hey Scanner,Actually God did provide proof of His existence inthe form of a man, Jesus Christ. I understand that your response is probably, that Jesus is not proof of anything, Jesus was just another man. I offer this: Jesus called himself God several times. This is the reason that the Saducy wanted him executed. It was heresy, punishable by death. Unforntuanately, Rome had taken the right to determine life and death cases away from the Jewish leadership and this is why Pilate had to make the final call. The fact that Jesus called himself God, not a God but the God, is evidenced by Josephus. This is an extrabiblical source by the way, written by a Jew who did not believe that Christ was the Messiah, God incarnate. The real proof is in the pudding though, the ressurection. What happened to Christ's body?? The believers could not have taken it, as it was guarded by at least 64 Roman soldiers, ordered to kill. It wouldn't have been taken by Pilate, as evidenced by the fact that he did not produce the body in order to shut down the uprising of believers, and consequently the public upheaval of Jersaelum. It was Pilate's best interest to stop this mob like behavior after the death and ressurection because he was not in good favor with the czar of the Roman empire, and his own life was at stake because of it. Therefore, what happened to the body??? If you can prove that the body was not ressurected, and that the whole thing was a hoax, I might denounce my belief in God. I know that you cannot do that however. Some great minds have tried and failed and became belivers instead....
*********************************************Wow...I practically believe you were there!! For starters...how do we know for sure that the body was there to begin with?? :club:
Basically where I was going...where did the Queen Mary go when David Copperfield made it disappear? Even if the events as described in the resurrection are factual, reporting of those events was made by fallible (and foolable) human beings. To take those reports as "evidence" of anyhing requires....faith.

i was trying to and succeeded in proving that by our measurements, we spent two minutes on earth and two minutes at a slightly greater relative speed. the two minutes at greater speed were, indeed, exactly two minutes to us, as were the two minutes on earth. they do not, however equal four minutes when added together.
As long as they are added in the same frame of reference, they do always equal 4.

hi lois & mattnxtc. don't you guys ever get tired of always being right?
If you think that this statement only applies to these 2 people, you haven't been reading this board at all.
nobody else uses so many words to say so little as those two :club:

Just because linguistically speaking words seem random, does not mean their meaning is random. If there were some intelligent species on the other end of the universe(not that I believe that), I am pretty sure they would believe that 2 + 2 = 4, not in those exact words, but they would have a proof similar to ours. I do not think they would also have a book that was similar to the bible, and claimed a man died for the sins of all.I just happen to think that math can be described as universal. The Christian bible, I am not so sure.
This is an old philsophical axiom..Leibniz gives an example of the sum of angles in a triangle being 180 deg's.this is obviously not depended on any labelling that we as humans give to the propotion of distance between said angles, but is a logical truth that must exist in abstract form, human intepretation not withstanding. Therefore, regardless of definitions that we as finite beings place upon objects, or any other labelling process; even infinite beings have to observe the logical structure of the universe. The example of the triangle would clearly hold true in any universe. Thus laws of logic are universal
Not true. The sum of the angles of a triangle only equal 180 degrees in a Euclidean ("flat") space, as we perceive flat. On a curved surface (as we perceive curved) the sum of the angles of a triangle is greater than 180 degrees. If another universe is intrinsically non-Euclidean (or even ours if it is only approximately Euclidean) then the precise sum of the angles will not be 180 degrees.

There is nothing immature about it. I'm also not the only one who has made this type of comment about what you're saying. Even people on the God side of the discussion say that you're misrepresenting everything.
Hi um no. I have not misrepresented anything and I have attempted to answer every question I have seen. The only person I have seen that has had a problem with anyting I have said is Lois. The facts on Lois are well known. He is not a christian, He admits he isnt a christian, and a lot of what he says does not have biblical backing. He makes assertions without using context. So if he is the one u are using to say i misrepresent then you need to rethink it.
You are picking and choosing to argue about things that you think you can prove, whether or not they even apply to the argument. How can you say that we need faith to believe that scientific theories are correct? On top of that, how can you claim that science could prove whether the bible is real or not. Don't you think someone would have done that by now?
again. i have yet to pick and choose anything I have simply givin an answer to questions that have been posed. If i have missed one or not answered one it is b/c someone else answered it or i missed it. I have not avoided any question. Again I was attempting only to show that we believe things about science not b/c we have any true knowledge of it but b/c others say that they are true. That is all I was tryin to say about faith. Everyday you rely on faith whether you want to admit it or not. We could not function if we didnt rely on faith. U are still missing the point on the science though. What i said was that you could use the scientific method in ur "bible experiment" and using those guidelines u could go about testing the bible.
Further, the bible does not stand on it's own. It has people all over the world making up excuses for it's inconsistencies. Where exactly is it standing on it's own against critisism? There are lots of critics who make a lot of good points, but there are also a lot of people on the other side making up excuses every time something comes along. Why should we trust the excuses any more than we do the original document? I have no idea. But it's far from standing on it's own.
making up excuses for the bible? no that is not correct. What is often the case is that somebody picks up a bible and starts reading. They come to a verse or 2 that seem to contradict and they scream that the bible is wrong. Dont believe me? A prime example is the mormon religion. It claims to be a christian organization but a close look reveals that it isnt close. Why? well for one they read the bible and took its words out of context and came up with thier own ideas!!! A quick example is if somebody came up to u today and said that they played a session today of poker and aces lost every time and a 27o boated 3 times. So they assert that poker is all luck. Well they have made a claim and they have their "evidence" of a session that would tend to agree with thier claim. Yet u and i both know that poker involves skill and mathematics and so you would therefore go and show him where he is mistaken in his thinking wouldnt u? Its the exact same thing. Somebody reads the bible. Sees a "contradiction" and goes to a pastor/ biblical scholar who has the knowledge to provide an answer with backing to prove it.
hi lois & mattnxtc. don't you guys ever get tired of always being right?
Hi crow im surprised it took u this long to come in. If you notice I didnt start this thread and in fact didnt come in until around the 3 or 4th page. But yes, if someone is going to make claims about the bible and what not then why wouldnt I attempt to clear up some misconceptions? I would rather these threads not go on but they do and I think you will agree that both sides deserve representation
See, this is exactly what I'm talking about. You talk and talk and talk, and you never say anything relevant. Just keep saying how right you are. Your examples are just complete drivel. I really don't see anything you're saying that makes any sense whatsoever.Allow me to demonstrate:"making up excuses for the bible? no that is not correct. What is often the case is that somebody picks up a bible and starts reading. They come to a verse or 2 that seem to contradict and they scream that the bible is wrong. Dont believe me? A prime example is the mormon religion. It claims to be a christian organization but a close look reveals that it isnt close. Why? well for one they read the bible and took its words out of context and came up with thier own ideas!!!"You say that a prime example of people saying the bible is wrong, but it not being true... Is the mormons. Now here you follow that statement with a story about something completely different. What does them having their own religion have to do with whether or not they think the bible is true or not? You tried to twist what I was saying into something you thought was correct, yet you didn't even address the question I posed in your supposed explanation. You just took some previous knowledge you had, and tried to fit it into something I said, so you can again try to look like you know something.Seriously, just stop, go find another discussion, because you're making everyone more stupid by reading all of this.

These are both quotes by lois. One in this thread the other in off topic...Does anybody else see the contradiction that exists?

What is that exactly? Matt, you stand for nothing. NOTHING. I am a christian, and have said that before
And by the way you apparently have not read alot of my posts- I never claimed to be a christian, I have always maintained that because of my gambling ways I cannot conform to what God wants- in order to get to heaven I will need to quit poker, that is just how I see it
O.K., Matt likes to talk alot but never really backs anything up, and generally he is as wishy washy as you can get without being a spineless pile of Jello. Seriously, this guy actually said that as Christians we are supposed to on some level realize we could be wrong and that there is no God.
problem is just as in off topic if it is a biblical matter I have supported my assertions with multiple bible verses. It is in fact you who have not done that. But eh...
What kind of Christian is that exactly? " Uh, God, I believe in you at this point but I will harbor this thought...I could change my mind. Sorry, my man, philosophy says it's gotts be this way
Can somebody please explain Epistemology or Philosophy of knowledge to Lois. he doesnt seem to comprehend it and he isnt going to take my word for it.
What is that exactly? Matt, you stand for nothing. NOTHING
I have made it very clear what i stand for. I have never hidden anything from anybody and I have always made my points clear.
I am a christian, and have said that before- I just haven't been going to church because I do not beleive the life that I am leading is right right now, and I don't feel like bringing my sin around the people of God. If I died today, I would go to hell. Period. I don't like it, but it is true.
This would also disagree with the bible though it is a bit more controversial (see calvinism to see why) but biblically I can again show that if you were a true christian at one point then you have eternal security. I know u wont believe me but well again i stick to the bible on these matters.
It's not hard to argue the bible against somebody as simple as you, and as far as out of context? NEVER, not once, the opposite is true. The only way you could possibly believe the way you do is if you grossly, big drumroll please, TAKE EVERYTHING OUT OF CONTEXT. Seriously, though, why in the world would I actually give any religous man who can't even grasp the absolute exsistence of God himself the time of day? Truly, that would be an excercise in futility.
If by going out of context you mean going to the greek, Lookin at all historical information, lookin at the book in question and then the bible as a whole as being out of context then ur right i take things out of context (read with the heavy saracasim i used). When I have made a claim I have backed it with several specific verses in order to make my claim. You may not realize it but in a lot of ways you are very similar to mormonism as that is the essence of what they have done. They have misinterpreted text to fit thier own ideas and bam you have mormonism.
I am aware that there have been historical investigations of the bible, but these will not buttress the claims of Christ's resurrection, performing ofexorcisms, or any other such miracle. These are strictly matters of faith until miracles become something other than miraculous.
yes but miracles are a mathematical capable of occurring so I still dont get ur claim? there are many things that have occurred that we cannot explain and cannot duplicate. You are correct we cannot recreate the water to wine and the healing but so what?

well usually when somebody asks a question it is nice and short (unless of course your a senator at the supreme court nomination hearing and they are long). How about we sum all 9 pages of argument up with this...If you believe in God, good for you.If you don't believe in God, good for you too.None of us can say with absolute certainty that they are correct, but we'll all find out someday, won't we?

Nope.Cause when you die, you'll just go black, and be gone. Unfortunately, you probably won't have a few seconds to gloat about being right. You'll be dead :)Unless I can be a ghost, which I've stated would be awesome. I hope that's the case. Ghosts rule and I'm totally haunting someone.

Suited up, there are scientfic facts throughout the Old Testament that few people know about. There are scriptures that say all nations are of one blood , which wasn't known as fact until I beleive the first world war- there are scriptures that talk of the morning stars singing, NASA has recordings of the stars making a melody of sorts, there are scriptures taht talk about the fertile properties in snow, there are scriptures that talk about evaporation and precipitation and the fact that the earth is round, alot of things that were not known at all but somehow people then knew it- it is one of the ways that I can prove that the bible is/was inspired by God, in that there is no way these people could have proven these things, yet they wrote them. Hi. They also were certain the Earth revolved aroudn the sun and thought stoning people to death who touched a goat on Sunday was a good idea.good luck.

To put it all in another light, it is +EV to believe in God according to Pascal. Never really thought about it in that way.
This EV equation (and the Pascal's Wager line of play that led to it) is incomplete, since the investment in the "pot" isnt taken into account, nor is the utility of that investment. For some the investment is an hour or two a week on Sunday morning and before bed, and the utility of that time is so low that if they lose the pot in the end (if there is no God), then indeed it was a +EV line of play even though there is no God.If, on the other hand, their life was spent wracked with guilt over "sins" that were nothing more than artificial methods of controlling their behavior and it turns out there is no God, then that line was -EV for them.
Or god could send atheists to heaven and theists to hell.Or god could send people who like anamaniacs to heaven and people who don't to hell.Seems just as likely to me :?

College test.........Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or>endothermic (absorbs heat)?>>> Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's>Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some>variant.>> One student, however, wrote the following:>> First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time.>So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the>rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that>once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are>leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the>different religions that exist in the world today. Most of these>religions state if you are not a member of their religion, you will go>to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since>people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all>souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect>the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at>the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that>in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the>volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.>> This gives two possibilities:>> 1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at>which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will>increase until all Hell breaks loose.>> 2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of>souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell>freezes over.>> So which is it?>> If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my>Freshman year that, "it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with>you" and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night,>then number 2 must be true. Further, I am sure Hell is exothermic and>has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell>has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and>is therefore, extinct...leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the>existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept>shouting "Oh my God.">>>> THIS STUDENT RECEIVED THE ONLY "A>

No, Matt, there is no eternal security, if I don't continue to live a christian life I go to hell. It's not a blanket that protects, it's a guide to a path- the steps on that past need to be followed to be christlike. If those steps are not followed.... see previous statement. This is ONE of the main problems that many people have with religion as it is now. Basically, inder the current incorrect conclusions drwan from God's word you can do whatever you want as long as you have accepted Christ in to your heart as your personal saviour. Which goes against so many scriptures it is just crazy. I have a proposition for you and anybody else for that matter #1 500$ directly to the account of your choosing if you can find the phrase " Accept Jesus Christ in your heart as your personal saviour " in the KJV of the bible, New Testament or Old. #2 500$ if you can find a scripture that says that you don't need to be baptized, any scripture where Jesus says, " Oh, and by the way, don't get baptized.," or anything along those lines. #3 500$ if you can find a scripture that mentions any other religion by name except christianity. #4 500$ if you can find a scripture that says it is O.K. to call yourself, as a christian, by any other name. #5 500$ if you can find any scripture where God demands anything else but absolute belief in him. This is an open challenge, any one of you is welcome to give it a shot. Matt, I don't like to talk about being a christian because at the time I do not act like one, I don't believe the path I am on is the one that God would choose for me. I am a christian, I just try to play it down, I don't like to flaunt my disobedience. Now, being a christian and baptized into the body of christ I run the risk of losing the Holy Spirit and my chance at eternal lfe in heaven. That is not a risk I neccesarily want to take but at this time, and there is so much to it, alot of it personal, at this time I need to figure out me a litle bit. Now, at the risk of sounding redundant, you do stand for something, but you couild be wrong, right? So, you stand for nothing. When it comes to God and the way to eternal life there are absolutes, and you don't seem to grasp that. I do, and without a doubt when it comes to biblical fact I am not wrong, and I will continue to come up with 500$ dollar challenges.

all religions = the same guilt but with different holidays.
Hey, good point! Or should i say "God" point! hahhahahhaaha. wait, that wasn't funny. I'll just repeat the thing that I say most about "God". I grew up a christian, and we were taught not to listen to people who denounced "God", because they were Satan's people, just like Satan the devil "Himself". so when I heard someone start to question "God", i literally got sick inside, and very, very frightened. that's a great element of brainwashing, the fact that you can't hear a contrary opinion. So, I repeat, i beg, beg, BEG, everyone who believes in "God" to read tons of scientific literature about possible origins of the universe. Read the extremely well-done research about "dating" bones and rocks, etc., which more than proves to me that we couldn't have been here only 4,000 years, or however many it's supposed to be, because it's impossible. 2. think about how all of the Native Americans had no idea who "He" was. had never heard of such an individual with the same head, hands, feet, and testicles as you and me, which is why they worshipped the "Sun" (as do I), as the most powerful omnipresent being around us, the giver of life, and food, and happiness, with no guilt. and 3. to repeat others fine, and comical, statements. No effin' dinosaurs on the boat!!! Now, do you deny dinosaurs existence, or is it just that they weren't around "His" people, because they kept themselves hidden, or were invisible. Again, my only point in saying this is to open your mind to ALL THE POSSIBILITIES, and then come to a conclusion. that's why i always like to talk about "God", because that's all I want, is for people to pursue every single avenue, like I was told to be afraid of doing and run from doing when i was a kid. And that's another reason I started this post, because not only does it sound stupid for DN to be saying that "God" has something to do with winning poker tournaments, but it also boggles my mind that he can have such an advanced brain, because he certainly does, and yet his whole life evidently he has never studied science diligently or thought to question "God", he just believed in his mother's word, exactly as I did, that this was absolute truth so there's no need to ever question it. THAT'S A REALLY POWERFUL THING TO DO TO A CHILD!!! IT WORKS REALLY WELL!!! Or take Kurt Vonnegut, on the other hand, whose parents were very anti-religion, and didn't think at all that there is a possibility of a "God" who plays dice with the world, demanding service from "His" creations, they thought it was ludicrous. So he, on the other hand, has spent his whole life writing comical pieces about how stupide religion is, such as his new church he invented in his book "The Sirens of Titan", which was called: The Church of God the Utterly Indifferent Their whole "Church" was to make sure people knew that "God" obvoiusly has no concern for anything you do, so go about your business.that's all I ask, just expand your mind, read about everything, such as buddhism encourages people to do, explore all avenues. if y0u still believe after doing this, fine, there's nothing I can do for you. But i snapped out of it, and it wasn't because I started worshipping the devil and slaughtering live humans and animals for Satan (as "God"'s people used to do). It was only because I started thinking rationally!

unfortunately there is more at stake than that, since the religeous extreme right is continually pushing anti-intillectual causes, and even those with passive belief in god are indirectly lending support to them.

I'm pretty sure that all of these scientific facts can be easily concluded without the use of any technology and most likely were known by cultures other than those who were exposed to the bible (with maybe the exception of the singing stars thing, which is most likely a metaphor anyway).
