tipping frenzy

Recommended Posts

I've heard that the top pros, namely the big game pros, don't tip much, but I think those accusations had to do with their tipping relative to the stakes they're playing. I'm pretty sure they tip at least as much as is common practice. When I first started playing poker, I was young, I didn't know tipping etiquette, and I never tipped. In retrospect, I really should have been tipping to avoid having dealers card me when I was underage. Fortunately, it never happened. If you're playing for a living and tipping the dealer every time you win a pot is going to have a significant effect on your hourly rate, I don't think you should feel obligated to tip.

From a strictly logical perspective of services offered, why should higher stakes players tip more?Isn't the act of dealing the same regardless of who you're actually dealing for?If anything, dealing to the pros should actually be easier. They all know what they're doing, pay attention, not as likely to be abusive, drunk, etc, and the dealer is pretty much getting advanced poker lessons at the table.

Not that Austin cares I'm sure. But as I sifted through this I noticed nobody mentioned the fact that having a douche table image is bad. If you are playing in a typical low limit game people will notice if you pull in any amount of pots with a lack of tipping and will treat and play against you differently. It's the same thing as being a TC. VERY -EVON another note a question to all the tippers.I order pizza from this local place, large pizza is 17 bucks delivered I always give the guy a 20 and leave it at that. They just implemented a 3 dollar delivery charge that goes straight to the driver. I still give them 20 (the new full price) Cheap or not?

Not. They obviously implemented that for the non-tippers. It's the same as a gratuity when you go out to eat, its a tip thats built into your bill.

That's my thinking but my buddy who drives for them thinks it's cheap. biased bastard. :club:

I think I heard that Doyle Brunson almost never tips the dealer. If you're playing for a living, maybe tip sparingly. If you're playing for fun, tip as much as you want.
You mean the same Doyle Brunson that walked around with a rack of 100 dollar chips at Christmas and gave them to the dealers?
i think daniel did that too.

Amusing thread. As a dealer I will definitely say that not tipping is seriously -EV.
How is it -EV? Please elaborate. Oh, wait, your opinion is severely biased. But still, tell me.

Allow me to elaborate.Tipping is -EV because in the long run it doesnt pay to be a cheap freaking douche. Satisfied with that explanation?

You're being cheap everytime you don't tip a sales clerk then.

no they work on commission. by buying something from them they will make money.I tip those who derive the majority of their income from tips---waiters, bellboys, cab drivers, poker dealers/casino dealers, etc.I do not advocate tipping anyone and everyone. but the fact is that poker dealers live on tips....therefore I tip. If a dealer is bad by all means dont tip. but if they are decent or better you should...nothing crazy....just a dollar a pot is more than sufficient.

I would LOVE IT if I made money everytime I sold something at Walgreens. But I dont.I also stated earlier that if the dealer is doing a fantastic job, he will get a tip.

well I realize that employees of walgreens and walmart in particular get the shaft. but it is not the norm to tip a sales clerk at walgreens. if it was I would I promise you that.It is the norm to tip poker dealers.I am just saying you shouldnt hold out tipping for "fantastic" dealer service.Maybe a dollar a pot for good service and 2 bucks a pot for fantastic service. You really should tip the dealer as long as he is good. No tipping should be reserved only for below average dealers

All right, after 4 pages, we've concluded that it's proper etiquette to tip the dealer a buck or two per pot. We've also concluded that if you don't tip, you are a cheap bastardd. Anyone tipping more than 2 bucks is a shill, drunk or simply sucking up to a cute dealer who will never sleep with you.Now... onto a more interesting question..Do you tip the maid at at hotel? If so, how much?I just started doing this a few years ago. Usually 2 bucks each night.I'm interested in hearing the opinion of any hispanic maids on this site.

Well I am not a hispanic maid. But I did grow up in Miami. So thats pretty close.i usually leave 5 bucks per night at the end of my stay unless they did a lousy job. If I stayed in a hotel more than 4 nights I would just cap it at 20 bucks though. thats enough I think.

I have been leaving $1 for the maid. I stay in Motels not Hotels. Usually the cheapest one I can find. They don't ever, and I mean ever, have a tip envelope. I just leave a naked dollar on the counter or table.

All of you are pretty much at adulthood or near adulthood. All of you probably will have kids at some time, others already do. Those kids at some point will work for tips in the service industry- these jobs generally pay better then alot of jobs out there. ( My waiter job. 40 hours. Avg 800 a week- a good week is 1,000. ) When those kids work these jobs, you will want people to tip your kids for what they do. So, start now. On a side note, if everybody tipped the way they should, I would easily take home 1,200 every week. Thats 800 a month more that becuase of cheap retarded a ss holes, I never see. That's alright, the percentages are on my favor.
So in other words, you're pissed off even though you're making quite a bit of money already.Good argument.
So in other words, your really just jealous. Thats O.K. I already knew that- I buy things from walgreens from time, it's not like they are hiring the cream of the crop.
LOL! Yes, I'm jealous that I'm not a waiter. Caught me. First of all I'm 18 and still in school, so no time for a full time job. When I graduate from ISU with my computer engineering degree, avg. starting salary directly out of college is 52k. I'll feel a much better sense of accomplishment doing something fun and something good for the future than asking "would you like ranch, french, or italian dressing with that salad, sir? Fries or potatoes? Rare, medium rare, or well done, sir? Oh, is it your son's birthday?! Let me go gather my crew and we will all go get these cute little hats and sing for you!"
I average 40,000 a year as a waiter, I have made 20,000 this year from poker. My wife, also a waitress, makes the same. We work only nights, usuallly from 4 till about ten, little longer on weekends. The nights when I go buckwild at the tables, I can play as long as I want- I hardly ever have to be at work in the morning. The other nights, we stay up as late as we want and party like rockstars. The bills are paid, I drive the cars that I want, I have a beautiful home and am an all around happy guy. First, you've gotta hope that your job isn't outsourced- chances are it will be. If you are lucky, you will find a position, making 52,000 dollars- 18,000 of which will go to taxes beacause you are single, and you will get raped. On top of that it is highly competetive- you will constantly be trying to one up the next guy, refresher courses, management seminars, learning other departments- not to make more money, just so that when the inevitable downsizing comes you just might have a job still. So, 10 hour days become 13 hour days, and you live with constant uncertainty, and never the time to relax and deal with it. Yeah, I envy you. Now, when you tighten the noose make sure to leave no slack- you want it to happen quick, no suffering.

A couple of years ago, I was in Vegas and played at the Palms 4/8 game and also the Circus 4/8 w/ half kill game. I smoke and the Circus game was easy as it gets. Both casino's took the rake by the .25. This means that they would break down a $1 chip into quarters during a pot. I saw many, many players tipping in .25 increments. I couldn't decide if this was -ev or +ev for the dealers. Some players would keep the change and give 1-3 dollar tokes. Some players would just give all the quarters no matter how many was in the pot. Some players would just give .50 every hand they won. I gave $1 toke for every hand won except very small pots and only $1 even if the pot was large. I started putting the quarters in the cup holder. Filled up two cup holders and then got a slot bucket and started filling that up. After about 16 hours I had just over $65 in quarters. I have no idea how much I acutally ended up tipping, or how much total rake was taken. I think you have to factor in tipping as well as rake when you do the math to see what you have to win to beat the game. The rake sucks but it's a fee we have to pay to play. Tipping is mandetory unless the dealer is super slow, makes mistakes or is totally rude.King Austin, you should tip.

You act like you know what you're talking about, but really you're just talking out of your ass.Computer engineering is such a broad category. I could do a number of different things. I could go into system and network security, or I could go into creating new hardware so everything is smaller, faster, and better. There isn't going to be any downsizing in any imaginable time to come since computers are the future.I might get raped by taxes, but almost everyone with a respectable job does.

Almost everyone who I work with has a degree in something- why do you think they wait tables? Because they can't find a job? N0- it's because if you can put up with the occasional a ss monkey you can make really good money, and still have a life. I don't give a s hit whether you or anyone else thinks my job is respectable or not- all I care about is that I have time to live, because life is to short to not have time for me and my family.

The play is terrible, but the rake is often $10 max even for 5/10 games and then tipping on top of it.
$10?? The most I've ever seen was in a low limit room in Florida and that was $5. Most rooms in Vegas rake a max of $3. The same can be said about the rooms in Mississippi. If a room is raking any more than that... don't go there. Until recently, casinos didn't like having poker rooms because there wasn't any money in them. Now they surround the rooms with craps tables, black jack, 3-card poker and video poker. Compared to what they get from these games, they still don't get anything from the poker rooms.
The B&M casinos as well as smaller charity casinos tend to have $10 max rake, sometimes along with 10% rake as well, which makes the game virtually unbeatable at 5/10. The larger casinos rake is still fairly high at $7 or $8 max fairly often at 10% of each pot. I'm not from Vegas, but I would imagine the rake is lower considering there are more people who play there in general. But, here in Toronto, the rake is pretty rediculous and makes it not worth my while unless there's a particularly juicy game going on.Yes, casinos don't make as much money off poker, because it takes up lots of space area wise while not neccessarily providing a ton of profit for the house when compared to a slot machine or craps table. Of course, this is the reason why people like myself play poker in the first place, because we have an edge and can beat the game whereas playing craps, the house has the edge over you.
the rake isnt that high anywhere i play jay. i play at the trop and the taj in AC and at a club in baltimore. the rake is actually about half of what u suggest it is.
