opinions on how to play a j offsuit??

Recommended Posts

OK . . . this is a hand I have trouble with. I don't know why, but I never seem to play it just right.Let's start the debate. The game is NL Holdem', 10 person table (ring game). Tell me how you play A J offsuit in early position, middle position and late position. This is obiovusly going to be a little general since I can't go into to detail about everyone's chip stacks, betting patterns, table consistency, etc. So just let me know your rule of thumb for playing this hand in each position. For this scenario let's say there are no raises or just a minimum raise to you.

For a very general question here is my Very General response..Raise with ace jack off,or call a small raise.. if i'm short stacked and the time is right.. i'd push all in.I wouldnt bet big.., and i wouldnt mind a simple check if i got this hand in BB and no raise occured

yup, AJo is a horror show.EP - very much depends on the table. I mostly raise with it in MP/LP in an unraised pot as I have a high chance of having the best hand, and I'll certainly raise it against a min-raiser if I have position (ugh minimum raising). I don't like calling very much - with this hand I want to have a good idea of the strength of my opponent's holding

shorthanded against random hands, this hand does well (e.g. on the button for a blind steal, or in a short-handed game, etc.). but when you're shorthanded or heads-up against hands that are probably strong, this hand sucks. that means that if someone raises anywhere, and it's to you anywhere, fold AJ. why? because you'll only get action when you're beat, even if an A flops.because of this, i would raise anywhere in an unraised pot with AJ, but fold to a reraise probably. i would never play this hand facing a raise. i would still prefer to thin the field a little, even in the BB, but don't overvalue this hand in NL. play it carefully.by the way, Royal_Tour, your avatar is hot (i might even go so far as to say that it beats MarionSauce)... is that actually you?aseem

early pos: callmiddle to late: depending on the number of people in raise - call. If you have 2-3 callers behind you usually call, but if there is one caller or none definately a raise.

This is the worst strategy I've heard.AJ is a fold in nearly every situation at a table.

I dunno if it is ever really right to call a raise with A-Joff.

Your right., but if its early in the game, and its a small raise from early position., you might be up against ace, 10...??.. But i would fold to a re-raise or large bet for sure

Meh, it'd have to be a pretty loose game for me to call a raise with A-Joff and hope the other guy had A-10. There's just too many ways I'm behind. Besides, even if a guy raises every hand, that doesn't mean he never gets them. I'd hate to lower my standards to calling a raise with A-Joff only to find that this time the guy had a real hand.

Never do you call a raise with aj off.You hardly ever raise with aj off.AJ off is a horrible hand. AQ is a good raising or limping hand, but you don't call nice sized raises with it either. These hands are called girl hands...they look pretty, but get you into financial trouble.

as much as i would like to agree with this.. I can't. playing limit at casino's., i'll always pay to see a flop with ace jack, it pays off

The table and limits are really pertinent to the answering of this question. Maybe I'm a dumbass and this is a leak, but I play at the .5/.10 tables right now, and I've seen T9o raised with a ferocious frequency at some tables. Personally, I usually limp in unless someone is representing a pretty strong hand. Now, yes, I know, this happens next to never, but coincidentally I limped in with AJo today and the flop came AJJ. Funny thing is, I actually got action.

AQ is a good raising or limping hand, but you don't call nice sized raises with it either.I don't usually have a problem with being the aggressor with A-Joff because I don't always need to hit my hand to win the pot. I definitely wouldn't play it against players that were equal to me or better than me. Since I play at lower limits, that usually isn't a problem, though. These hands are called girl hands...they look pretty, but get you into financial trouble.Hahahaha. Did you make that up, or are they really called that?

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS GOOD AND HOLY.....FOLD A J OFFSUIT. UNLESS YOU CAN GET A FREE LOOK FROM THE BB; THEN YOU SHOULD FOLD IF THE FLOP DOES NOT COME AAA.

I have to agree that you need to be very careful with A-J. It will get you into trouble more times than it will win you a big pot. The most aggresive you should be with it is from late position against the blinds.PS. My avatar is my girlfriend too
