need Komi to play a bigger role, i think thats the scenario you touch one.I could be wrong but there is no way he is trading Schenn..Unless its to acquire a superstar and i dont see that happening anytime soon.Really excited about our top 4 of Phaneuf,Schenn,Liles and Franson..Franson put up 29 points last year playing i believe about 15 min a game. If we give him top pp time and play him 20 plus minutes he can be a 50 pt dman..Hmm who else got 50 pts last year? A guy the Sabres committed to 10 years for..HMM

Love how Franson called his uncle 1st about the trade before his parents. Why? His uncle is a huge Leafs fan.
yes he has a lot of family in the Toronto area..I really cant believe this trade still..Brett Lebda and an AHLer for a top 4 dman who is huge and is offensive..We win this trade with Lombardi not playing another game..If someone Lombardi plays and regains his old self this could be one of the greatest trades Burke has made...

Macarthur has till 5pm to file for arbitration..I have a feeling if we go to arbitration the number will be pretty big.Last year the arbitrator ruled for $2.4 million before his career year, with the escalation of salaries he will definetely in the $3.5 million range.Leafs still have $10.5 million in cap room needing to sign Schenn,Bozak and Macarthur. Should be enough to fit them in.

No, you dominate this trade with Lombardi not playing another game. "Win" doesn't say it. Nashville needs help, either a deep pockets new owner or a move to a better market, or both...having to make that trade because you can't afford to real-money pay Lombardi to potentially be on LTIR is just embarrassing. No NHL club should ever have to lose a trade that horribly because of team finances.

*Edit* OMFG...I thought $4.75 million was the total contract value over two years...they actually gave Timmy a RAISE and a 2-year $9.5 million deal. I take it back, Toronto got hosed BAD.
Tim Connolly turned 30 this year, and has never scored 20 goals in a year. For reference purposes, Ville Leino scored 19 last year, which is more than Connolly has ever scored.I know he's been hurt, blah blah, but that is pretty damning. I'm glad to hear he is a great PK guy - I didn't know that. John Madden is too, and would have cost millions less.I don't really hate it - the Leafs have the money, and there isn't that much to spend it on. It's a short deal. But when Marty Reasoner, Eric Belanger and John Madden are available for less than $1.5M/year, I don't see why you have to pay Connolly $5M.
I wouldn't mind the Leafs leaving some cap space - use it mid-season to pick up overpaid players other teams are desparate to get rid of like Giguere.
To TOR:Cody FransonMatthew Lombardi4th 2013 (if Lombardi doesn't play 60 games over next two seasons)To NSH:Brett LebdaRobert Slaney4th 2013 (if Lombardi plays 60 games over next two seasons)
Woot! More deals like this, plzkthx.Another reason Connolly and Lombardi are great adds for the Leafs is the irrelevancy of the dollars. We can always bury Lombardi, Connolly, Komisarek, Finger, etc, if we need to. We might pay $80M in salaries, but be ok under the cap. Which is exactly what the Leafs should be doing to leverage their financial situation within a salary cap. Good for them.

You are absolutely correct..The key with Connolly is the term...2 years isnt a big risk at all..I have been saying this for years that a team like Nashville shouldnt be in the NHL..WHY? Because they cant compete with Toronto because they dont have the resources..The Salary Cap is not a huge factor as Nashville wont even come close to spending to the cap and they have internal budget concerns that force them to make these sort of trades..We love it..Lets do more...

I've refrained from taking the bait for a little while now, but I just have to ask what you mean when you say a team like Nashville shouldn't be in the NHL because they can't compete with the Leafs?Nashville finished with 14 more points than the Leafs last season and made it to the second round of the playoffs while Toronto...well, you know.

Because they still believe he can be counted on to provide offense...and he can't. He's got a million dollar set of hands and a $4.95 brain telling them what to do...that's great for the penalty kill because he's quick with the stick and his reactions are great (that's why he was always on our #1 PK and would often play the entirety of 5 on 3's) but you'll very quickly grow weary of watching him turn the puck over on the rush, on the attack, in his own end...he's a turnover maniac who won't shoot but still thinks he can dangle like it's 2006 and no one knows how to defend against it. I would have very gladly seen Buffalo pay him $4.5 million TOTAL over two years to be the 3rd line center and PK specialist (Madden-style), but $9.5 over two years is straight failboat, you'll never get that value from Timmy. Tell me I'm wrong because he'll be playing with Kessel and whoever now...he couldn't produce points with Vanek, Stafford, Ennis, Pominville or anyone else. He's not an offensive center anymore.

I should of said cant compete with the Leafs financially...With them having to spend to the cap floor , they are forced to trade away talent as they cant afford to spend real dollars. They cant keep Lombardi's contract if they need to dish out money to Weber..I love it as if this trend continues you will see teams like Nashville not competitive on the ice as well..

Not a big fan of the Connolly signing but the Leafs can afford it and I cant see them being in too much cap trouble the next 2 years anyway. Im sure if they were willing to go for a 5 year deal or something along those lines they could of had him signed for $1 million less per year but I would much rather have the shorter term deal. Having said that looking ahead to next year guys like Kulemin, Aulie, Franson and Grabovski are all gonna be free agents looking for big raises and thats when they might be regretting having to overpay for guys like Connolly and Lombardi.

I am hoping that the big money is not an indicator that the Leafs consider him more than a stretch #2C or easy #3C and big-time PK guy. Given the Leafs's PK struggles, I hope they were willing to overpay for that.I also hope the media doesn't carve up Burke for overpaying for a 2nd-3rd line centre who will not be a scorer (despite having that reputation) but still contributing. I hope that they understand the free agent market, and don't pretend that the big contract means he "should" score and that he is failing if not.I expect to be wrong!

Burke doesnt give a shit about the media and i think we will see that more and more...People talk about not having a true 1c..So what, we probably have 3 very good 2nd line centres...Which is good...We also have two wingers that are very young and scored 30 goals, a defensive corp that can compete with the top ones in the league..Sure we have question marks, but if we look at the roster two and a half years ago to now, WOW what an improvement.Burke got rid of immovable contracts, and he isnt one to fall in love with a mistake..He makes a mistake and fixes it...ie Lebda and Beauchemin..Soon to be Komisarek.

agree, agree...and whats more, the farm is drastically better too. Definite trunaround by the looks of it, but lets see if it plays out on the ice.

Lets hope so..Sure Reimer looked amazing but what if he falters and has a sophomore jinx? Which Phaneuf do we get? Can Grabovski and Kulemin repeat career years? All teams have question marks...But going back and reading some of my posts defending Jason Blake and Matt Stajan..LOL...

RealKyper Nick Kypreos#NHL signing. #Leafs lock up Clarke Mac Arthur. A 2 year deal believed to be worth 6.5M.
HA..Beat you by a minute that time..In the other thread.I think this is a fair deal...Now we just need to sign Schenn and Bozak..I am not worried about those two..Macarthur was the big one.

I hope Bozak improves to where I thought he'd be. He had some moments last year, but never really found his stride. I think this guy will be good...maybe this is the year?As for Phaneuf, it would be great to get a mean and healthy Dion, but this may not be required if Schenn keeps improving the way he's been going. Last year was a great effort and he has the size to be imposing at both ends of the ice.
