new to online - which site is best?

Recommended Posts

Hey all-As some of you may know from my posts, I have never played online. I do very well for myself in live limit games. And yes, Smash, I do keep records to prove to myself that I am not fooling myself into thinking I am a long term winner.Anyways, I think it's time to try online poker. I sit around for a few hours a night, and could be using that time to make some cash. I have done some research myself, but I truly value the opinion of the members of this forum. What site do you suggest? If you could give me some reasons why one is better than others it would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

I've played quite a few, my favorite used to be stars. My friend talked me into depositing into fulltilt, and i fell in love with it. There are plenty of fish, yet still good games. The opportunity to play with pros is a helluva lot of fun, just to say "hey, I busted Juanda out of a sit n go" or "I beat Howard Lederer for a $50 pot in 2/4 razz." Plus, the multitable tourneys don't hit obscene numbers like party and stars, where it's basically a lottery in the beginning. I love it.

I really like Partypoker. it's the biggest...don't have to worry about being paid when you win. with 60,ooo people playing, you have lots of opportunities for finding the fish. I have not played the other for comparison, because i am happy where i'm at.Just make sure you look at the big ones. pokerstars has very low limits down to .02/.04, where the lowest limits with party are .50/$1I'm going to check out the new one that daniel recommends partymountain, but have not heard much about it in herethere is an independent ranking website i found, but can't remember the site...maybe someone else will have it.good luck

It also really depends on what you plan on playing. If you want to play sit n gos, absolutely DO NOT play party. I prefer both the sitngos and the MTT on FullTilt to any other site i've played. I like having 200 people in a multitable that doesnt' have an insane buyin instead of 1700 for a $5 buyin

Just curious as to why you don't like sng's at party?...that's my bread and butter there.

Depends on 2 things: if you're playing to improve your game *and* make money or just doing it for the $, and what levels you play.Starting with 800 chips in a reasonably fast-paced blind structure is basically an allin fest. There's no real poker, it's just patience until you hit your tier 1 hands and get called. If you want to just play like that, then by all means go for it, but if you would like to actually get better, these shortstacked sitngos aren't it.

good points...i think it does effect me in mtt, as i tend to be patient and let the all-in fest people fight it out and i get my pots when i have the best of it. i have a little game i do with the sng's i play $5 win go to $10 win etc. if i place i stay at same level, but if i lose i go back to $5...I've been able to get up to $100 sng's on a quite a few occassions where the starting chips are a litte better at 1000. I'm going to at least split up my bankroll with maybe pokerstars and fulltilt (the commercials are hilarious)Take care

Ultimate Bet is a good site.Tighter than PP for the most part, but def. money to be made there. It's more about Table selection at UB. Every game at PP is crazy you can assume...UB has it's looser games and it's tighter ones...you just need to look around. They have table stats for % to flop and average pot size to help.I have played .25 - .50 up to 1 - 2 NL games there and have been an overall winner.Good tournies as well. SNG start with 1k in chips, blinds are 7 minutes. Not neccesarilly an all in fest. Much better than PP in those regaurds.Hope this helps? Lemme know if you would like me to refer you. Good luck.- Jordan

Without a doubt the best online Poker site on the net is far and away Pokerroom.com and I can give you several reasons why:1. First and foremost when they say your withdrawel will be credited to Neteller within 1 business day, they actually mean it. 2. If you're short on cash their mininum deposit is only $103. If you want to use the instacash feature and have the money show up instantly using neteller, Pokerroom covers the extra fee.4. Excellent player notes system and they have note indicators which even if your in the lobby just put the cursor over the indicator on someone at a table and you can see what note you have on that player without having to go into that room.5. A color codded system that you can assign your own categories too. Can also see this from the main lobby6. Excellent freerolls. If you make enuf points during the week the largest one is $6000 freeroll. If your playing there anyway you will get the points7. All $5 SNG and MTT fees have recently dropped to .50 cents8. They redid the look of their pokerrooms from a purple to a darker brown. The look is excellent in my opinion.9. The overall look of the software and the ease of navigation10. The $1 NL mtt tournament they offer every Saturday. Last week the first place prize was $1600 and no fee for this tournie. 1 dollar is all it takes.11. Flop percentage indicators on every room.12. Mininum .25/.50 for their ring games.13. Limit games as high as $50/$100 if that's your style14. The ability to creat your own private poker rooms where you can set the speed of play, public or private, NL or limit15. If you get tired of Holdem, they offer omaha and they have a small casino which features 10 cent slot machines, nickel poker machines, Blackjack, Paigow, Roulette, Crapps, and more.16. One of the most trusted poker sites on the net. Not the biggest and not the smallest. Been in operation since 1998.17. And last, but certainly not least. The best toll free customer support I have ever seen in my life and in 10 months of playing there I only needed them once which I think in itself speaks volumes on its own.

I despise Party Poker -- and as someone said, do NOT play there for the SNGs. They have a higher fee than other sites, fewer starting chips, faster blind structures... Aside from that, the interface just stinks. You have to go on-line to see the payout schedule, for example. PokerStars is much better. I haven't played FullTilt but I might give it a go...

Ultimate Bet has by far the best software. They also have the best No Limit cash game selection. STT are great on UB (structure is good) but MTT are not that plentiful(UB is not really for playing MTT).There are a lot of stout Party Poker supporters because of the vast amount of fish that play at that site. You will also find that Party Poker has cartoonish software that is slow and sluggish (compared to Ultimate Bet). Party Poker has the best selection for limit games. That said, there are a few other less established sites such as Pokerroom.com (maybe not less established but less people play there), Fulltilt.com (very new), and Pacific Poker (again, just not that many people play here because of bad software). Pokerstars has been around for a while and has the toughest competition but a good selection of No Limit and Limit cash games as well as STTs and MTTs.That said, I play NL cash games at Ultimate Bet.

How is that NOT an allin fest? Stars turbo tourneys start at 1500 with blinds every 5, and that's an allin fest, so i'd imagine that this would be pretty damn close to an allin fest as well.
