My speculative sense of this (not informed by any insider info) is that it's a big customer acquisition push for MANSION. It's obviously a promo that's going to generate a ton of buzz and new customers for them and as a relatively new entrant in the poker market especially they really need a lot of players to catch up to the Partys and Paradises of the world. MANSION has deep pockets. Keep in mind that they also paid 100M GBP to sponsor a major English soccer team and $60M to Fox to sponsor the Poker Dome TV series. So these guys aren't messing around. And if they need to pay $500 per to acquire new customers they're probably willing to do it. I think they also figure that while some players will certainly make the Steelers bet and then leave others will choose to do all of their NFL wagering at MANSION. Say you put in the $1100 and the Steelers cover; now you have $2100 there. While some people will take the money and run I'm sure a lot of others will decide to keep their $1000 profit and use it to bankroll a season's worth of betting and beyond. Also keep in mind that in order to deposit $1100 you have to be a reasonably well-bankrolled individual so MANSION is also taking aim at a juicy part of the market here. Paying $500 to acquire a guy who is gonna deposit $1100 to start may not be a bad move. It's a big bet on MANSION's part, but it's going to create a lot of buzz and my personal belief is that it's legit. MANSION's a big firm with a lot of reputation at stake and not covering a promo like this would be disastrous (and pretty unthinkable) for any reputable firm. Just my 2 cents...
