digitalmonkey 929
i wouldn't label cheechoo a 50-goal 90-point player...maybe it was just the opposite of a slump
MapleLeafpoker 1,462
Others can shed more light on this, but I have always been a firm believer that whats in between their ears is a big reason why some guys make it, and successfully, in the NHL, and while some others with just as much talent dont. And in that vain, I think Cheechoo's magical season/season+half, was the culmination of everything going right, and his confidence just at an all time high. Now, he probably feels like he cant do anything right, and that his talent might not be there after all. He looks lost out there, total deer in the headlights. I dont think he can regain that confidence at this point. On another point, I think Burke would probably prefer to save his cap space for another Phaneuf type deal, or at the very least, one where another team tries to get rid of salary, and gives a good draft pick to do it. I like the reclamation projects idea as a theory, but I dont see it for a guy like Cheechoo in a city like Toronto. Pittsburgh? On a line with Malkin/Crosby might be his last shot at success. I would think there would be some kind of a Rob Brown/Kevin Stevens effect for SOMEBODY but I guess the game is so different these days that there's no such thing as carrying a player along anymore. gruven 530
I thought steroids were basically useless to hockey players, since it's more of a finesse game than a power game?Bryan Berard is still the only hockey player I've ever heard of who was busted for taking them. I can definitely see blood doping (Tour de France style) being an issue in the NHL, for guys needing to keep their stamina and oxygen levels peaked, but I wouldn't think roids would do much for a players game.Steroids are far from unknown in the NHL..... while not rampant like they were in the NFL or International Sports, they still exist. Is it because a lot of their success is on that PP? I dont know that it is, just guessing. Also, I dont think Crosby/Malkin have had a lot of pure finishers on their lines, at least that I can think of offhand. Guerin is the closest thing I can think of, and he is past his prime.

The PP has been horrid this season, and last year.

Lately, the PP points seem to be coming along a bit better, but it was hard to get much worse. I don't have numbers in-hand to back this up, but I remember seeing stats and hearing the analysts talk about how Crosby/Malkin would be doing so much better if their PP was even average. gruven 530
I heard or read this idea somewhere today, and I thought it was a valid point: While he isn't eligible, there is no candidate more deserving of a Masterton nomination on the Leafs than Brian Burke...'The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey'
