I think you're all overlooking the finest book in the history of the printed word, Poker Essays II by Mason Malmuth. His sentences sit up in style heaven just waiting to be pulled down.

Are there any other Harry Potter fans in here?? I dont care how much of a dork it makes me I love Harry Potter! I would love to have people to discuss them with. Who would ever want to read these books. Um er, I may have glanced at all of them at one time or another. Where you as disapointed as I about the third movie? I made the huge mistake of re-reading the book before going to the movie.
The third movie was visually stunning, though I still think Alfonso Cuaron's decision to shy away from the Marauder's story was wrong.

Greg Iles is fantastic....just loved Footprints of God. Have to check out some more of his stuff.I agree the 3rd movie was visually stunning. I agree that he should have included the Marauder's Map storyline as it is a big part of the rest of the books. I agree with the guy earlier who said the 3rd movie was disappointing....but I am always a little disappointed by them because a movie would have to be 4 hours long to do the 1st 3 books justice (and sadly, 10 hours long to do the next 3 books justice....lets just say I am not eagerly anticipating movie #4.What is never disappointing are the books themselves. 6th book was another fantastic effort although not my favorite. (I guess I would rank them:1. Book 52. Book 33. Book 64. Book 45. Book 16. Book 2Anyways, I am glad some people on here like these books....I believe they will end up being this generation's Lord of the Rings. Can't wait for book 7.....start writing JK.

I enjoyed the Da Vinci code a lot a$$. Angels and Demons was a much, much better book though.By the way, if you enjoy Dan Brown but wish he wasnt such a formulaic, bad, bad writer (if you notice, the surprise villain in each of his books has a similar theme) try Rule of Four.....its a book about Princeton kids (normally a bad thing) but it is quite good and has all the historical/religious stuff that makes Dan Brown so entertaining.

I read Catcher in the Rye for the first time a couple months ago and was disappointed. I probably would have liked it when I was younger and angrier at the world.East of Eden by Steinbeck is my favorite book.I recently read Naked by David Sedaris and enjoyed it.I also trudged through Story by Robert McKee. It's about the principles of screenwriting and is a fairly difficult read, but it's really eye-opening. I don't know how anybody could write a successful screenplay without first consulting this book. They'd have to have some serious talent for storytelling.

so i'm interested - i know that Catcher in the Rye has been hyped beyond belief and Salinger's disappearence adds pretension - plus the fact that Mark David Chapman didn't leave home without it sucks Why do you guys otherwise hate CatcherI love the language and Holden's desire for some dignity and purity in the worldIt also cracks me up that people want the book banned because of the profanity when Salinger's point of using the profanity was to show his disgust for it

I think it was probably one of the worst books I have ever read. I have never come across a more manipulative, formulaic writer. I really have no interest in reading his other books, as I've heard from very reliable sources that they are more of the same. While the religious theories presented in the Davinci Code were interesting, Dan Brown lifted all of the information out of a thesis book called "Holy Blood, Holy Grail". I think I would have been better served just reading that.

I'm looking forward to the GoF movie because of Mike Newell. I know they trimmed the SPEW storyline completely, which should help make it manageable.I would rank the books...365412I also really enjoy Neil Gaiman and I want to start reading Terry Pratchett also.

Why do you guys otherwise hate Catcher
I didn't hate it. There was nothing new for me in that book. The teenager filled with angst story has been told to death for me. It was a great book for its time, but it didn't teach me anything. There was no plot either. I kept waiting for something to happen, but it never did. Since I waited so long to read it, I heard a lot of hype about the book before I got to it. It was too built up in my mind. I was expecting something controversial and shocking...but instead it just seemed like a mopey rich kid with social issues.

The above sums up my reasons for disliking Catcher pretty well. Good book but really, really boring. Didn't hold my interest. I did not hate it though.

Hey I said myself he is formulaic. He is a bad writer. That is all there is to it. Angels and Demons is worth the read though. Fascinating subject material......much more so than da vinci code.I see your points but I, like 97% of people, enjoyed da vinci code even though i clearly see its flaws. Sorry.

Even though I'm an avid RJ fan, I'm going to have to disagree. LOTR far surpasses aWoT, and George RR Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' is better IMHO. If you are looking for a couple of good fantasy series, try Martin's, or Steven Erikson's 'Tales of the Malazan Empire' series. Canadian author, but I think they just started releasing them in the US. I always ordered them from Amazon.ca before that. Patrick

There are a lot of people who would say that the DUNE books are better than all of them. I like LOTR better but Dune is damn good stuff.

I can see that - but of course it isn't salingers fault that his book has been redone a million times - the last time was igby goes down

Ha, you know, I thought of Dune as I pressed submit. I would put the Dune series up there with LOTR. Jordan's aWot, and the other series I mentioned are good, but not on the same level as Tolkien or Herbert.I too would put LOTR above Dune, mainly because I wasn't as into the books once Paul was gone. The Fremen kick ass though. :-)Patrick
