Yes. I thought Sin City was "okay" but loved 300.
That's a good sign. I saw Sin City for free and didn't feel that I got my money's worth. 300's trailers have my interest, but I have a nagging fear.

I was very hot and cold on SIn City.. I thought it was ambitious, and visually stunning, but in some ways I thought it fell flat.300, on the other hand, hit the ball out the park

Just go into it expecting violence porn and you'll come out completely satisfied. Go into it like a jewbag expecting historical accuracy, or a plot, or anything of that nature - then you get what you deserve. It's violence porn done very well, awesome style.

I thought the opposite. I thought Sin City was much more interesting in that it actually had a plot. I found 300 to be just, well, boring. We get it, the movie consists of people yelling "SPARTA!!!" really loud and then stabbing a bunch of people. The movie was the same thing for nearly two hours with some worthless plot about the Sparta Senate and the king's wife mixed in. Basically, it was no more than watching a videogame, but with a worse plot. If I wanted to watch some guy kill a bunch of other guys in CGI with a spear or something, I'd play God of War for the PS2. Sin City, on the other hand, had a coolness and complexity that 300 lacked. I don't know, I'm all for violence and fighting in movies, but it has to be done in a particular way for it to work. It has to be driven by the plot and it has to have a certain gravity to it. For me, it's never entertaining to watch people fight when there's no real sense of pain or struggle or when there's no way that one side can win or there's no overall goal. It's like that fight in the Matrix: Reloaded where Neo fights many Agent Smiths. You never get the feeling that one side can actually hurt the other, so they just throw each other around for a while and then fly away. It was the same in 300. The Spartans simply mow down their enemies effortlessly. The exceptions are when the one guy's son is killed, which you could see coming about three miles away, and when they are all killed, which again was inevitable. So, in the end, for me 300 was just a bunch of boring videogame fighting, and the whole time watching it I kept asking myself when it would be over.

To take the metaphor way to far, the violence in this movie was sex where the two people simply remain in one position, moving fast and mechanically. There's no real passion or intrigue, and there's no sense that either party is actually enjoying it. It's robotic. There's no connection between the lovers and therefore no real gravity to the sex. In the end, 300 left me unsatisfied.

I understand what your saying, but for me and everyone I've talked to that liked it aren't as worried about the story in 300 because we know it already. Most of us read about it in history class at some point, we know the context of the battle and don't need the film to spell that out. To put in a lot of the surrounding story for the the small part of that war which the film covers would have made the movie ridiculously long and drawn out... I'm fairly certain that's not what they were going for. Also the story to a video game just makes me think you have never played anything more complicated than a Pac-man. There are game companies out there putting out software with stories that put 95% of movies to shame.

Exactly. I was saying that I know videogames that have more entertaining action and WAAAAY better stories than this movie. That's why I was bored. I would rather play a videogame than watch a videogame, so why would I enjoy watching this movie when I can play God of War or something, which is basically what this movie wanted to be.

Maybe I'm easy to affect, but I certainly felt sympathy for the pain of several characters. I'm not saying I cried, but I made sad frowny faces.

1.You were expecting a war movie... have you lived in a cave the last 6 months? Did you miss the previews completely? Have you never heard of Frank Miller? Do you know what a graphic novel is? Do you realize this is a movie version of a graphic novel? I think I already know the answers to these questions...If you want some type of historically accurate version of the Battle of Thermopylae I hear the History Channel just put one out.2.There isn't one real death??? Are you serious? Is every single death in a battle where the casualties can't be counted supposed to have a deep meaning?3.As mentioned earlier the voiceover was Dilios recounting the parts of the battle he was involved in as well as the story of Leonidas. It was being told to an army about to engage the Persians in battle again after the death of their king. There is a reason you were the only one laughing. As far as them prancing around in their underwear, they didn't exactly wear full suits of armor back then, I suppose you prefer the alternative where they didn't wear underwear at all?Yay! look at the internet cool guy with Chuck Norris references, you win, game over.... your right this movie sucked.4.You can't be serious, how was any of it a joke? This probably goes back to you not understanding the point of the narrator and maybe you missed the last 5 minutes of the movie that sort of tied that all together. 5.Do you go to movies for entertainment or history lessons, because if I wanted a history lesson there are other resources for that. Oddly enough, some of the stupid one liners you are making fun of are actually historically accurate quotes. The results are also historically accurate, what the graphic novel and the subsequent movie are doing is making an entertaining spectacle of the less known details of the battle and some of the surrounding events.
1.Actually I didnt see the previews since I dont have a TV right now. Yes, I knew it was a graphic novel, but being a graphic novel doesnt mean the characters have to be caricatures of anything real. I have heard of Frank Miller- I liked Sin City much more than 300 which is partly why I am disappointed. 2.

Astinos was the only one who might even come close to qualifying, but since everything else was so cartoonish it was just too much to suddenly start caring about that either. It didn't help that he got his head lopped off like so many other of the "stage prop" fighters.

All the deaths set the tone for was the message that none of the deaths meant anything since this wasnt a real war, but just an artistic exercise designed to get people to pay for a movie ticket.3.I can't help it if nobody else understands the humor of practically shouting extremely stereotypical phrases in an overly emotional way.Yay! look at the internet cool guy calling me gay because I dont enjoy looking at half-naked guys for 2 hours. You should become a psychologist.4.It was all a joke. Everything was so trite and overdone that it easily crossed the line from a potential tragedy/triumph of the human spirit to just a cartoon set up to display the cool visual effects and all of the actors' work on their ab-loungers. I guess that I tend to think that it is inherently disrespectful to trivialize war and killing like this movie did. Even if it isnt, 300 is still nothing more than the latest disposable and eminently meaningless action/violence movie to get produced. I guess it was a bonus that it happened to be funnier than usual, albeit unintentionally. 5.You seem to really want me to care about the historicism of the movie when I don't mention it once in my review. This and other things give me the impression that you didn't really read what I had to say, or that we just live in such different universes that communication is unlikely. Also, you seem to be unnaturally hostile to someone having a different opinion about a movie. Is it still bothering you that I was right(and then some) about the Big Ten being overrated this year? I can't remember ever talking to you about anything else.

Ummm ok...

My point about parts of it being historically accurate was that some of the phrases you are laughing at are direct quotes from the battle. For all the ripping on it you did of it being cartoonish (which it was supposed to be) I kind of thought maybe you missed that it wasn't entirely fictional. Your still using Chuck Norris jokes when they were played out years ago, obviously I'm calling out your sense of humor a little sinc eyou admit you were the only one laughing and I don't recall anyone I saw it with laughing... but to each his own.I would really like to read your review of Sin City, because if you want to compare films Sin City is far more guilty of the ridiculous overuse of silly violence than 300 is. Dragging peoples faces on streets while driving, cannibalism with trophy heads of the victims etc etc...

I'm just amazed at some of the stuff you write on here... I forgot that was you who was spouting all that Pac-10 superiority crap till you brought it up.I still fail to see how you think the PAC-10 is better when your there best team only beat the second best team in the Big-10 in a home game two months after the season was over. Anyone with a ounce of common sense knows that the bowl system is a joke for a dozen reasons, but that has nothing to do with this thread. I don't know where you get the hostility vibe from, if anything I was laughing while writing my response to you.

Finally saw 300.Since all the Sin City comparisons are going on, I'll just say this....I absolutely Love Sin City.... but I thoroughly enjoyed 300. But prefer SC. Thought 300 was great, and watched the history channel special a few nights later and it was very cool to see how much of it was accurate. (as accurate as thousands of years old recounts can be.)

I assume the guy with giant blades for hands may not have been 100% accurate. In reality, it is impossible to know whether or not he really had nipple rings.

Its a movie you really should have seen on the big screen.
i completely agree, i saw this movie twice on the big screen and will probably watch it today as well. I loved this movie, i just want to walk around with a shield and a spear all day and just fight random people.
