is pl omaha a profitable game?

Recommended Posts

I occasionally play some PLO on FCP and find i win for a bit then the wild reraises start and the suckouts soon follow. Does this game actually have enough stability to be profitable? Ex. The redraws in this game are always a big part of the game and quite often get there for someone so this game seems to be very volatile at almost any low to medium limits. I dont think id have the balls to play this at a high level. i have been known to play 10/10 NL Hold em but am rather cautious about playign .25/.25 PLO.Thoughts?

Yes, PLO is very profitable. What you need to understand is often the best hand is a 2-1 dog. Think about all the draws your opponent may have and think of all the made hands they could have. I'll take the nut flush draw with a 20 way straight draw any day of the week over a set. Edges are alot smaller then in no limit hold'em, but the pots are bigger more often, making pot limit omaha the most profitable game out there in my opinion. Maybe PLO8 is, but I don't have the experience to know.

In order for there to be any winners, there must be a loser. Find the loser(s), and you will become a winner. 8) Seriously though, buddy list this guy on FCP called Rocketwad0. He's been known to lose countless sums of money in PLO and PLO8. :club:

Stability isn't a requirement for being profitable at all.

my results over the past 6 months playing 80% 25 and 50 dollar games says yes, PLO is profittable. i haven't played a holdem cash game since i started PLO'ing
AGREED!!!!! I play hold em "for fun" now. PLO makes the bankroll grow! Are there more suckouts? Yes, but they are MORE than offset by the more frequent chasers. You can also limit the suckouts by betting the pot with anything, but the pure nuts, or close to it. Set = bet the pot, str = bet the pot. Many people don't seem to understand that several small pots won are the way to go. Many "suckouts" come from slow playing to increase the pot size and giving someone proper odds to call.

PLO is a great game. The key is understanding how powerful your hand is, and understanding what kind of hands can develop into better hands than what you have. For example if you have J876 in the Big Blind and the flop is J88. Your hand is almost certainly good at the moment but you have to be aware that any King,Queen or Ace is a card that could have you drawing to one card. Now you realize that your hand is not safe and you should bet it but be happy to keep the pot relatively small. The key is to bet the pot when you have the best hand/draw and it will force the weak draws out. You will have to gamble to win in PLO.
