Etiquette - Poker Foe In The Boardroom

Recommended Posts

Recently, I had someone with whom I've played many hours of poker at the local casino show up at a business meeting. We exchanged cards and both seemed to decide simultaneously to pretend we hadn't met. In truth, I didn't know his last name until I read it on his card.I'm not shy about poker - everyone knows I play. I don't know why, but the idea of saying "Oh, I know Gary, we play poker together," didn't seem right, and Gary seemed to draw the same conclusion. Even in my enlightened state, even with poker being pretty "cool" right now, I still attach a bit of stigma to the undertaking.Has it happened to you?

lolz @ "office politics".I think I'd rather kill myself than prance around all day worrying about what a bunch of middle-management douchebags in cheap ties think of what I choose to do with my own life. I will never understand how people can voluntarily subject themselves to that crap for one single second god forbid years upon years..

Um, get married, buy a house, have kids, let your wife stay home for a few years. You will understand.

I'm a big fan of keeping my personal and professional lives separate. You each did the other the courtesy of not making a decision about violating that principle for the other person. Good instinct, I'd say.

Yeh, I can see how having kids would be great.... I guess I'm just too much of a "hookers and blow" kinda guy.Maybe I'll give it up when I'm sixty and go out and buy one of those girls from the Ukraine to settle down with.

22??wtf!? i been drinkin and smoking and experimenting since i was 13, but i still cant get enough.honestly 22? I'm with scram, to each his own, but i personally wanna live this life to its fullest.I'll bring another life into the world when i can appreciate it, i it happened to me, obv i'd say my son/daughter is my life, but in all honesty, I'm my life. and until science or religion can prove their case 100%, i'l stick with this one crazy life i got now, and try and make the most of it while i'm young

I find great humor in listening to those who equate getting married, having children, settling down as having a negative effect on ones nightlife, poker life, etc.It takes some time and, yes, a certain amount of sobriety, but there CAN be a great balance of these elements - in moderation of course.I married at 20, had two beautiful daughters by 29. My wife enjoys my poker life as she has seen a drastic leveling off of moodiness since I always have a place to play (online or B&M) when I need to play and relax. When the daughters would bring home boyfriends, the conversation would often turn to poker. What an amazing read you can get on a daughter's potential boyfriend through some seemingly innocuous chat - you don't have to be Carro to pick up on tells from an over-sexed 16-year-old male!!I knew I had achieved greatness when my younger daughter asked for the Hoyle Casino DVD computer game for her 12th birthday. She enjoys the horseracing and during the past 5 years has taught herself Hold em and could probably sit at my monthly home game if she desired - she still can't beat her old man but that day will come.My wife and I enjoyed Vegas for the first time this year - she can't wait to go back. In another year, I will be able to "legally" have a beer with the older daughter. It is perspective (and age) that some of these "young whipper-snappers" need. They have no idea that they CAN find happiness/balance in their free spirit life AND with some of the more traditional pursuits such as marriage, children, outrageous mortgages, board rooms, etc.Cheers!!

Best part of my life is my Best Friend/Wife......my Dogs too......Oh yeah, my buddies with whom I've visited Vegas......and playing in two bands - often closing bars in the middle of the week......and, yes a very successful professional career (I've been to board meetings)......and the pride of home ownership and being an active part of my community......and being a winning Poker player......and tooling around in my Jeep......and my family......and international travel whenever I can find the time......yeah, my live got pretty empty when I got married 17 years ago.

I'm glad the hijack took such an uplifting turn. A more interesting topic than the one I started, that's for sure.If you're enjoying your life, and happy with the choices you've made, there is no judgment from me.
