cash vs. tourney.........differences

Recommended Posts

Ive been pretty succesful recently in tournaments and by blood I am truly a tournament player. Although I am 17 years old i have built a pretty nice bankroll but only from tournaments. I of course, am looking to becoming a much better poker player but I also need the money and cash games is where the big bucks can be made. I try playing at a cash game but i just cant do it. In my head, poker always seems like a tournament and i can't make the adjustment to thinking in a cash game. What are big differences in cash games and what can i do to become successful in cash games and create a mental distinction between tournaments and cash games.

Wish I could help you, but I'm in the same boat. I cash very regularly in small tourneys and well more than enough to stay above even in large tourneys. But in cash games, I do well just to break even. A lot of people will say that's because I'm a fish, and maybe I am, but I'm in the black so they can say what they want and I'll be happy.Be warned though, there are people here who'll say tourney's are all luck. I think that's ridiculous since it'd be impossible for guys to get lucky enough to consistently win over a large field of people. Or maybe it's true, but who cares as long as you're in the black?

You know too much.Stick to tournaments.Allthough, you're clearly to skilled for low limit cash games, you'd probably just kill Party 5/10.That's limit holdem, $5/$10. On Party.Party 5/10...

Is tight OR aggressive??? Just from every basic instructional book/video/advice you'll ever get, tight and aggressive is the best way to play generally, and with more skill you can open up your game. I doubt someone will be able to give you a truly useful answer, atleat not close to what you can find in a book, (goto that forum, poker books maybe)...If you're asking this question I guess you're going to play low limits, I dont mess around too much there but it seems as if abc poker should make you a decent winner. But if you want to play mid (15/30 and above, although matt matros and 21 outs feel that this game is a joke and crush it for a few g's a week) limits then you should really pick up some material and read and practice... ie. playOR.. even though you dislike smasharoo, u can check out his quest to turn 50bucks into 1k, although he is playing .05/.10 right now (do they even play serious). but he gives you his take on hands and you can learn

Aren't all 17 year olds better at tournaments. It seems like that is all they play.

Can't blame them though, better at cash games, but tournaments are more fun.

Play $1/2 limit at the indian casinos. That way you should be able to match that $7/hour you make at McDonalds

That's what I start thinking after grinding out some 5/10 NL for a while, so I sign up for the super on party of some other weekend tourney and it's like 3-4.5 hours just to make the money.... fun yeah when i cash well, but pretty damn crappy when all it takes is one aj to crack your kk ( i admit sometimes i take the flips also with an ak or aq), but that leaves me frustrated as hell.Maybe you mean live tournaments or something, b/c I've tried doing that Gank thing of like 20 tournies a day and it didn't make it anymore fun, so until then I prefer to quit when I feel like it in a ring game....can you tell me why multi are so fun to renew my interest?

first, in cash games you have to tighten up, blinds arent rising, you have all day to accumulate chips, your stack isnt important in relation to the the others at the table (so long as you have a comfortable amount in front of you). You dont need to win races, dont go all in (Im assuming you play NL ring games, otherwise comparing NL tourney with limit ring is just a waste of time) with hands like 66 or AK preflop, its not a tournament, no need to put it all to risk, the blinds arent coming up behind you and there arent 10 other tables also moving.Cash games, you dont have to steal blinds or defend blinds or complete SB just because you need chips or cant get run over, make sure you like your hand, no reason to bluff with nothing, the "real value" of those chips is something to have to give up if they come over the top, the tourney value of chips when your stack is large and you may win a pot is different.Realize, you have to get lucky in tourneys a few times, in cash games you just dont have to get in positions where you need to get lucky.

So smash, I am a good Nl cash game player who has had success playing small limits (2-4 / 3-6) and I want to make the jump to some higher limits. Why would you suggest the 5-10 on pp? (I think I can kill that game, but I want to hear why from you)

Go out there and play play play intill you find a style that you win. You just cant have someone tell you what a winning style is. In a full game tight aggressive is probably best and in a short handed game you have to play more hands and still be aggressive. those are some basics
